inclusive - listen to all, gain consensus and then act- An extremely slow and ineffective decision making process that been the hallmark of our decision making process for all these years. No, that's not how decisive leaders work

I have great respect for Sri. Arun Shourie, whatever he said about is known to most of us and Atalji is Atalji, none can match him, having said this I must say that the today's situation is different and today we require a different leader. Power hungry people will swallow the soft people like Atalji, indirectly he was talking about Modiji, anyone can read between. He must not have used this forum to spit venom on the present despensation, Modiji has his own style and he too is elected by the people. Yes he has his own drawbacks. Please look at the larger interest and not to settle political scores.

shivanand deshpande That isn't true. At the height of coalition politics there were a great number of people and upcoming leaders who wanted power, as you termed were "power hungry". To balance them and interests of the multiple parties he carried in his 1999 coalition government is the same as balancing the power balance of today. Infact Atalji didn't even have a majority in the parliament, yet he was able to take all members through. It has nothing to do with circumstances it's the kind of a person you are and what values you place your faith in.
Infact in one interview done in 2001 (not sure of the date, but during his tenure), he was asked what he felt about the criticism that he wasn't "ruthless enough", Atalji said "why be ruthless?" Taking bold decisions and ensuring work is done doesn't require you to be a ruthless and fearing personality. And so it was, he took many bold decisions carried out multiple reforms but there was never a need to dictate, his softness and kind hearted-ness wasn't a weakness or something he allowed to be exploited. He wasn't and isn't someone who could be "swallowed"!
He was the last of them, the ethical and decent politicians.

If you get a Ministership support everything that govt does.. If you are not a minister criticize every action of that govt....A standing sample .

There is no point in comparing Atalji and Modiji .You must know that Vajpayee headed a shaky coalition NDA government .Had BJP had absolute majority , he too would have scrapped Article 370 ,abolished Triple Talaq .The dividers who say Vajpayee was inclusive and Modi a dictator is farce.

Highly probable. Remember he didn't sack Modiji after the pogrom in 2002 in Gujarat. He even said a few words on the other community which was a subject of debate.

Neither repeal of Art 370 nor triple talaq are communal. Although I agree he did not kick out modi in 2002 which he should have done.

You cannot compare Atalji and Modiji. They're different personalities. They have their own limitations. Vajpayee could never be shrewd and take dangerous political decisions. Modiji has got the guts, he gets things done but he pays the price by being misunderstood as a dictator. Modi has ushered in new era of accountability. He has ensured that people will not vote for politicians who rule the country merely because they come from a certain family.
All this fuss is because Modiji doesn't back down and concede to these stooges. He knows that backing out means permanent ouster from politics. Modji has been harassed all his life. He's grown thick skin and necessary political acumen because of it.

So, you think that going ahead with nuclear tests, knowing full well the sanctions that would follow, was not a daring move? Or that starting negotiations that would ultimately result in removal of all technology transfer sanctions against India did not require political acumen / cunning?
Are you seriously saying that ill-thought out policies, like demonetization, required guts? Do you prefer a PM who goes on world stage and says India has beaten the virus, India is the pharmacy of the world - and then 2 months later has to ask the world for medicines?
In your mind, what is the difference between dramatic and daring?
