It didn’t actually take them 5 years to work on the song. It took them five years to decide they were actually ready to attempt the song. They had talked about it earlier in their career and thought it was too iconic of a song and were worried they wouldn’t be able to do it justice. As they grew mentally and vocally they decided to give it a try. So glad they did.
I think that's probably the case. They released it in 2017, so it was probably arranged and recorded in 2016, which was 5 years after they were formed as Pentatonix by adding Avi & Kevin to "The Trio". It was probably something they had been thinking about trying sometime from the beginning, but wanted to be sure they had the right concept before committing to doing it. They did a snippet of it in their "Evolution of Music" in 2013.
There's a snippet of "Bohemian Rhapsody" in their "Evolution of Music" video, which was from waaay back. So I bet the idea had been kicked around for a long time. But it was years before they felt they could do justice to the song as a whole.
@@bill.godwin-austen haha. I just wrote something very similar, even using some of the same words, before reading your reply. Great minds, or something like that.
@@mikegoodwin2386I'm very aware of the little snippet from evolution of music. That small part hardly compares to them feeling comfortable to do the whole song. In fact there was a livestream from 2014 or 2015 and ptx were asked if they would ever do it or if there was a song they'd never try. At the time Scott said they would never attempt bohemian Rhapsody just because it was too iconic and that's just a song you don't mess with. I guess they changed their mind over time.
@@PtxXtp I was not disagreeing with you. Just mentioning that they may have been thinking about it for some time but probably not actually practicing it or working on arrangements or whatever. . . . Adding to your comment, not debating it.
Almost. It’s about all of pentatonix sitting on the couch to record videos with an iPad to get their name out there after being dropped by the record label they had won from winning the sing off. The label didn’t think they could have any success with a cappella music so they dropped them right after they had won the show and moved to LA.. They decided to persue their career anyway on their with the little resources they had. Their apartments, a couch and an iPad.
Mitch puts his heart and soul into the song, but does so with the same apparent simple ease that Freddie Mercury did. There are many similarities between the two of them.
Remember for the live performance, this was their encore at the end of a long night of singing. That they could do this LIVE after all that effort is absolutely amazing.
Agree Jim plus I was privileged to see their live performance but it was in a football stadium and it still was almost as good as their official video performance.

I highly recommend their version of John Lennon's Imagine, it is probably the best version, other than the original, I've ever heard of the song. They don't just cover it, they make it their own.
Honestly I’m not a fan of John Lenon although I do appreciate his mission and all that…. But I absolutely adore PTX take on Imagine. On my playlist for years
@@edyta_soko I agree. I'm not a big fan of the original ( I kind of resent John and Yoko being preachy) but Pentatonix turned it into not only a rich and beautiful song but a sincere social commentary.

Yes! After listening to Pentatonix singing Gold, I had to listen to the original to realise that Mitch was replicating all the electronic sound effects.
Absolutely! It's one of their most dramatic upgrades. The skills they each bring to the table are on full display. And yet, they make it look effortless...
An electrical "sound" was added to Mitch's vocals on the guitar solo-Kevin said it once in an interview. But live he makes it sound very close to this.
Mitch has an amazing ear - there’s a video on his mimic skills. Saw an interview of somebody asking how he created this cover of the guitar solo, he states you just listen to a lot of guitars and make the sound. He definitely takes on vibe of those he covers - Freddie, Ariana, Rihanna, Lady Gaga come to mind.
Mitch can make all sorts of sounds. There’s a video where Mitch mimics the sound of a dry board marker. Kirstin had her leg in a cast for a few months but she didn’t let her stop performing. Notice that in their video , Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree, she remains stationary. Recommend their cover of Havana.
I agree with many others: Gold is a great next pick. The original is an overly produced heavy on synth sound and they replicate it with their mouths. Also, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. No words but won them a grammy!
The best researched and entertaining reaction I have ever watched for the best acapella group there is! Thank you! I would love to see your reaction to Pop Spring 2016, Gold, Sound of Silence, and Imagine and so many others, but I will stop there for now. Pop Spring 2016 has 3 original songs and their evolution of Michael Jackson arrangement performed live in concert at a musical festival in Japan. The sound quality is excellent and their original songs are sooo good. I hope you go deep into the PTX rabbit hole. It is all so amazing and your reactions are wonderful!
