In Australia those packets of rockwool cubes are expensive too. I found out that slabs of rockwool used by commercial growers of hydroponic tomatoes, cucumbers etc... are much cheaper. From an agricultural store slabs 1metre x 150mm are about $5 which you can get around 180 cubes from. As Australia is a pretty high cost country i am sure it would be around the same in the US or cheaper.
I have several large hydro beds filled with clay pellets. I use rock wool only on seeds that I intend to grow out in soil or potting mix. Plants that will go into my hydro beds I always start in potting mix. When the plants reach the size where they are big enough for the hydro system I remove them from their pots and wash all the soil off the roots and then make a deep hole in the clay pellets and place the bare plant in the hole getting the roots down far enough to be in dampness. My beds are ebb and flow and get flooded twice a day and then quickly draining back down to allow oxygen into the beds. It's actually an aquaponics set up with a six hundred gallon fish tank providing nutrients for the system. It's been running for six years now without issue. I would not put any type of rock wool or soil in my hydro beds. You get more humus in the system than you want simply from plant roots that break off when you remove the finished plants.
rockwool... wear gloves. I was using rocvkwool, then inadvertently rubbed one eye. I was fogged out blind in that eye for 3 days. A rockwool sliver went into my eye, got stuck in the inside of the eyelid... so every time I moved my eye, it scratched the eye. Use rockwool.. great. Don't touch anything afterward until you throughly wash your hands, I mean scrub your hands -- even under the fingernails, all of that. Just like handling fiberglass insulation. Damn stuff needs a caution label!!
Please change the header for this video to reflect what the content really is. Great video, but it's more on what mediums to choose from before starting. I'm left still required to be educated on how to get started seeding using the chosen medium. I'm sure you have other videos for just that, but that's why I began watching this one. Waisted my time imo.
Thank for the video. I learnt some knowledge about the growing media. Do you mind to share some experience about using potting mix for seed germination in hydroponic ? What have to be concern on this method ?
Do I have to fold the rockwool over on the seeds? I have no medium to fill the holes after putting the seeds in or will they be fine. Thank you for the information mate.
I bet you could use aquatic soil as well, like fluval stratum. I bet it would ultimately be less messy(just by its appearance) than soil, but im not sure since ive never worked with it.
Having low germination & slow growth with Oasis XL cubes. Not sure why. Previously been using rapid rooter peat plug for a long time and they work very well.
@@NewAgrarian Think some seeds have harder time penetrating the denser foam structure of Oasis cubes. Notice Oasis also have ES and Aeromax product line which claims to be less dense.
@@NewAgrarian I was wondering about coco coir, I’ve heard a lot of good things; anything beats dealing with fungus gnats; what’s the best one that can fit all types of big and tiny seeds ? I’ve only used potting mix, and I was wondering if I had a very tiny seed as opposed to a large one, can all of these conform to it ? So these go straight into the solution as a seed and just stay there ? Thanks ; )
If I germinate my seeds in rock wool, can I mix them with organic vegetable garden soil? I mean: Net pots will be placed in the vertical vegetable garden. Nursebags are placed in these net pots, which contain the germinated plants that have been grown in rockwool. To fill the space around the net pots and to hold the water more easily, I want to put vegetable garden soil around them...
I'm just getting into growing but I know you can cut the costs of the rockwool by buying the actual rockwool insulation and cutting the cubes yourself .. .
Only amateurs grow crops direct from seeds. The seeds are better used to find a mother plant thats good and proven and then take clones from that and root them in the rockwool. Then you get a uniform crop and they all grow at the same rate and finish at the same time.
I started with rockwool and it started out great. But, two weeks into getting growth, the growth started to get discolored and died. I watched the ph and that didn’t seem to make a difference.
@@NewAgrarian you showed different materials to start seeds with. The video says “how to start seeds with hydroponics” not “the different materials you can use to start hydroponics” you didn’t actually show how to germinate the seeds and how to get them to sprout.

Another consideration between Rockwood and oasis is that oasis is Ph neutral. Needs no Ph adjustment before use, where rockwool needs to be adjusted.
I had no idea I didnt have to use soil. About to dive into the world of Hydroponics now!
Yes sir
enjoy

Great tip
This is so informative! Thank you.
Thank you for this video. It is very helpful to see the comparison in media for propagating seeds.
Thanks for watching
I recommend washing and soaking cubes in a bucket of nutrient enriched water first
Very informative. Cheers from Tulua, Colombia 🇨🇴
Thanks so much for these videos. They are very helpful and are well produced. Keep up the great work!

They’ll be fine, always will have a few that don’t germinate

Maybe too wet ? Sometimes I do the vermiculite on top to increase germination

Some ppl use mixing soil as a seedling medium then when the root bounds they just wash all the soil away and put it in the net cups…
Interesting note about fish water. What about coco coir/husk? Thanks
I don’t use it but definitely another viable option

I use paper towel method to germinate seed first and then transplant to rockwool.
That would work too
Yep works 100%

I think that’d work yes
❤
Does rockwool pose a threat for root rot in a leaky system
Please tell me about perlite. How to germinate seeds in it?
use vermiculite
I wouldn’t use perlite … unless you’re going to remove the seedlings and put into other media
Great video!
Thanks man, hope you doing well

What kind of machine did you use to cut rockwool and oasis cubes? They look so perfect
Those come pre cut from the place you purchase them from.
Where do you buy your rockwool? I just purchased 48 cubes for $0.50.
Send link
Ty this is great!!
After planting seeds in oasis, what fertiliser do you added?
Depends on the plant, but around 3-4weeks you can add fertilizer to aid in root development
I started with rockwool and it started out great. But, two weeks into getting growth, the growth started to get discolored and died. I watched the ph and that didn’t seem to make a difference.
Maybe over watered ?
Have you ever tried rapid rooter or root riot?
I never have
Can the rockwool cubes be reused?
No
Here, 100cubes of rockwool is 2.5usd. Germination sponge costs half!
Where is that? What country?

No links to purchase this stuff?
Hi, miky. You can find on my page spandex sys demo.
Have you tried coco coir?
Soon
what about turfa?
You bringing soil into this video is like someone bringing Crack to 420.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Why not just use a cotton ball or a square of cosmetic sponge instead of rockwool? It seems to be the same basic principle.
Thought about using sponges in the past. Couldn’t find a decent price for large Qty of sponges. Then gotta cut them down etc. could work though
@@NewAgrarian facial/cosmetic sponges are cheap and come in large packs. Target, Walmart, probably even the dollar store.
By the way anti aging med beds dropped here as well as 90.10
what?
You need light and heat true
What about peat moss????
Never used it personally
Why not use coco instead?
Convenience. You can though
What kind of Phosphorous rich fertilizer do you use in the potting mix ?
Just use rock phosphate
Rockwool is that safe
Yes
In my country its only 1cents
Clicked on the video to learn how to start my seeds and I learned nothing about the actual steps and process to start my seeds lol.

Step 1- throw the seed in
Step 2- add water
Step 3- tada 🎉
