This man is a true legend! One of the last independent drivers who could do it all on his own cars. As a 16 year old me and my buddy had a chance to meet him and get his autograph numerous times..but one of the best memories was talking with Dave on a Friday in between qualifying..we found him sitting at his hauler eating a baloney sandwich and a coke soda. He finished 4th that year at Riverside International Raceway January 1975.. in his bad ass Dodge. He was absolutely a gentleman and made us young teenagers feel very special. Just a down to earth guy. I'll never forget how he treated us especially since we weren't even allowed in the pits..but back then it was quite easy to sneak in.
Mr. Dave Marcis is a true Hall of Famer in my eyes. All he needs to go fast is some wingtip shoes and that iconic Good Year hat. He sure gets around so well for a young 82 year old man most people quite climbing ladders way before his age. What a terrific video you guys! 🏁Brian
When I hear the words "Realtree Chevrolet..." I immediately think of the 71 car that Marcis had in the early 2000s. This is a class act that needs a Hall of Fame spot.
There needs to be more stories about people like Dave, no matter what they kept on doing what they loved to do - race cars. The younger generation has no idea the kind of drive and determination it took in those days just to be able to get to the track never mind work on the car and win. They only had their expertise learned by trial and error, you can't go to school and learn that. Keep these kind on interviews happening before all these legends are truly gone.
Dave Marcis was a good friend of Dale Earnhardt's and Richard Childress and he would often test for Dale and even get in some cars before Dale even hit the racetrack in them, he even tested the winning Daytona 500 car for RCR. In exchange they would give him parts and sometimes even a car to race. Dave even had Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet as a sponsor for a race. Dave Marcis also got Kerry Earnhardt to make his Cup debut so Dale would be able to race his sons in Michigan. Dave is 82 but he knows more about race cars than anybody.
He got more out of a little than any driver i ever knew. He'd show up at the races sometimes and had to ask for volunteer crew and still would manage a top 10. I grew up in Hendersonville, NC and remember going to his shop to say hello and my father who built his drive shafts at IMS Asheville would re supply him and we would all get a cheeseburger cross the street. Always spent time to talk with me. A living legend who will always be remembered as a tireless worker who was a perfectionist, he had to be just to keep up and pay for the racing. Great man indeed!
A sad reality I agree with you on... Taking advantage of the present is the closest thing we have to a time machine. That is why we prioritize the older legends

Thank You for putting the spotlight on a true legend. I’m from Wisconsin and growing up in the late 60’s, and early 70’s he was always in the conversation around the local tracks as to how he was doing down South.Mr Marcis was a throwback who raced for the purse to pay the bills, not like most corporate racers today. Great video!!!
Good stuff again, Mitchell. Dave tested Big E's cars more than Dale did. He really trusted and loved Dave. You know we love Dave and Helen very much. Dang, he doesn't ever age, does he. What a great Ambassador for the sport. And YES, I think Dave should get back in a car. Tim's been trying to get Dave and Red Farmer on any track. I hope it happens. Excellent show with Uncle Dave.
Dave could confirm this, but according to my memory, there was a factory nearby (Custom Packaging) that Dave approached for help with storing a car that they were testing for Dale. Also, I believe the plant manager who was in my family let them use space in the back of the plant to do promo photos for the Olive Garden car. I still have the promo card that Dave gave my family as a thank you.
There was a tire shop in Asheville that Dave use to get tires from through Goodyear. The owner was a family friend that my dad would do mechanic work for. One day in the early 2000’s Dave came through there while I was there and gave the owner pallets of Gatorade. Dave and the owner were good hunting buddies, and would regularly go back to Wisconsin on hunting trips. I got to talking to Dave and the owner (I was maybe 12) and they took me rabbit hunting in Asheville. Fast forward to 2021 and I was at a bojangles at 630 AM to get breakfast in Asheville before work, and I had seen Dave eating by himself. I stop and said something, and he remembered me. Out of all the old racers I’ve come to meet, he was always to most humble.
I used to pass by Dave's old shop several times a week back in the 70s and early 80s was always amazed by what he accomplished out of the building he's one of the smartest guys racing thanks for all the wonderful videos 😊😊😊
I could listen to Dave Marcus for hours talk about nascar back when it was bad ass to watch. It’s pretty cool he took the time to show how he got started in racing.
My grandfather was the biggest fan of Dave's and had a clock in his RV of his car. My dad had a boss he worked with at M&M Mars who worked part time of Dave's crew. I remember being at Dover in 1987 and meeting up with Dave at this hotel with my dad and his boss and have a picture still to this day of me with Dave when I was 7 sitting with him and hanging out at the hotel with everyone.
It makes my day when a video drops and I can run it in the background while I'm working. Dave looks like he could still work circles around anyone. I miss those wingtip shoes on Sundays. Now we just have corporate AI generated spokespeople.
