      The Mr crunch is not a replacement for the crunch, and the Crunch isn’t actually discontinued, in fact I just bought a new one because I’m putting my old one on the side for abuse in my bead making. Wow i dont want to be the only one and clearly i am not the only one but we can all agree that your review is awesome, but thats it the tool is great but the price tag is making everyone even collectors look like idiots for buying it. The packaging is not special very little special features on the tool. This makes me just not support leatherman. A lot more individuals are moving on to designated pliers like the small knipex cobra and making their own EDC pouch. Tool is great but they really want but is an insult to our intelligence to even consider it at the price point.

    • @TheOpinionarium
      @TheOpinionarium  Рік тому

      The current price point isn’t whatsoever relevant to the original 200 dollar price tag, which I found very reasonable this is a prototype released in a small quantity, I’d say that’s much better than other companies releasing the same product in different colors and charging more for them because they are “limited edition” (Olight, Kershaw, Etc)
      This was a really cool little release and though I do wish it would’ve been in more quantity, I think it was the best of any of the Garage Releases by far. Regardless, I do see your point and while a lot of people are adopting the carry separate pliers ideology, I prefer one Leatherman over trying to cram a tool kit in my pocket. That’s preference, however. Thanks for the comment!

      @@TheOpinionarium they're called parallel jaw pliers. You can look up the many years for parallel jaw pliers. Not to be confused with things like the Knipex pliers wrench with parallel jaws and a can system that lock the jaws in place for high torque applications. Look at the "Bernard parallel jaw pliers." This thing has gone from some promotional article I saw trying to get people excited for, to receiving very negative reviews on less than a week.
    Not a good start for Leatherman Garage. I *really* hope they take the constructive criticism to heart and worn to improve their next project.

    • @TheOpinionarium
      @TheOpinionarium  2 роки тому

      I think the harshest criticism is price, which is the only one I seem to really disagree with. Everyone was expecting a product that felt finished, revolutionary, and seemed to glaze over the fact that this is a working prototype that was produced in limited quantities. It’s not up to par, it’s not perfect. It’s a really, really cool concept though, and I see a very large amount of potential for a future finished production variant.
      I feel most garage items will likely be similar, concepts the engineers get to test. To put into perspective just how concept level these are, if you look at the face where the pliers aren’t overlapping you’ll notice a portion of metal on either side that looks unfinished. If you compare the blunts to the P4 pliers you realize they literally took and ground down 500 P4 plier heads, likely basically by hand (with tools of course) to work here. These weren’t made for this, they were modified for it. That really says it all imo

    You know that putting the fullsize bit holder in would have been super easy to do right? Leatherman does not want to make the perfect multitool otherwise its the last model they sell. It needs to have 1 or 2 things that can be ''improved'' in the next model for you to keep buying them. Also the fact that the pliers without teeth are not parallel makes them useless.

    the eyeglass bit would work really well as a heavy duty field sewing needle, if the bit had a eyelet. love the plier head. a couple screw removal teeth cut into the tip of the blunt nose would had been cool. love the new chisel. my p4 has been very impressive. often push it past where I think it will be damaged and it comes out without a scratch. hopefully Leatherman will use the garage version as a quality assurance prototype to make us a even better Mr Crunch. the unique design of the needle nose pliers will surely be found useful in unexpected ways. super fun to see the founders original concept finally produced. I of course carry several dedicated tools at work but my p4 is raining supreme over my other multi tools (in hotel maintenance). the path of least resistance in the one handed accessibility of all the tools just makes my day better.
    there's no doubt in my mind being able to fold the needle nose out of the way will be a useful feature. great video thanks

      I agree a multitool will never be as good as the full sized counterparts of all of its tools, but for a lot of people who don’t have all those tools anyhow (and rarely need them) multitools get the job done,
      I worked in maintenance for years and my two favorite tools in that line of work were my ST300, and my Ryobi industrial glue gun. Multitools aren’t the best solution, but they’re small enough to be on your person wherever you may be, and whenever you might need them

    • @littlejackalo5326
      @littlejackalo5326 2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, it's just because you're not doing things in your life where you would need it. There are plenty of jobs and lifestyles where having those type on you for immediate access make sense. I need to pull a cotter pin, I can whip out the multi tool. I need to quickly tighten a door stop... Tighten a switch cover plate... Tighten a drawer pull... Loosen the cover on a caliper battery door, and a litany of other tasks. Those are the tasks I used it for in the past day. When you're doing a job like construction, ranching, and stuff like that, it doesn't make sense to carry around a canvas bag all day long, or have to keep walking to the side by side or truck to grab a tool. Of course the guy going to work a 9-5 isn't going to bed a multi tool, but there are plenty of guys that will.

