Anne of Cleves was probably never unattractive. Her description is very nice, and her portrait looks most beautiful compared to all the other portraits of the Queens of Henry VIII. She was also intelligent, she learned English fast and the only reason she wasn’t very clever when Henry met her was because she wasn’t well-educated. It’s nice to see she remained close with her stepchildren.
Escaped the perils of childbirth and had the best food and medical care possible but still died before 50. Eleanor of Aquitane, meanwhile had minus 400 years of medical advancements vs Anne, gave birth to multiple children including King John at the ripe old age of 44 years old and lived up to 82. Shit's unfair.
I think Anne understood it was better to stay away from him and so did not complain when Henry VIII wanted to divorce her.. she gave him what he wanted and her life was safe!!
Thank you. Interestingly, I listened to the German account of the story of failure of the marriage. It was soooooo different. Really worth a listen to. I’ve always thought she was really pretty and, with her noble upbringing, would have made a good wife. A queenly queen like Catherine of Aragon. Who knows, they could have had sons. She was certainly young enough. Stupid man 🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
I imagine it was much as it is today, where it's more likely to affect the over 50s but can affect people at any age. Therefore there would have been less of it around simply due to the fact that people were less likely to live to prime cancer age, but some people would still get it.
Really? Asbestos dining cloths and tapestries? Lead filled makeup. Mercury filled makeup. Chinese red paint made with cinnabar. The list goes on. I'm personally surprised they all lived as long as they did.
Ah, poor Anne C, gifted with the body of a woman, and not one of basically a little girl she (rather fortunately for her) couldn't get Henry's...spirit...up. I've heard modern reconstructionists claim she actually had a big nose and to that I say, "So what?" We also have to understand that frequently in art (especially coinage) noses were made much larger (almost comedically so) because large noses denoted wisdom and trustworthiness because...well, honestly I have no idea why, but they did. Holbein I do believe painted her accurately, mainly because he likely would've been beheaded otherwise. I think it's safe to say she was ironically the best off of all of Henry VIII's wives, despite dying young, and I think it really shows the strength of her character in being kind to Henry's children equally and trying to warn them not to leave Elizabeth in Katherine Parr's care. I agree with other commenters saying you should hear the German accounting of the story. It's a ride, and definitely worth the time.
I love Anne Cleves , her warm lovely & soft nature paid her back with a long live consider back then ! Thanks for your narrative. Greetings for California 😊
I think this queen is very under-rated. She's definitely the wisest of Henry VIII 's wives, possibly knowing how to handle him best. She actually thrived following her divorce. Being that monarch' "beloved sister" was much safer than being married to him.
Hi there, I have to suggest to you that you should research Anne of Cleves from the Germany. This story is not the truth, he dropped her for political reasons, not for the story you tell. Its just more fantastic than the truth
He married her for political reasons, but by the time Anne arrived in England the original political reason for the union had diminished but he could not get our of the marriage. She had the sense to agree to a divorce.

Life isn’t always about the time lived. in her case she lived a good life even though not particularly long
There was no treatment or cure for cancer back then, if you got it you usually died.
I don't how she conceived at the age of 43
It's nice to know that she still maintained a relationship with her former stepchildren.

Anne definitely knew the score with Henry. Wised up Women.
I was very surprised to see how much cancer there was in medieval times.
Cancer has been around for centuries. Just no one really knew what it was
I was surprised animals got cancer too.. humans however have always had cancer it just didn't have a name.

@@belladingdong3396 Exactly! They were smothered in mercury and lead back then. 😂
She's my favorite of all of them
Great info, @HerRemarkableHistory!
Anne was a smart cookie. Pragmatic.

Where do you listen to the German version?

One of Henry V111 wives (I don't know which one) had appendasitis for years, but she had to live through it, she must of been in agony
So. He's mad he catfished her and she didn't appreciate it.

My God that land is beautiful 😢
seems her "failed" marriage was a pretty good success from a particular point of view
