  • There is a new 3D camera that has come on the market. The QooCam EGO is a point and shoot camera that allows images and video to be captured with actual ocular eye separation in stereoscopic 3D. With this video I cover some of the specifics particularly those relating to 3D. In the video I cover some interesting points like:
    • How does it compare to Fujifilm?
    • How does this viewer work?
    • Can you put your own content on the camera and view with the viewer?
    • Can you share content with others?
    • Can you stream live in 3D?
    Feel free to skip to the part of the video that interests you. To assist with this I have split the video into the following parts:
    00:00 Start
    01:08 Overview
    02:36 The Camera
    04:09 The Camera Screen
    08:04 The Mobile App
    13:26 Manual Focus
    16:33 Focus Offsets
    19:44 Sport Mode
    23:50 Stabilization
    26:14 Battery and Temperature
    27:45 The Viewer
    29:56 Viewer as Viewfinder
    32:40 Viewer Sync
    34:00 Viewing External Content
    35:05 Compare with Fujifilm
    39:52 Live Streaming
    41:26 Conclusion
    For live streaming, it is possible to stream to VLC player, to UA-cam, to a VR headset, to the Lume-Pad and to the ProMa King Tablet all stereoscopically.

    I recently bought an old Czechoslovak knockoff of the Viewmaster (Meoskop), and looking at the images really does make me say "wow" like when I saw Viewmaster images as a kid. Does this make you feel the same? I think that's the most important thing for me.
    BTW, interestingly the Czechs didn't treat their version as something for children -the reels they sold were overwhelmingly of tourist destinations rather than shots from Disney films. And quite surprisingly they did a line of reels featuring nudes (as this was the sixties, it was all wobbly bums and beehive hairdos).
    Got to say I really liked this review. Very detailed, and full of information. Many product "reviews" these days are just product advertisements.
    If I do buy this camera, and I like the results, I might buy some more for my kids. Then we could upload and share images together. That has always been one of the biggest drawbacks of stereo photography - sharing the results of your work.

      Thanks so much for your feedback. I too love the old Viewmaster, in fact I bought one to make this video. With it came reels of the moon landing and also tourist destinations as you say. I just got mine. I love it! battery life is still poor, and it does randomly freeze & crash sometimes, but autofocus is good and DRG format is supported at last.
    Connecting to other devices is still quirky. The latch on mine was stiff and still will not work unless you push on the battery door a little to take the pressure off it.
    I did almost break the camera trying to open it the first time, until I discovered that trick!

  • @duracell80
    @duracell80 3 місяці тому

    Great video. I love this camera, there should be more like this. The video desync with the viewer, if you look closely one side of the frame is upside down. Likely a thing with the mirrors, they might be doing some form of manipulation at playback to get the frame to be upside down and that could be adding the fraction of a second difference between eyes. They might be able to in software fix it by delaying the non-flipped eye?
    I'm working on some ffmpeg scripts to output anaglyph for both photos and video (though VLC can do video playback manipulation for anaglyph).
    If the subject is too close to the lens the anaglyph output needs shifting to reduce eye strain / sickness. Don't go too close to the subject and it should be fine. Shooting straight on seems to work best.

    Just the glasses-free 3D display screen on the back of the Fujifilm Finepix Real 3D W3 makes it a better investment than the Kandao. Hello, an extremely good tutorial about this camera and a very good comparison to the Fuji W3. I myself have the W3 and also a Sony HDR-10TDE. This makes very good videos, unfortunately with limited depth due to the low stereo base. It is also too big and too heavy. The Fuji W3, on the other hand, takes good pictures in daylight but miserable ones at dusk and even worse video. This is probably due to the video codec (Mpjeg). In order to always be able to set the right Stereo base, I have 2 GoPro action cams on an aluminum rod. The rod sits on a gimbal. Fantastic for landscape shots, but too bulky for snapshots. I have now ordered a Qoo Camm Ego and hope that it is a good compromise between the W3 and the gimbal. How does my video editing program (Vegas pro 18) have to be set to progressive or deinterlaced. Thank you!

