Cody, I’ve been watching your videos for years and I just wanted to say you’re a very likable guy and you talk about subjects that REALLY matter! So thank you so much! I’ve applied just about every tip and/or technique I’ve learned from Sounds Like A Drum. I started playing when I was 9 years old which was 50 years ago, and picked up some pretty bad habits over the decades. So again, thank you for all you do! 🤘🏻
I’ll be sure to share this with him. We both put quite a bit of effort into the concept, execution, and edit of these videos. We’re so glad to hear that you’ve found value in them. Cheers! -Ben
As always chaps, another excellent video. Thank you for all the help you have given the drum community. 🥁❤️🥁
I have an old Sonor floor Tom with straight legs. Produces a pretty flat sound, hardly any resonance. When I fit elbowed legs, plenty of resonance and sustain.
Well, after watching one of your videos a few years ago, I put cotton balls in my floor tom and left them there for years. It worked nicely, although I had to set the drum more level than had been my habit (I like to angle it toward me a little), or else the cotton balls all went to one side. I like to use an Onyx head on my floor tom. They give me just the amount of sustain that I like, with enough punchiness cut through.
As always, thank you, Ben and Cody! I'm going to be changing those Onyx heads before too long, and these hacks will really help! I love this channel!
Dialing floor tom sound be like:
Do you like how it sounds?
No?
Alright keep tweaking it
In fact, this is a general approach for tuning any drum! In this episode we offer some specific tactics for handling one of the most common issues that arises with floor toms.
I like this channel. It makes me want to play my drums more.
To piggyback on the sandbag idea: you can also use a full stick bag! both leaning it on a leg or hanging it from the drum both change the length of the sustain in their own way. I often don't muffle at gigs because of this as I always hang a stick bag from my floor tom.
I would have never have known this. BRILLIANT knowledge, thank you 👌🏼
This one of my favorite segments to date. Been wrestling with an 18" floor Tom that sounds great but rings like church bell 🔔. I'm picking up some sandbags this weekend!
Thanks for demonstrating these quick-to apply ideas!
Top Tier Content as always.
you always go step further!
great video!
*and it's great that you're growing your hair again Cody! 🤗
Very interesting use of sand bags. Please consider an episode with that same WTS drum about changing the reso head between thin, medium and thick 2 ply heads to showcase the same tension on different thickness reso head will produce a different tone and sustain.
Awesome video guys!
To save carrying a sandbag - I think you can get a similar effect by leaning your stick bag against the leg.
Great tips
Fantastic. There's a lesson here.
Appreciate @sounds like a drum
Good tips! Thanks for the videos
All with no drum key? Say less! Great stuff as per usual thanks!
I have Evans G1 coated on all my toms. 10" and 12" mounted on cymbal stands with Fast Clamps, 14" and 16" floor toms. Got some new Evens EC 2 clear for all of them. Haven't put them on yet. Could you point me to one of your vids on tuning for the new ones. The G1 Reso's that I have now, I plan on keeping. They seem more than fine. Whatever you bring to us each time, I get taught more and more, so thank you so much!
could you make a video on how to get a high pitched snare drum sound please? (great video by the way)
Could you do an episode about if your happy with the toms individually, and even might sound okay intervally, but when hit together they sound weird, and dissonant, and arent ringing nice together? I recently had a session where I wanted them tuned very low for example, and though I was happy with each individually, and even going from one to the other say in a fill, I was really struggling on where to go tuning wise so theyd sound good when hit together without changing the sound of one or the other too much if that makes sense.
I’m pretty sure I got the cotton ball idea from you guys.. did I not? lol
We’ve demonstrated it before so that’s entirely possible!
Ben y Greb?
I watched this again, you pretty much already answered a lot on my question. But any other thoughts please share.
My favorite part of tuning floor toms is it requires no tools besides your fingers. 😂
That’s certainly the case with these WTS drums- and not just the floor tom!
Maybe one or multiple bigger than usual ventholes could Control the sustain in a - Natural - way,if it is one bigger
hole….maybe 3
to 4 inch in
diameter,it could althouh be use to do or remove the cottonball thing.
Wow, I didn't know Russell Crowe played drums! LOL
You’re not gonna believe this but he’s also got an entire channel with hundreds of videos dedicated to drum sounds and tuning. 🤯
Could be the reason why my 14“ stand Tom sounds like crap. Have to take the shit away I bunker underneath it 😅
A substitute for isolation mounts is dish sponges, works great 🧽
Great, then what am I meant to do with my degree in Applied Physics, Because so far it's been useless.