Mitchell - this is a great video! I never knew that the building on Brevard road have been Mr. Marcis' shop. I am an automotive historian in Asheville and work at the Estes-Winn Car Museum here in Asheville. There is some incredible NASCAR history here I would love to share with you guys next time you are here. I also lead history tours of Asheville in a 1923 Ford Model T that was build by Larry Ingram. All best to you and Logan - keep up the great work!
Dave is on hell of a guy, down to earth as you can be and proud to call him a good friend. Thanks Mitich and Logan. Pray for Dave and Helen. Thanks Ed Berry
WOW MITCHELL!!! You hit a another home run! Dave is a legend. He has so much knowledge because of his background working on all his own stuff all these years. I think its a Wisconsin thing, with the work ethic and the drive to race as much as he did. You have only scratched the surface on Dave and really his Wisconsin connection. I grew up and lived only a mile from the Marcis farm north of Wausau, and know many family members, crew, and fellow competitors from the golden age of stock car racing here. I will be sharing the link with my friends and look forward to more content. Keep up the great work both of you!!!😊
I must say this: Why is he not in the hall of fame? Look at the stats. But more importantly, people like him helped build the sport. He is a role model.
@@Stapleton42 Dave was the first one I remember from Wisconsin to compete at the cup level. Followed by Dick Trickle and many others including two Champions, Alan Kulwicki and Matt Kenseth. Dave truly was a pioneer.
Dave Marcis is the salt of the earth, honest, hard working and tough. Ive followed his carrear since the early '70's but have never been in the right place at the right time to have met him in person. Great video , appreciate you making it.
One of a kind that man is. Hard working and full of stories I bet. I was hoping y'all would talk about the taxidermy. Figured he may have gotten to hunt with Richard a time or two through real tree. Loved the part where he had seniority over the traffic light. 😅
Being in the UK I know relatively nothing about Nascar. But these videos you're making are simply fantastic. I'm learning loads and love all the comparisons of all the old workshops.
Out of all the Greats of Nascar past, Mr Marcis is by far at the top. Longevity and nobody really had much negative to say about him, goes a long way in my book.
I'm from Mt. Olive NC, and 73 years old. I still watch NASCAR, enjoyed many races watching Dave Marcis . The independents used to put on a good show fighting to gain a few spots in the middle of the pack and he was one of my favorites. In 1998 or 99 l was planning on going to Daytona the following year and I had a Marcis flag made from a lady who used to work for a company in Albermale NC who had moved to Mt. Olive. I got her to make one of him sitting in his car. I had her to embroider a pair of WINGTIPS next to the bottom of the drivers seat and he was sitting in the # 71 car. Unfortunately l had health problems and haven't been able to get back to a NASCAR race since then, but l still have his flag. Kept it in storage and it still looks like new. Always admired Dave and J D McDuffie from Sanford,NC. Wish I could have gotten to Daytona back then so l could have shown my flag off. It is a one of a kind. Since then I haven't been able to go back to a NASCAR race but I did enjoy them. Nothing and I mean absolutely nothing like being in person sitting on Chicken Bone Row when those drivers fire up and come flying by you. I still remember the smell of the burning rubber and the noise from the engines. Sweet music ❤
I’m 28 and I love this! I’m as much a racing fan and nostalgic as you! I tend to share your videos with some friends and an older coworker who used to be a Formula Ford driver and like all this cool history! Love it, keep it up!!!
Dave Marcis is a true racer and a good example of never give up doing what you love. He worked just as hard as the top names in the sport while being an independent team owner/driver. One of my favorite underdogs and it was pretty cool to see him lead a lap in the 2000 Winston 500 at Talladega. He put the #71 Chevy out front early in the race under green. Great tour around his race shops. Excellent video Stapleton42. 👍
Thanks for another great video with one of NASCAR's good guys. I'm 73 and attended my 1st race, the Atlanta 500, in 1963. It was won by my favorite driver, Fred Lorenzen. Later my favorites were David Pearson, then Dale, Sr. After them I haven't really had a favorite. I can't get enthused about today's NASCAR racing or any of it's current drivers.
This is, without a doubt, the absolute best video you've done. I have so much respect for Dave Marcis and all of the independent owner/ driver's. Thank you for this
I would have loved to be there at Ben Barnes. That man has tons of good stories. He and Dave probably shared many with you. Anytime we would pick up a engine from him we always got a couple great stories and a great engine.
I am 68 he was always one of my favorites even my g0-cart was # 71. As I said last time this Dave is super sharp for his age. Really enjoy you guys work of a lost era. Man he worked his rear end off.
It's crazy, Dave looks the same he did 30-40 years ago! I just got home from work and not far into this and can't wait for the whole deal! The man's a living legend! Thanks for what you all put out!