I saw PTX do this live. Fabulous. Mitch has a lot of anxiety. He's been bullied in his youth for his voice. He is a national treasure. I'm giggling like crazy. Just consider. You brought this up, PTX got their first Grammy on a $400 budget. They have rented an airport terminal now. The one PTX video that you should have medical protection for is the Aha! Singapore star Vista. That is the ultimate Mitch slap. Has been known to do serious damage. Watch the official video first, all of the way to the end. The Singapore video was filmed on a cell phone, it's definitely a fan video, and Avi does damage to at least one of the speakers, so the audio isn't as good. But you are not ready for the Singapore video yet. Wait. Pentaholics love to watch reactors who aren't, but seriously, it has done damage to reactors. Enjoy
@@garyco766 It's not recommended for audio quality. Noone watches a fan-cam for audio quality. You watch for a small approximation of the experience of seeing them on stage. You watch it for their facial expressions, their interactions with eachother and the fans, the changes they make in the songs, the mess ups, the emotions. If you want to hear a song with perfect audio you can just put on the studio version.
@@garyco766 because Mitch just goes off. He's admitted that he was jet lagged, drank 2 red bulls, and they hit during this song. Plus, Avi's note that pretty much blew the speaker is just phenomenal. I love the smile Mitch has at the end. He knows that he gave good show. I've seen them live, but this was better.
One thing to realize about Queen is that they refused to perform with any sort of backing track. When they did Bohemian Rhapsody live, they WALKED OFF THE STAGE for the opera section and just let the tape roll because they couldn't do it live. Then Freddie Mercury and the rest of the band got to come blazing in for the hard rock section, which was a glorious entrance because they were the masters of theatricality. Pentatonix doesn't have to leave the stage. I've seen them do it live on tour.
Another fun thing to think about is Mitch does on stage what it took Queen 3 different members to do. He does lead vocal, the guitar solo and the high note. Queen used Freddie, Brian and roger for those parts.
@@PtxXtp absolutely! Also, when the Freddie Mercury tribute concert came about in the early 90s, it took two guys to be Freddie in that song, and the band STILL had to walk offstage for the opera part.
Yep, you're officially Pentaholics now! Absolutely loved your reaction to the guitar solo. Someone once called it the 'Grassi Guitar', and how perfect is that? Anywhere you go will impress you, though I will say that although everyone recommends 'A-ha' live at the Star Vista in Singapore, I think that should be after two or three more reactions. Absolutely do the official video and then the live, as the live audio is patchy as it's fan made. It's such a legendary performance that you don't care though. All Pentaholics want reactors to do this one, but I think you need to work up to it. Mitch Slaps, Avi Kicks and Kevin KO'd all around. Imagine is a masterpiece. As is Sound of Silence. But their early stuff gets overlooked, and has gems such as 'Royals', and 'La La Latch'. If you don't think it's strange to do a Christmas song in the summer, their 'Carol of the Bells' is astonishing. The original music video has Avi, and their live from their 2021 Christmas special has Matt and is amazeballs. Sorry for the lengthy comment. I've really enjoyed your PTX reactions, and appreciate all the research you do! P.S. for Mitch ear candy, try his solo cover of Billie Eilish's 'Your Power'. It'll melt your ears, brains and hearts, and that's a promise.😍
Seriously, your reactions are incredible. Couple of things. Oh my, definitely Gold! Its very high on my favorites list - of course they have no "meh" performances. They win every round, as you noticed. The first time you can catch the wa-wa is in the Sing Off competition when they do a performance of "Let's Get it On." He also does a great wa-wa in their original song, "Can't Sleep Love." I suggest the Popspring 2016 version (second song, the video has three originals plus the Evolution of Michael Jackson live, filmed and recorded by MTV, so very high quality). I suggest that version because the official video doesn't have Mitch rapping, and that is a thing to behold. Speaking of which, he really does morf, as you said, for proof you can check out Superfruit's (Scott & Mitch) version of "Feeling Myself," Superfruit's cover of Defying Gravity (from Wicked), and Pentatonix's "Evolution of Rihanna," as well as Superfruit's "Rihanna's Anti Medley." I've never seen a reactor do the two Rihanna versions in one video, thar would be cool. Pentatonix and Superfruit also both did Lady Gaga Evolution/Medley, and another great combo reaction might be PTX's "Evolution of Ariana Grande" and their cover of "Problem" which Ariana loved and flipped over on her social media. Ok, that's enough from me, lol. Can't wait for you to continue!