    For $200 this thing needs a premium blade and real tools instead of the “tools” that came off of the kid’s tools known as the Rev, Sidekick, Bolster, and Wingman. The pliers are cool and the Free system is cool but the “tools” they went with for this and the Free series are trash. The drivers slip way more than something you’d find on any other tool, the saw is not nearly as good as any other tool, the scissors don’t cut worth a damn, the file is a joke, and the awl having a screwdriver tip instead of a sharp point is just ridiculous. I’ve had two P4s (never got to test one and then a year later I got another one) and ended up not being impressed. • @TheOpinionarium
      @TheOpinionarium  2 роки тому +1

      @@perrycollicutt2861 no matter what tool they make, there will be people who love it and hate it. Fact of the matter is that everyone is different and needs different tools. They have a wide range of already existing tools that do a lot of cool things, and I don’t think I can fault them for experimenting. Many people find that saw handy, many others don’t. It comes down to where we are, and what we do. A multitool is a platform with a large array of tools that can be handy in many places, not necessarily handy for every instance.
      As for a custom tool, I agree this would be cool, but it would cost a lot more I believe because each one would be assembled differently. I would like to see a custom feature from leatherman in the future, but I will and cannot harp on engineers doing their best to invent and innovate.

    • @christopherroth7239
      @christopherroth7239 2 роки тому +2

      @@TheOpinionarium I agree with all that 100%. I just don't see customization working like people think it will. They arent going to build each tool from scratch so it will still be based off one particular model (whether existing or new). There will also be a limited configuration of tools that will fit together so it's not going to be a true customization. I think there will still be plenty of bitching and moaning about it if it ever comes to fruition.

    • @TheOpinionarium
      @TheOpinionarium  2 роки тому +1

      @@christopherroth7239 exactly my thoughts. Looking over at the Goat tool provides a similar experience. If you want a truly customizable tool it’ll need a bigger, wider frame and either smaller blades or bigger handles length wise. The pliers would have to be far enough from the pliers internally or externally (if they go that route) that those blades could fit anywhere. This frame would be too bulky for most people, I believe. If I could just say “put a file there instead of scissors” I’d be happy as a clam, but I doubt that’ll happen either

    The flat fold out plier head tips are actually pretty nice. Particularly for bending small things without worrying about scratching or marring. For example I have used my Leatherman to fix my flashlight pocket clip when it has gotten bent out of shape. I have to use a cloth or innertube clipping to protect the finish from the teeth.
    To make people happy in a production version. They should offer a cross hatched pattern to the jaw face. Partially serrated blade for some people, and in general just sell the bit driver, and chisel separately for anyone with a P2 or P4 that wants to add them to their tool. That could make them a lot of money. I doubt they will do that though. It makes too much sense.
    I knew you wouldn't be able to bring yourself to use that Leatherman as a daily carry. Even though it's almost a parts bin special. Aside from the plier head, bit driver, and chisel. The sheath is basically the same design as the old sheaths they sold with their budget tools. Two pieces of Leather riveted together? Cheap to make. Sewing it together would make it stronger and more durable long term and prevent the rivets from scratching the brushed finish of the tool over time. No S30V blade steel, no premium materials on the rest of the tool. You are paying for their research and development. So I can't say it's a bad business decision.
    However I do not see the merit in the 500 sprint run. If no one wants to actually use and abuse the tool and properly test to see how useful it is to carry around daily. Give valid feedback. How will Leatherman know it's a success? With the market the way it is. If you offer a limited edition or sprint run of just about anything popular. Collectors and scalpers looking to make money will buy them all up.

      I may well have decided to carry it had I not decided it seemed too breakable. The connection points for the needle nose tips are thin and I’ve broken more robust pliers than these before. I have a legendary ability to break things that I can’t replace and that is why I decided not to.
      As for the sheathe, it may be basic but seldom do we see them like that these days amongst the nylon. As for sewing, I’ve had a bad history with sewed sheathes myself, including the previously mentioned nylon sheathes.
      I appreciate the comment, have a good night!