Another amazing video! I'm glad to see Dave Marcis is doing well. The Nascar Hall of Fame needs to have an exhibit honoring the efforts of the "independents". Thank you @Stapleton42 for sharing these excellent examples of Nascar history!
Freaking awesome !!!!!!! But you know whats sad, we will never see anything like this ever again in NASCAR. An independant racer , racing for the love of the sport. And doing it with his own two hands.
I am 61 and LOVE your history lessons. I am from a road racing and short track background. My Dads toy in the 80's was a street legal can am car that is now vintage raced. It was a nice car and still is. I got some pics off of the internet and it is still really nice.
Absolutely priceless. I tuned into nascar in 1995. I was a CART fan. I followed these small teams religiously. The money teams were suppose to win (their stories bored the hell out of me) so It was way more enjoyable to root for and watch teams like Dave's have a good day here and there. Thanks a ton for this.
Thank god you are keeping these memories and people from Nascar etc... alive for the future. Documentary of historical times of racing is important. True Americans
Mr. Marcis got the most out of what he had. Truly a remarkable person and I can only hope to be as spry and sharp as he is when I reach his age. Thanks for shooting this video, such history and you even uncovered those awesome IROC wheels and that distributor! And to think that Dave is only 22 years removed from his last Daytona 500 in 2002, plus the fact that his career spanned over five decades. Wow!
Dave is just freaking awesome!! I'm so bummed out that he never got the funding he needed. With his work ethic and wisdom he would of been unstoppable if he only had the cash😢
23:55 "We have done so much, with so little, for so long, that we can now do anything with nothing." Best quote ever. Cool shop tour(s). Fave items were the hand-painted battery charger and Martinsville grandfather clock. Keep up the good work and never mind the haters.
59 years old and watching on UA-cam daily (NASCAR/podcasts/your channel)Your content geared to older crowd that remember the past days of NASCAR/NHRA/AHRA etc. Thanks for your efforts;very cool you are getting these videos before the folks are gone forever.Great to see these time capsule shops etc.
55 here.... and I'm a UA-cam-aholic :) Another great video on a real legend. Sure there was Petty, Yarborough, Allison, Pearson etc. always up front and winning as a kid growing up a race fan. But we still always knew about Dave and the others like Jimmy Means & JD McDuffie. It's beyond cool to see and hear their stories from them when you have the opportunity to bring then to us. Thank you for all you are doing!!
That was great. Dave is as cool as people come. He has a treasure trove of cool stuff there too. The tire store was cool to see. I checked Historic Aerials (1900 Brevard Rd, Arden NC), there is a 1984 shot but no trailer shows. Interestingly Brevard Rd was not a through road, all the traffic would have turned by the gas station back then. I saw a video of Bobby Allisons place, some guys talked to his daughter and show the house and a little of the shop and I could not help but think how much better a Mitch and Logan video would be!
Wow! Another episode of my Goodyear backin', Wingtip wearin', Never give up without a fightin' Hero... Dave Marcus! I don't know why I didn't get a notification from UA-cam but I'm going to enjoy this regardless if it is a day late. Thank you guys @Stapleton42 ❤You ALWAYS Hit it out of the park! Have a wonderful day and GOD BLESS 🙏❤️✌️
When money puts these kind of men out of the racing world, the world of racing wont realize it made the mistake , untill the last checkerd is waved, Dave and racers like him are so missed by fans that truley understands what he was able to do, and a great driver , watch his time on Dale jr podcast about sandwiches on the airplane to Australia or Japan , so much of a great throwback.
I’m 50 and grew up around an Uncle that was NASCAR crazy. I didn’t really start watching until the late 80’s. The last few years I’ve kinda became disenfranchised with the whole thing, although I like hearing when Chase Elliott does well haha. Anyway, I love your videos, my first one was when you went and looked at Dale’s old motor home. That old guy that had it was something else lol.
That’s awesome
All best to you and Logan - keep up the great work!
thanks man! that sounds awesome
Dave is on hell of a guy, down to earth as you can be and proud to call him a good friend. Thanks Mitich and Logan. Pray for Dave and Helen. Thanks Ed Berry
Thank you Ed!
Ole Dave is sharp as a tack.
I live about 100 miles south of him in sc.
Hope I meet him.
Great person.
Keep up the great work both of you!!!😊
That is awesome thank you very much!
I’m 51 and I loved nascar back then don’t watch it now but I’m on UA-cam a lot I’ve watched all your videos good job
I must say this: Why is he not in the hall of fame? Look at the stats. But more importantly, people like him helped build the sport. He is a role model.
Pioneer for sure
@@Stapleton42 Dave was the first one I remember from Wisconsin to compete at the cup level. Followed by Dick Trickle and many others including two Champions, Alan Kulwicki and Matt Kenseth. Dave truly was a pioneer.
