Where the Action Is 1965 - Action Kids dance to Liar, Liar by the Castaways

We return to the same southern CA schoolyard where the Action Kids danced to "Keep On Dancing" by the Gentrys. They taped several segments here in the Fall of ‘65.
"Liar, Liar" is at #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week and will peak at #12 in 3 weeks on October 30th. The Castaways, from Minneapolis, MN, appeared on 3 episodes of Where the Action Is (10/65, 01/66, and 02/66) singing “Liar, Liar” each time. (What a great song)
Dancers - their names are conveniently labeled on their shirts today, but in case you don't know, their full names are: Jerilyn Stapleton, Jill Gordon, Lesley Evans, Roberta Tennes, Joy Ciro, Steve Ciro, Pete Menafee, Roger Minami, and Mike Williams.

Absolutely fantastic! I have loved this song since I was a boy. Hard to believe these dancers bopped around to this tune almost 60 years back. Thanks for posting this, it made me smile.
Dick Clark appears in the beginning on what looks like a Schwinn Stingray, a very popular bicycle in that time period. Ah yes. Young people having fun with no attitude, looking happy and not like they are owed something or a victim. Great video. Great song.
Remember them but hadn't thought of those Stingrays in decades, lol.
I love the opening of this clip where Dick Clark, God rest his soul, was on a bicycle eating a hamburger.

I may be mistaken. I'm not a director, but I think this was choreographed. And i'm not sure Joy is a girl.
I remember rushing home from school to watch where the action is. No matter how fast I walked and ran I would always miss the first 5 minutes of it. Thank God they usually saved the best bits so everyone would watch til the end. I loved that show and when it went off the air I wasn’t sad for long because then I was rushing home to watch Dark Shadows. Those were the days.

@user-rc8dy2oh4cwell it wasn't a complete loss. We're still able to learn how to read the scribbling in the bathroom toilets and in the subway stations

Liar Liar was played constantly when this was big I enlisted in the U S Army Viet Nam was starting to get the attention. This song brings back those times when you knew something was happening. Still I respect every service man and women God Bless America

Liar Liar is a great song. It is a perfect 1960's pop rock song and it could not be better. Timing for the Castaways was fantastic right before psychedelic rock and right after folks rock era. Great job!

I grew up in a small town in Alabama that was building the Saturn V Moon Rocket. I remember the enveloping optimism of the times dearly. President Kennedy came to Huntsville twice. The future was tangible....then came Dallas and Vietnam ....
No matter how many times I hear this song, watch the clips or have seen The Castaways in person....I NEVER tire of this song. Thanks for the post and the mention, Aron. HAVE A SAFE WEEKEND, EVERYBODY!

I know of at least one that has passed away within the last handful of years. Roberta Tennes. As far as I know, the others are still around.

I'm very surprised that a show like Where the Action Js LITERALLY went toe to toe ( or rather step by step, move by move ) with Shindig, Hullabaloo and even Hollywood A-Go Go. And these dancers known as the Action Kids, may have been the underdogs in the dancing competition. While they're new to the scene ( at the time, while the dancers from Shindig, Hullabaloo and the Gazzari Dancers f/ H'Wood a-Go-Go were already making a name(s) for themselves ), they sure know how to put the ACTION in WTAI through their dance segments.
I was born 5 years AFTER Where the Action Is, and I'm seen other videos / performances from the mentioned shows on UA-cam, but it's great to see the rarest of these shows like WTAI making a name for themselves....even the host himself, the late, great Dick Clark. At least my ( comments ) pants weren't on fire 😁.

I saw The Castaways live in a church basement in West Htfd, Ct. touring on their hit "Liar LIar" in the mid 60's.

The Hair So New ad at the beginning of the video was one of many commercials sung by The Tokens during the mid-1960's. A few of the Tokens commercials are here on UA-cam. (One 1966 commercial for Great Shakes is sung by The Chiffons.)

We had an oldies concert here last month with 3 of the Cowsills, Gary Puckett, Turtles, Association ect I didn't get to go 😢 I was so bummed but I heard it was fantastic, seen all but the Cowsills before

Hi Don. Someone said they thought it was Sierra Vista Elementary in Perris, CA. I couldn’t find out online if that school was around in ‘65 so not sure, but from Google Earth it looks like it could be. 🤷🏼♂️
