- Episode 6 | Rodos Season - Prasonisi, Car rental and consequences of the fireworks of 2023.
Prasonisi is a unique and breathtaking spot located on the southern tip of Rhodes, one of Greece's largest and most historically rich islands. Known for its distinctive dual beaches, Prasonisi is where the Aegean and Mediterranean seas converge, creating a paradise for water sports enthusiasts and beach lovers alike.
Getting to Rhodes
Getting to Rhodes is quite straightforward. The island is well-connected by air, with numerous flights from major European cities landing at Rhodes International Airport (Diagoras Airport). From there, you can easily reach Prasonisi by car, which is about an hour and a half drive from the airport.
Renting Cars in Rhodes: A Pleasant Surprise
When it comes to exploring Rhodes, renting a car is highly recommended. During our trip, we were pleasantly surprised by the efficiency and affordability of car rentals on the island. Renting a car not only provides the freedom to explore at your own pace but also allows you to visit remote spots that aren’t accessible by public transport. We rented a compact car from a local agency, and the process was smooth and hassle-free. The roads are generally well-maintained, and driving around the island is a delightful experience with scenic views at every turn.
Exploring Prasonisi
Prasonisi’s main attraction is its geographical uniqueness. Depending on the time of year and tide, Prasonisi can either be an island or a peninsula. During the summer, the water level drops, revealing a sandy causeway that connects it to the mainland. This natural phenomenon creates two distinct beach areas - one facing the Aegean Sea with rougher waves, ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing, and the other facing the Mediterranean Sea, offering calm, tranquil waters perfect for swimming and sunbathing.
Water Sports Paradise
For adrenaline junkies, Prasonisi is a dream come true. The windy side of the beach is renowned for windsurfing and kitesurfing, attracting enthusiasts from all over the world. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner looking to take lessons, Prasonisi has something for everyone. Several local schools offer equipment rental and professional instruction, making it easy to dive into these thrilling water sports.
Local Cuisine and Dining
No trip to Rhodes would be complete without indulging in the local cuisine. Prasonisi has a few charming tavernas where you can savor traditional Greek dishes. Fresh seafood, Greek salads, and local wines are just a few of the culinary delights you can enjoy. I highly recommend trying the grilled octopus and the classic Greek moussaka - both were absolutely delicious and a true highlight of our dining experience.
Exploring Beyond Prasonisi
Historical Sites
Rhodes is rich in history, and it’s worth taking some time to explore beyond Prasonisi. The ancient city of Kamiros, the medieval Old Town of Rhodes, and the Acropolis of Lindos are just a few historical sites that are a must-visit. Each of these locations offers a glimpse into the island’s storied past and architectural marvels.
Consequences of the Fires of July 2023
Before we wrap up, it’s important to touch on the recent events that have impacted Rhodes. In July 2023, the island experienced devastating wildfires that affected large areas, including some natural and residential regions. While this was a tragic event, the resilience and spirit of the local community have been truly inspiring. Restoration efforts are well underway, and many parts of the island, including Prasonisi, remain as beautiful and welcoming as ever.
Travelers should be aware of potential areas that might still be recovering and respect any local guidelines or restrictions. Supporting local businesses and the tourism industry is more important than ever, as it helps the island rebuild and thrive once again.