Hi guys, love your PTX reactions. Speaking of Avi’s singing voice, I recommend that you check out their original song Light In The Hallway. Scott wrote it as a lullaby for his infant nephew, but he said as he was creating it he could only imagine Avi singing it. It’s a beautiful song [which I sing to my little granddaughter, she loves it too!]. Edited to add, perhaps for another season, also put Silent Night on your list. Avi arranged it, they sing it without mics in the hallway of a stone church, and it’s simply amazing. 🌟
The 2 of you are by far my Favorite PTX reactors. The time you both take to produce these reactions are perfect. Sound of Silence orginally done by Simon and Garfunkel is timeless. PTX again creates a perfect upgrade, better I feel than Disturbs rock cover. A must see....
(Songs with Avi) Imagine Gold Oh come all ye faithful (The created something Wicked than usual with an African Vibe that I totally love 😂) (Songs with Matt) Twelves of Christmas Sound of silence New Rules/ Are you that somebody (The Mashup you don't know you need, Matt and Kevin created a madness😂) Evolution of Ariana Grande. Havana (Kelvin imitates a trumpet) Can you feel the love tonight. Since you like BTS, check out their mashup of Dynamite and Butter. You'll get Eargasm that will leave your ears tingling with the melody for a long time.
Mary did you know? Cheerleader & can’t hold us, definitely honorable mention only cause they’re Christmas songs but little drummer boy and carol of the bells. Also, they won an award for a song that has no lyrics!! Dance of the sugar plum fairy. All are ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL!!!
Terrific reaction, as always! Love your in-depth preamble. "Gold" must be next! A completely live version of a totally over-produced original. Pentatonix at their finest.
We told you. :) I can't thank you guys enough for doing this song. So many levels of performance here. The Prayer, 90's Dance Medley and Imagine are all PTX upgrades. Much love guys!
This is the best music reaction I have ever heard. You brought us full circle. I really appreciate your approach to making us more informed about what we are hearing as well as giving really meaningful observations. Thank you!
Gold is pure Mitch magic, it’s perfection, you thought his electric guitar solo was incredible in this? Well his whole synth like vocals on that is out of this world
Great reaction! I've heard the 5 years thing, too, but only that it took them 5 years to feel like they were ready to do it as a group. They spent a lot of those first few years learning how to make good videos, and this one took all their skills in planning, arranging and singing to do this classic rock piece justice. BTW, a lot of those early videos were done with the 5 of them sitting on a couch, and the remote-control couch in this one is a tribute to that history.
Queen (The Who, Sweet and so on)...you´re just to young! It takes time to go through ALL the fantastic music we humans have been and are making. I´m close to 60 yrs now and STRUGGLING to keep up with todays music AND having time to listen to my "old" favourites.
To appreciate Avi Kaplan's amazing voice, check out his solo works, Change on the Rise, Otherside, and Aberdeen. He also did a video with Home Free, which is a cover of Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire.
Loved this reaction and analysis I think you’ll both like the 90’s song medley it’s amazing There’s so many songs that I’d love them to do a full version of from the medley There’s a fun smaller clip you could enjoy /add on to the end of a reaction The one of Avi blowing up their speaker with his deep bass voice If I remember right the song was hit the road jack
17:43 Sounds like you’re on your way to a case of PTXD. It’s quite comfortable to live with, though. From the Mitch slaps, to the Avi gut wrenches, from K. O. KO’ing with the kicks, to the constant chills of the harmonics at the top end, and even Scott throwing in some shell shocks, from covering Avi’s low end while Avi takes lead (like Hallelujah), or soaring higher than Mitch (in Superfruit’s rendition of Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked, but Mitch slaps back after that, arguably the highest Mitch slap I’ve taken on the chin, at least 50-100 times by now this last month). PTXD is no joke, but it is my favorite ailment XD
This video always gets me choked up because I am so flipping proud of them - as if I am like a mom figure to them. Which I’m not…but still… PTX for life!
