WOW! Thank you so much for this tutorial. I've taken classes at a University, but there are so many little things that would have made my life easier. Like how you snipped the spiral boning so easily and that trick of putting the eyelet on the bigger awl (or whatever that too was) and then using it to slide it through the hole. Thanks again!
I love the fairy look is adorable, thanks your tutorial is useful and provides more ideas...
That was INCREDIBLE!! I'm blown away. You are an artist.
Thank you 💗
That dress looks absolutely stunning and this will help me a lot on my own project! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you. I'm glad my video was helpful for you. Thanks for watching 🙂

That turned out fantastic!
Did you film dying the dress? I think I'm about to go binge watch your videos! Great to find a dressmaker / designer from my part of the world! ☺
👍💜
Thank you. I did film dyeing the dress as part of the transformation video. You can see it here - ua-cam.com/video/3ulZLme3wpw/v-deo.html
I also have an ombre dye tutorial here - ua-cam.com/video/gFChB5KdMkE/v-deo.html
@@RockstarsandRoyalty ooooohhh THANKS!! 😁
You've made this girl super happy!
Beautiful
I notice you aren’t using a spiral lacing technique with the ribbon. Is there a reason you don’t? I have found that the edges are more prone to abrasion and to not close as well when using the method you show.
Awesome!!
This is an amazing tutorial. I'm trying to adapt a pattern to lace up the back but prior to sewing it, so I'm wondering how you add boning to the interior layer and then cover with exterior and lining. Doesn't that cause problems with the bones?
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the tutorial. There's 2 ways you can do it - you can add the bones ad bone casings to the lining before you join the lining and outside together, or you can join the outside and lining together and stitch through both layers to create the bone casings. When you adapt a zip up pattern to a lace up pattern make sure you take some of the width off at the centre back so that you have a gap or it will be too close together to lace up properly. Hope that helps. Vicky 🙂
Beautiful!
Awesome tutorial! I'm going to be modifying a pattern from zipper back to a lace-up back and this'll be my first time doing it. What are the tools you're using to cut the hole and put in the eyelets and grommets called and where did you get them? Thanks!
Thank you. I'm glad it was helpful for you. I use an awl to cut a small hole for the eyelets/ grommets (you'll find awls in sewing supplies, but they can be a bit flimsy. Mine is heavier duty one that I found at a hardware store). I then stretch the hole to the right size with a tapered metal rod, which I bought years ago at a market. I have no idea what it's intended use was! Metal knitting needles are a great alternative. Always aim to cut a tiny hole and stretch it - if you cut a hole the right size the fabric will fray our from behind your grommet. Hope that helps. Have fun sewing your project 🙂
Thank you so much, explain so well.
You're very welcome!
Hi. I have a body con dress with a side zip & it's too small. I want to take out the side zip, stitch up the SS closed, and then create a seam at the back to insert a corset. Do you know how to create a seam on a garment from scratch?
Hi. Loved this tutorial, as I have a prom dress that I need to alter for a young lady. It no longer zips up. I have never worked with grommets, so I plan on adding loops for the lace up. My question to you is would you sew the loops between the edge and the boning or inside the boning? I was just going to use one row of boning (1/2”). The dress is a black satin & I am trying to minimize the lines of stitching showing. It already has boning sewn in the lining around the bodice, and I plan on sewing the boning also to the lining, but am afraid it may pull when laced up.
I haven't worked with loops a lot, but I would suggest sewing them between the edge and the boning. You can stitch them on the seam allowance just past where the fabric folds under, with the loops facing inwards towards the dress, then when the seam allowance folds back, the loops flip to the outside. If you're seam alowance isn't wide enough, just sew on some extra fabric. You can also sew boning onto the seam allowance and turn that to the inside as well (either sew in plastic boning or a bone casing for steel). With this method you have everything attached to the outside layer of the dress but without the stitching showing on the outside. I hope that makes sense! In my upcycled Belle dress video I sew boning on this way if you want to have a look at that. Let me know if you have any more questions.
That was amazing😍👍 Tysm ❤
Can u plz make a upper part withhigh neck and long sleeves
Hello, I'm planning on making a corset with a lace up back instead of a hook and eye back, how will I know how much fabric to leave out from the bodice to make room for the lace up part? Thank you ♡
It depends if you want a gap or not and whether the edges will be parallel or in a 'v' when laced up. I usually take of at least 2 or 3 inches in total because I don't like the edges to meet. Doing a toile fitting can help you decided.
@@RockstarsandRoyalty I would like it to look like yours, I really love how elegant and gorgeous your dress is and I would love to make my dress that bomb as well. I don't know what a toile fitting is, can you explain it please?
Are you making it from scratch or altering something you already have?