Having him in the HoF would diminish it. Numbers should matter.
Why hasn’t the hall of fame hasn’t put him in there yet I remember him always being at the races for years and now he’s done
How many drivers could turn their own wrenches and built their own cars? Dave is an icon.
Many back in the day. Few these days and maybe none born past the mid 90s that I know of.. for now
and win a Nascar event in a car he built himself.
Dave Marcis is the salt of the earth, honest, hard working and tough. Ive followed his carrear since the early '70's but have never been in the right place at the right time to have met him in person. Great video , appreciate you making it.
Thank you for being here for it!
Dave Marcus was really the epidomy of owner /Driver.
One of my favorite drivers. Outstanding content!!!!
One of a kind that man is. Hard working and full of stories I bet. I was hoping y'all would talk about the taxidermy. Figured he may have gotten to hunt with Richard a time or two through real tree. Loved the part where he had seniority over the traffic light. 😅
How do you thank someone who spent their life to just trying make ends meet, for showing you/us their life’s (racing) passion! THANK YOU MR. MARCIS
This is probably my favorite tours you have done Dave Marcis is such a good and hard working guy!
So awesome Dave Marcus is the man. I’m 49 years old. I love your videos. Keep it up. Thank you.
With all that stuff still in that shop,I would never want to leave,I'd be In heaven!! Thank you again for these
Being in the UK I know relatively nothing about Nascar. But these videos you're making are simply fantastic. I'm learning loads and love all the comparisons of all the old workshops.
He is so down to earth. Just a real nice guy! Love these videos of him.
Dave is a real race car driver.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Marcus at a NASCAR event several years back. A truly amazing guy to talk to.
Thank you. Dave has always been my hero.Looked alot like my favorite uncle.
Thank you for this
What a great guy, he could give us all a lesson on how to get by on a little and be thankful for what you have.
I agree completely
Freaking awesome !!!!!!! But you know whats sad, we will never see anything like this ever again in NASCAR. An independant racer , racing for the love of the sport. And doing it with his own two hands.
You are doing the racing world a service we can never say thank you enough for. Keep doing what you are doing. Thanks bud!
I am 61 and LOVE your history lessons. I am from a road racing and short track background. My Dads toy in the 80's was a street legal can am car that is now vintage raced. It was a nice car and still is. I got some pics off of the internet and it is still really nice.
That is awesome!
WOW, I could watch Dave Marcis for hours..... He is a Racer!
Another awesome vid guys! Always liked Dave, bis wing rips and his Goodyear hat! Thanks for keeping the history alive!
Wow!
Right! It is crazy
Dave is just freaking awesome!! I'm so bummed out that he never got the funding he needed. With his work ethic and wisdom he would of been unstoppable if he only had the cash😢
I agree
23:55 "We have done so much, with so little, for so long, that we can now do anything with nothing." Best quote ever. Cool shop tour(s). Fave items were the hand-painted battery charger and Martinsville grandfather clock. Keep up the good work and never mind the haters.
thanks man!
One of the best back yard craftsman in motor sports. Could take junk and make it fast. Your looking good Dave.
Just exactly like the old short track guy's that I grew up with. What a gentleman and a treasure.
I appreciate that!
55 here.... and I'm a UA-cam-aholic :) Another great video on a real legend.
Great video! I remember watching Dave race. They don't make them like Dave anymore. 1 man band. Awesome!!!! Thanks for the video.
56 yr old here and enjoy everything you guys do. thanks
I love this classic NASCAR history.
Dave is one of the greats and this is as charming and fascinating as Harry Gant’s walkaround. Thanks for this little piece of treasure.
Glad you enjoyed it!
oh boy, been waiting for another one of these.
Today is your lucky day then! Glad you're here man
Thank you for the hard work and toil I know goes into these videos and keeping the history alive. My absolute favorite to watch.
Thanks man we appreciate you
When money puts these kind of men out of the racing world, the world of racing wont realize it made the mistake , untill the last checkerd is waved, Dave and racers like him are so missed by fans that truley understands what he was able to do, and a great driver , watch his time on Dale jr podcast about sandwiches on the airplane to Australia or Japan , so much of a great throwback.
Dave is the best, I would love to meet him. I have always admired all of the independent guys, they are awesome.
You made the right decision on it, you and Logan seem like really good, level-headed folks. It gives me hope for this world. Thank you!
I hunted with Dave at a Celebrity Pheasant Hunt in South Dakota about 15 years ago...he is such a cool, nice guy with so many stories!
By listening to the guy and how hard he had to work at it, you can rest assure that racing is one hell of an addiction.
Oh man, this is awesome! Thanks so much for tracking down Dave and talking to him. I appreciate all the awesome history your channel brings back!
