My first race (at knoxville) (dumb)
Didn't even have a trailer... pushed it with a pickup 8 blocks..
Parked behind a huge rig with one pulling in behind..
Sammy walked by and said.."I think you forgot your trailer "
I said.. didnt think we was racing those tonight.. he gave me a smile and said good enough...

Too Tall is one of those little guys that racing depends on car counts. This young man is such a hard worker. He is a good solid driver. Doing really well in the Silver Crown too. Very impressive in his 1st year. God bless this man for following his passion.

Great story on Trey. "I just love to race" pretty much says it all. Most people that haven't raced before just don't get that.

Sounds like what Sprintcar Racing in Australia used to be like for all competitors.
I'm thinking of a time, up until the appearance on the Australian Sprintcar scene of the "Team/Car Owner" which for us is a VERY RECENT (post 2000) development. Years ago, the blokes who drove the Cars, owned the Car's.

I think there is an impression from old timers that “kids” lack work ethic so it’s nice to hear about Trey. Also as a tall person I appreciate his willingness to adapt to a sport set up for jockeys.

This young man has a desire and does it by himself. I admire this and he will hopefully get the attention of a larger team needing a solid driver. The History Mystery Man has also done a couple of UA-cam shows featuring him. He turns the wrenches, drives the pick up truck, Amazing

I went looking for midget tires to use on my D2 midget after the four crown. Racing as a 1 man show is definitely hard work and keeps you on the move to just to spend a few minutes a week in the seat.

This is why big payouts and big shows need to go back not just to the top 3 or 5. Getting guys like this some more cash to make the features is a must. If just want to watch the top 10 drivers and support them dirt racing will diminish.

  • @Neil-f8h

I think an emphasis on open trailers should be further examined, when I raced sprints in the early 90”s and was in tow to the track, whenever we stopped for fuel or food, without exception people would come up to us and ask what it was on the back of the trailer. I took the time to engage and educate, many followed us to the tracks, it was great advertising for our sport..

I used to dog on the backmarkers when I was younger... I excelled at running my mouth...
Eventually I grew up. I realized I don't have a dog in the hunt... and should really just STFU about ANYBODY that that straps in and pulls out of the track... in any car, on any track... I've never put my money where my mouth was. I'd never built (i did help build stock cars for a friend for 5 years much later on) or bought a race car, so I never even managed to accomplish what I have been calling bad race car drivers, had already accomplished...
They do the best they can with what they have. Whether they are limited by money, knowledge, or skill... they're still out there doing their best, to fill out a field, and put on a show. Especially with sprint car racing... it would be pretty fucking boring to see 4-5 cars in an A main... since only a handful truly have a chance to win even remotely consistently... the real race doesn't start at the green flag, it starts when the leader enters lapped traffic...
So mad respect to this kid... pulling off what this 57 year old keyboard warrior here never did manage. Kudos.

Watch the daily post almost every day when I get home from work. Your first story on Trey Osborne compelled me to comment. Have been going to dirt tracks in Southeast Nebraska since 1969, Trey's story takes me back to a simpler time. Now, in my sixties and have the means to do so, I travel the country two to three times a year to watch Outlaws, High Limit, and Lucas Oil Late models. This story reminded me of those early times when money was tight and you scraped together enough to be entertained just because you enjoyed it so much. Thank you.

I joined a late model team decades ago it had issues with being able to afford all the equipment needed to be a top competitor. We bought used tires. We had one set of tires that were so good in qualifying that we definitely could qualify in the top 10 for the feature and that’s all we use them for a couple laps. Because we had a stellar reputation with respect to the honesty and character of all involved in this endeavor and race car, we picked up a fabulous sponsor and went from little to big in a short period of time. The new trailer had a car in the bottom and a car in the top and one in the shop and one ready to be built, spare engines and everything else you can imagine. Stay with it it’ll work out.

Back in the 80's and 90s we used to get tires from track after Woo race's sometimes 30 - 40 tires a weekend. Funny thing is we had the money to buy new ones every race night . Had a guy who was truly low budget he raced with a Holly 4 barrel couldn't afford Sprint car injectors but he raced and had fun we would give him the used tires and he race hole year on them. That's know different from Paul Silva getting the titanium Wing brackets out of the garbage can the trash pile.

ah mr too tall trey osborn, hes devoted, yes still very young but pretty good, I am sure he will make a go of it as he gets better with the hard work put in, but the life of a racer is a bit like a gypsy, its a life on the road grining night to night, 4 crows was pretty fun though it was hard to top last year with the tripple crown and finnal race points battle for the allstar circut of champions comming down to that final race with two of my favorite drivers, I thought we might see another tripple crown this year but just wasn't to be, and sevey didn't win any eaither but still podiumed more then once, the guy is consistante for sure.

I race 305 racesavor sprints in Ohio. I haven’t had to purchase a left rear or front tire since owning the car. I go to the big shows and will get left rears and get 2 to 4 nights on the good ones. I have also found rod ends that were on a slightly bent arm and used the ends. Every little bit that I can save helps me to be able to race more and I can buy other parts as needed.

Yes he is skinny but how does he fit in a Sprinter?? Let alone a midget. I am 6'1 and med/ large build and I simply do not fit. Tallboy chassis maybe but even then very squeezy.
My 1968 Supermodified is a limo in comparison. Though has a halo because the cage is too short and has had for 50 years! So nothing is new.