If you're making it from scratch, make the pattern up in a cheap fabric, such as calico or muslin. This is your toile, and you can fit it and mark any alterations as needed, and also decide how much you need to take off for the gap during the fitting process. From there you mark the changes onto your pattern and can make it up in the real fabric knowing it will fit well.
If you're altering something from zip up back to lace up back, put it on and mark where you want the finished edges to be at the back.
Hope that helps 🙂
Madam do u has cutting and stitching tutorials?
Też bym tak sukienkę Z gorsetem i związany kokardkę naj mocniej nogą zaciągnięty czy nie XD A boli jak wiążesz gorset mocno czy można stracić oddech czy nie XD
hi, where do you get your boning from please?
I'm in Australia and buy my corsetry supplies from Metro Fabrics - metrofabrics.com.au/collections/corsetry-supplies
Rockstars and Royalty thank you! sorry to bother you more, did you get your eyelet set online?
I buy my eyelets wholesale from here because I get through so many! www.eyelets.com.au/
I'm not sure where the best place to buy similar quality ones in smaller quantities is though. Sorry!
Can you wash a garment with eyelets?
The eyelets I use are washable. Check with the manufacturer of the brand that you use in case it varies, and check the the washing instructions for the garment itself.
Could you tell me where did you get the tool from the long pointy one
I bought it at a car boot sale about 20 years ago. I'm not sure what it's real purpose is! Anything long and tapered will work for stretching the holes, such a chop sticks or knitting needles.
Do the eyelets rust overtime?
I've never had a problem with that happening. Make sure you use a good quality brand.
So I have a question when you were sewing that panel in do you only see in that top corner of the dress or do you see that top plus that side at the bottom
I just sew it in at the top on one side. That way it's got some movement so that you can get it sitting perfectly straight once the dress is laced up. Hope that helps. Thank for watching 🙂
@@RockstarsandRoyaltyokay and yes thank you very much for your video
Hiw did you dye it please? Can you so a video on that please?
You can see how I dyed the dress in this video - ua-cam.com/video/3ulZLme3wpw/v-deo.html
And I have a video about how to ombre dye here - ua-cam.com/video/gFChB5KdMkE/v-deo.html
My grommets only go to the waist and then it zips up from the waist down, the zip is never seen due to overlays. Can I use the same method and not have bunny ears?
Yes, that should work fine without bunny ear lacing.
Awesome
Thank you 🙂
hi, i wounder if you could help me - i found your channel whilst looking for a tutorial on adding a corset back to a dress - i am making a dress for my young daughter the pattern calls for a zipper closure but she really wants a lace up back - my question is do i need to put the boning in at the back? as she is only 7 i don't want her to be uncomfortable also if i do need it can i attach the boning to the lining? instead of the fashion fabric? as i am using lace i don't want to ruin the effect by sewing lines over it! i have only been sewing clothes for 2 years so i would really appreciate your input if you feel you can offer any - regards lindseyx (me and my daughter love your videos btw)
Hi Lindsey, welcome to my channel. I'm glad to hear that you and your daughter are enjoying my videos :)
I would recommend putting boning at the back of the dress for doing a lace up - it keeps the edges even and stops the fabric bunching up when you tighten the lacing. If you use a soft plastic boning it shouldn't be uncomfortable for your daughter. You can definitely attach the boning to the lining rather than the fashion fabric - that's what I usually do. If you're changing the pattern from zip up to lace up, make sure you take some fabric away at the centre back, unless you want it to lace right together. Hope that helps. Have fun sewing. Vicky xo
thank you so much for getting back to me! i am going to give it ago over the next few days! i'll let you know how i get on - i really appreciate your help lindseyx
No problem. Happy to help. I'd love to hear how you get on. Let me know if there's any tutorials that you'd like to see on my channel :)
Hello, I too am making a dress for my 7 yr old granddaughter simplicity vintage 8103 which has a 3 button closure . Please do a tutorial for all of us that sew for little girls ! Show us how to measure and cut and sew in corseting instead of zippers or buttons. Thank you in advance! Xoxo from Philadelphia, PA USA 🇺🇸
I’m here because I bought this beautiful dress for a Christmas performance I was singing at and my zipper had broken the night before and I fixed it and it broke again just before I was about to go on so I had to go out with the back open which wasn’t that bad because it wasn’t facing the audience but I was really disappointed because the dress was supposed to flare out but since it was open in the back it wasn’t as flared
Hi, i’m not if i just didn’t hear it but what kind of fabric did you use for the casing?
Hi, I used a white cotton to make these ones, but any woven fabric with no stretch would work. I often use silk dupion or satin for decorative external bone casings and cotton or drill for internal. Iron-on interfacing can be used to make them firmer too if necessary. Hope that helps 😊
Rockstars and Royalty ohh i see this totally helps thanks!
You're welcome. Happy sewing 🙂
What sewing machine are you using?
A vintage Singer (made in 1952)