    I just recently started exploring this space, and I was surprised to learn that there were at least 3 or 4 very interesting 180VR cameras that have all been discontinued. The EGO seems to be the only one left. I wonder what this means in terms of those manufacturers and their experience in the 180VR camera market.

      Would be interested to know, which are the 180VR cameras you are referring to that have been discontinued? I would probably not consider the EGO so much as a 180VR device as it's FOV is considerably less than 180 degrees. I would classify it more as a standard point-and-shoot. In my mind it is more a alternative to the earlier Fujifilm Finepix W3 camera, also a point-and -shoot.

    it's amazing how well the old fuji w3 holds up, I still use it. I've been on the fence on this camera for some time, only being 1080p it doesn't really bring anything new. the old gopro's were 1080p even up to 2.7k. I set up two new gopro 11's on a 3D z bracket, most of the time it works with in camera stabilization on, but not always. image quality is outstanding though in 5.3k. the fuji is still a better still 3d camera, flash, optical zoom lenses and a lenticular screen. battery life is better. but it isn't for video at all, it's terrible. stills only. the lenticular screen is really one of the biggest advantages, being able to check your images right after you shoot, that attachable screen, I would never bring that along.

      The quality is actually not too bad in my opinion. Another drawback is cross-talk - in VR headset you get none, but with red/blue glasses you will get some.

    How come it is a true 4K camera if per eye horizontal resolution is just 1080? World has a good apetite for 3D gadgets just that every one comes up with either half-baked products time and again or make them exceptionally pricey.

    • @ANAVision
      @ANAVision  9 місяців тому

      Whilst 2 x 1920*1080 creates equivalent of 4K in the horizontal direction (3840), it does not in the vertical direction which remains 1080. Hence you are quite right that this is not 4K. True 4K = 3840*2160.

    How do you view photos/videos taken by this camera,
    I have a large archive of old stereo pairs shot on film and now I'm busy digitizing them and turning them into 2D FLAT SBS frames. You can watch them on 3D TV. And on VR glasses like Oculus Quest 2, I could not do this. Have you tried this and how to do it?

    • @ANAVision
      @ANAVision  Рік тому +1

      Very good question. I should really do a video on this sometime. The simplest way to watch on Oculus Quest 2 I find is to bring up the image as a SBS on a PC screen, and then use Virtual Desktop App on Oculus Quest 2 to view them in 3D. You need to select Side by Side viewing of your PC screen for this (like what I do here ua-cam.com/video/J8sSeSUIMgM/v-deo.html in my other video). This way you should be able to view any SBS image (be that from stereo pairs digitised from film or from QooCam EGO) stereoscopically.

      To watch the videos on Quest 2 or Pico 4 I suggest downloading to your PC from the SD card (then there is no need to download to Samsung S8 or Galaxy Tab first), play them using a player like VLC and then viewing using Virtual Desktop app in your headset. Ensure you set to SBS mode so you see them stereoscopically. I believe this works for mac also. Alternatively, on Quest 2 you can upload the videos to your headset and play them directly in BigScreen, again set SBS mode on.

    I recently bought a QooCam EGO and have the same problem - I want to watch videos on my LG 3D TV. This also requires the SBS Half format.
    Through a series of manipulations, I assembled the following video editing procedure from photos and videos taken with this camera on a computer (I do not use editing on a smartphone):
    1 Photos are cropped from 8000x3000 to 3840x1080
    2 Filmed videos are usually stabilized in the camera itself.
    3 I edit video using PowerDirector's 3D capabilities from a combination of video and photo. In this case, it is necessary to indicate to the program that this is exactly 3D SBS.
    4 Export video 3D SBS Full Width H264 (L/R) MPEG-4 1920x1080/50p Double
    5 in VEGAS Pro I convert MP4 SBS Full to SBS Half or OU Half - as you wish. At the same time, it is also necessary to indicate that this is a 3D video.
    Such files can be viewed both on 3D TV and in Quest 2 via SkyBox. Moreover, the stereo effect seems to me more on 3D TV.
    It may not be the most optimal process, but I've only made two clips so far. You can watch on UA-cam: ua-cam.com/video/FS2gxNMQX3I/v-deo.html

