Little bit of everything here, that manic thrash energy, the crushing power of death metal, the evil proto-black metal sound, all tied together with Trey’s unique and otherworldly songwriting: “Back then, I really wanted to destroy everybody. I wanted people to have to work a lot harder after the fans witnessed what we had going on. I wanted to smoke people. I really believed that bands were challenging each other, trying to outdo each other and make each other quit - almost like the rivalries with East Coast and West Coast rappers. I really kind of thought people wanted to write parts that would engulf the whole world. I wanted to get onstage and have people go, "Holy shit - what the fuck is going on?" I wanted to write stuff that would make other bands run and hide. It's not really very nice, but that's what drove me."
Who the fuck says you can't sing along to death metal? "ghouls attack the church, crush the holy priest" is one of the most memorable lines in any song in any genre, how the fuck couldn't you sing along to it.
Man one of the reasons I recorded one of my albums straight thru no punch was because Pete did it and I was like I need to at least try. And I succeeded with about half the songs. The other half took 2-3. Granted, while the drums I played weren't easy, they weren't Commando level. But at least I know I COULD do a 1 take even tho I never did again 😅
Chapel Of Ghouls [Music: Azagthoth] [Lyrics: Azagthoth, Browning] Ghouls attack the church Crush the holy priest Turning the cross towards hell Writhe with satan's flames Crush the priest The feeble church [Solo: Brunelle] Dead - your god is dead Fools - your god is dead Useless prayers of lies Behold satan's rise Crush the priest The feeble church The family of dog Lust upon my altar [Solo: Azagthoth] [Solo: Brunelle] Demons attack with hate Satan in the fires of hell awaits Death against you all God hear my death call [long Chorus] [Solo: Brunelle]

Trey and Brunelle, perfect combination, chaos and melody. This album and abominations of desolation almost the same but still different. The best death metal.
This is not only one of the best Death Metal songs of all time, this is one of the best songs ever written. If you don't get it, smoke up and listen to this again...
Came here after watching a couple of Cradle of Filth videos for the very first time - sorry COF, but Morbid Angel were doing it far better 30 years ago!
I fucking know morbid ángel in consecuence by my brother in 2003 he show me Leading of the rats hes make me crazy i have 23 today and i feel this album like a first time
I once had a rehearsal tape with songs on it from before Blessed Are The Sick came out. I was blown away by the power, the riffing. Then the LP came out and I felt like the quality studio recording was a bit of a let down. Succeeding releases lacked the power and the riffing even more so. It never got better than Altars Of Madness.

Pete Sandoval is unstoppable. No pro-tools or drum replacement technology. This was recorded straight to tape.
With Cthullus help!

Chapel Of Ghouls
[Music: Azagthoth]
[Lyrics: Azagthoth, Browning]
Ghouls attack the church
Crush the holy priest
Turning the cross towards hell
Writhe with satan's flames
Crush the priest
The feeble church
[Solo: Brunelle]
Dead - your god is dead
Fools - your god is dead
Useless prayers of lies
Behold satan's rise
Crush the priest
The feeble church
The family of dog
Lust upon my altar
[Solo: Azagthoth]
[Solo: Brunelle]
Demons attack with hate
Satan in the fires of hell awaits
Death against you all
God hear my death call
[long Chorus]
[Solo: Brunelle]
best song off of the entire album. love the interlude solos with Pete smashing his drums into the ground
Agreed, Trey kills it on that song. In fact, this entire album is excellent

Magical pain!
3:30 to 4:13 I've always felt, were the most horrific and scary music and vocal combos ever recorded, by anyone, ever.
U damn right about that
You're right and the solo prior to it is sweetest cry of angels at the gates of heaven
