- The Luton DART (Direct Air-Rail Transit) is a brand new transit link that opened between Luton Airport and Luton Airport Parkway station in March 2023. In this video we take a look at this new link and take a full journey from Luton Airport Parkway station to Luton Airport's terminal.
Enjoy the video :)
The Google says that they can’t use the Oyster Card when they travel on the Luton Dart because it’s in outside of London
Thank you for clarifying this - I realise I’ve made a mistake in the video. Oyster cards cannot be used, but contactless payments cards can.
I noticed at Luton Airport Terminal station, the train actually went a little bit backwards. Also worth mentioning, the system is cable-hauled to allow for the relatively steepuphill part (I believe its 25º but I don’t know mich about it)
Yeah I noticed the thing with the train going backwards too - my guess is that it’s from the force on the cable of the train braking. Wow 25 degrees is a pretty steep incline - conventional trains would definitely run into issues climbing it.
The DART has some problems as it was done: 1. Very expensive. Most airports don't charge for such a service. 2. Relatively long walk and outside the building from the airport terminal to the DART station. WHY?? . Could be directly connected to the terminal. 3. Unnecessary big and confusing terminal buildings for such a small service. Long confusing walks to the trains on both ends. In conclusion - could be much better and cheaper.
I went on these this month and it was really good
I agree - it’s much better than the bus link which was there before!
@@ItsAllAboutTheJourney I just love everything bout Luton airport to be honest lol
It would be feasible to build a spur railway line from Luton to the airport ?
It’s definitely feasible - takes the stress off all the buses between Luton Airport Parkway and the airport (which were, as you can imagine, a massive hassle with tons of bags). The fact that it wasn’t an extension of the current railway line is interesting - perhaps this was due to width/height constraints on the route that could not be passed by typical heavy rail trains.
nice video can you do class 387 in your train sim game from kings lynn to london kings cross with a 12 coach 387 please?
Thank you! I’d definitely like to start making TS content again - this is definitely a possibility.
@@ItsAllAboutTheJourney ok cheers :)
Luton Dart? More, like, 'Luton CRAWL!' Stephenson's 'rocket' was faster than this!😂
IS IT FREE from luton airport parkway?
Nope, I believe it’s £4.50 one way for the ride. Ludicrously expensive!
@@ItsAllAboutTheJourney Jesus, I would rather take a half an hour walk than spend 4.50 for that 3 min ride,..
Bloody well should be. Rail costs in UK are ridiculously high
@@AsoloTV2310 I got a ticket to Luton airport from st pancras international via EMR and the dart was free that's what they said
The DART would have been included in the ticket price - you just wouldn’t have needed to buy a separate ticket.

Why could they not get someone to make the announcements with a British accent? It doesn't look good to foreign visitors when our own transit system is advising to hold ze handrails!
The announcements were actually recorded by local residents of Luton as part of a competition right here in the UK - and this voice was the winner. I’m quite pleased they didn’t choose an awful text-to-speech voice, which seem to be everywhere now. Unfortunately the sound quality of the speakers and the recording isn’t great so it sounds a bit strange.