    • @ANAVision
      @ANAVision  Рік тому

      True about the per eye resolution. It's intriguing the whole question of resolution. I've noticed that having depth in an image can enhance the sense of high fidelity to a similar extent as resolution. Surprisingly, I'm willing to accept a lower level of resolution when there is depth, as both factors seem to contribute to the sharpness of the image. It may seem odd, but there appears to be a correlation between resolution and depth in terms of their impact on perceived image quality.

      @@ANAVision Shortly after checking out this video I discovered that I had some misunderstanding about VR video, in that sense that I though that 3D video automatically also was equal to "VR180" or "3D180" video, which turned out not to be the case. Then found out that KanDao's next device (which isn't available yet in Europe at least) can actually do both. So, I decided to wait and see when that reaches the European market. In mean time I had to figure out whether I wanted to go for 180/360 video or for 3D/twin-lense video. And I decided to go for the budget friendly Kodak 360 4K camera, for just 180 eur, and which does seem to come with decent software. In practice: it is garbage!!! basically a TOY, I was very happy that a manufacturer finally made a new stereoscopic camera in 2021 with modern sensors after 12 years of nothing.
    This was designed in an air-conditioned LAB by theoretical engineers that never actually USED the product in a REAL or practical environment
    I took it on a 3000 Mile road-trip, (which cost at lest $3000 )
    50% of all video and images unusable out of focus because EVERYTIME you have to remember to focus it manually even if you are pointing at a mountain (infinity)
    30% lost video footage due to camera turning itself off without warning for over heating (at a cool 50F ambient surroundings), in the middle of filming.
    10% lost images because it takes 40-60 looong seconds for booting up, by this time the clouds have moved, the scene or event has gone.
    so what todo? keep it always on!
    how do you do that with a PATHETIC battery which barely lasts 20-30 minutes when new?
    I used an external 10,000 battery pack in a handheld monopod, but then this useless POS-CAMERA turns off due to over heating. (not even a graceful shutdown)
    ALSO THE AUDIO is MUFFLED and FAINT, you have to AGC it in a video editor after the fact, which what little footage you have left,
    lucky I had my ~10-12 years old JVC stereoscopic camcorder and my ancient Fuji W3 to make up for the loss,
    only thing going for this POS camera is the size, the bright LCD which makes it more usable outside and modern sensors, which also make it surprisingly light sensitive and much better than the Fuji and JVC (and the 3D sony I no longer use) for 3D in low light.
    also no zoom, but has the widest angle VS the others which is good. water proof is good but you have the battery door permanently open for using an external USB battery.

I've demonstrated the camera at the regional meeting of the DGS (German-Stereograpic-Society) and the possibility to use the camera as a slide viewer was highly appreciated. Unfortunately a slideshow is not implemented - that would be a way to improve the viewer even more. I was able to watch side by side pictures in JPG format.

      Reiner, that's fantastic that you demonstrated this at the DGS. Are you a member?
      I too have tried what you describe before, with limited success. It did not work in all cases for me, particularly my fujifilm mpo to jpg translations. I did not want viewers to get stuck on this, assuming there would be a few trying fujifilm images like myself. So decided to provide a method that worked for all my tested cases by using a mp4 slideshow. I have tried a few things at the time in an attempt to get the jpg images to work (including the renaming you describe) such as resizing and using various different metadata, but it all did not work so I gave up. Would be interested to know - have you per chance tried translating any mpo files to SBS jpg and viewing them in the QooCam EGO? If anyone gets this to work would love to know what method of file transfer from mpo to jpg was used.
