Holy molly 😂😂😂 That is wild that you can make a knife like this! I love the way you made the silver pommel and ornamentation! Your new videos are such high quality I could watch them forever, and I get sad when they end😂 One thing that I think would be awesome to see in the video is some cutting tests, just to showcase your sharpening skills and to show people how well your knives work, this is just a thought though 🙃 your videos are already top notch! God bless🙏🏻
Thanks bro! I appreciate that and you checking the video out. As far as the test cuts I have had a lot of trouble with this as I would like to include them as part of the “pay-off” of the video, especially for sword builds and what not. The reason I don’t on builds like this one though is because sharpening is the last step before I ship it to the customer, and if I were to test cut with it I risk ruining the finish on the blade (begin the natural tarnishing process that happens to High carbon steel etc). That’s something I can’t risk on a high-priced build but on some of my other builds that aren’t as fancy here I do have cut tests at the ends 🤠 I hope that makes sense, thanks again man, God bless
@ That totally makes sense! I would do the same thing, you’re killing it man your videos are good enough on their own. It was just something I thought of and now I totally see why you don’t. Keep it up😄
I learn so much Everytime I watch your stuff! I recently started making some cu mai chefs knives and was fighting some warping the entire time I was grinding. I thought I was going crazy, but glad to know it's not just me 😂😂
Thank you for that! And thanks for being here and checking out the video! I’m glad to hear it helped in that way, it drove me nuts the first few I did and couldn’t figure out why it was kicking off to one side during grinding! Best of luck with them! God bless - Ian
This Was awesome. I always wanted to do some kind of a Sterling in inlay along with gems , now I see it now I can do it. Awesome job can’t wait to try it myself. It would be great Also to see the way you sharpen and hone these knives? Best regards from your New York people! Peace ✌️
Very beautiful, but as a chef I wouldn't want a knife with this level of ornamentation. At least on the blade itself. Most of us grip the knife right there with the thumb and index finger, and I feel like you wouldn't get a good feel for the blade with that in the way.
Thank you for the compliment! And I appreciate the input; I base virtually all of my knives to be grabbed comfortably at the pinch point like you described and this one is actually somewhat comfortable and more tarnish resistant as the silver acts as a somewhat shield to the blade. That being said I 100% agree that the ornamentation isn’t a practical or functional choice, this one was completely custom designed and will most likely be kept as an art piece in the clients home, but the rest of the knife is built to be a functional tool 🤠 thanks for checking it out and it’s really cool to hear you’re a chef, I always appreciate the input like that as I am not a chef but need to better my understanding continually of how these tools are used and function in practicality like that! Another practical issue I faced was sealing the small gap between that piece and the blade, that way when food is cut, it doesn’t get pushed up into that void. I believe I did a pretty solid job at this but that’s another example where the artistry and aesthetic triumphed over the practicality a little bit
@@IanZ_Forge I was thinking about that too, and how it might be possible to get the best of both worlds. Maybe if the back of the spine was thinned out right around that area, either during forging or chiseled after, it would be possible to make the ornamentation flush with the rest of the blade. Copper would be a good metal for it since it has inherent antibacterial properties and looks beautiful even with a patina. It could also be hammered in to get that bumpy texture which might add some grip to it, as well as minimising the gaps between the ornamentation and the blade where water could accumulate.
I’m using the drawing dies there - I never recommend forging a tip with the flat dies as that’s an easy way to create coldshuts and cracks in the steel! Thank you for checking out the video! God bless - Ian
Hey man! Thanks for watching the video! And I appreciate the input on that, I tried to answer Nolan down below on this as well but the honest reason to why I don’t do any cut tests on these higher-priced builds is because i risk damaging the finish on the blade before it sees the customer. Because this is high-carbon steel, it will naturally tarnish as acidic food is cut, and this causes some slight discoloration. Because sharpening is done after the knife is finished and assemble, I can’t just repolish, re etch, etc it before I send it away. All this being said if you check out some of my other, not as fancy, builds I do include some cut tests 🤠 God bless man
This was a big concern of mine when making the bolster - to help prevent this I sealed it with a layer of professional-grade epoxy underneath and a layer of paste wax over the seams 🤠 thanks for checking this project out and being here!
Oof I am not sure what’s going on there but I’m glad you checked out the video! That must be a UA-cam feature kicking in for some reason, did it like make everything I was saying Spanish instead of English?? God bless - Ian
Have you seen those Foredom silver needler tools? Like a tiny air hammer for pushing silver around . I have not tried one but pretty sure it's for this. nice work
Hey thanks for being here! And yes I have actually; we use them as bench jewelers for a few different things but I sadly don’t have one at my home shop, we always called it a hammer hand piece and it’s amazing! Thanks for the recommendation!
This is the most ginger person I seen he even has 2 orange cats and lives in an orange house