What always surprises me is when we are listening to a live performance recorded on someone’s phone it still sounds so amazing. Obviously, the studio version is better but the talent it takes to do it live is astounding.
Hey there Jared and Jordan, I am new to your channel. I want to introduce you both to another a cappella group, their name is Home Free. The first song I would LOVE for you to react to is : " Ring of Fire" and get ready to be blown away by Tim their bass and Avi from Pentatonix, their bass... Thank You so much and I know you will love them...
All the Pentatonix stuff will blow you away. Aha Singapore is a live performance, it’s unfiltered zero production and I’m telling you it’s INSANE. Avi and Mitch are so good.
This was literally my favourite reaction from this video. The way you both kind of jumped when you heard Mitch doing the guitar was hilarious 😂. You really really need to check out The Sound of Silence soon or Can you feel the love Tonight
Literally my childhood. My mother loved Queen. I loved the original song and I love Pentatonix version as well. Also, I think this is the last song they all did together before Avi left the group so this song is a bit bittersweet for me.
You will be gobsmaked again I assure you. It will be interesting to hear your analysis. Crisp, factual and on the money looking forward to watching/listening it with you both. Greetings from Manchester UK
So enjoyable to watch your videos. You reactions bust me up at the performances. I would love to see you do a reaction to the a cappella group, Voctave. They are a 13 member group that doesn't use a beat boxer, but all things are done vocally. Their arrangements are by Jayme Ray, who writes the parts for the specific vocalists. Most have worked for Voices of Liberty at Disney and have incredible voices and ranges. You won't be sorry about any of their videos. They are, in my opinion, the best a cappella group around.
Thanks, I loved this reaction! I agree with everything you said about their performance, it’s absolutely amazing! They will one day be recognized as the best acapella group ever. Please, do Gold next! 😊
Amazing reaction, you guys should really react to their cover of “The Prayer” they sound so angelic and beautiful absolutely amazing and the high notes they hit are crazy.
The comment about PTX taking 5 years to do the BoRhap cover refers to the fact they did a snippet of the song as part of their Evolution of Music medley in 2013 but didn't feel confident enough in their a cappella vocal skills to do the full song till 2017. Technically, that's only 4 years but maybe it was closer to 5 from the time they first thought about covering BoRhap.
To show you the amount of detail that Pentatonix can put into a song and video: at the end of the "head-banging" section, when the Trio falls onto the couch, that is an homage to the Queen album cover photograph for Sheer Heart Attack. The 4 shooting stars during the 2nd Grassi Guitar solo towards the end was a tribute to both the 4 members of Queen, and specifically to Brian May, who now has a doctorate in Astrophysics. I would suggest either the Popspring 2016 performance if you want to see them do a live performance of several original songs and an "Evolution of Michael Jackson" tribute/medley, or The Prayer for something fairly recent and if you're willing to be Mitch-slapped (again!).
I'm telling you, you both need to listen to their version of Sound of Silence! It is my favorite upgrade they've done. It entails Kristen, Mitch, Scott, Kevin, and Matt, he's their newest bass singer, and he's very talented!!!! must listen to next!
Your reactions are fantastic. Like I said the last time, you need to do Imagine. You will experience their “wall of sound” that will blow your mind. Keep the tissues within arms reach.

Absolutely need to do the prayer next. You’ll get a whole new level of Mitch slapped.
PTX’s “Mary did you know?” Is my favorite of theirs. So good!
Their live stuff from the Hollywood bowl in 2022 is even better.
Enjoy
I never understand why this gets recommended so much. The audio quality is bad enough to basically ruin it.
@@heidifruchtl354 sure, he goes off, but the sound quality is so bad it doesn't even sound that good.
@@garyco766 how it actually sounds isn't the point. The point is, he did that. and thanks to that fan the rest of us get .02 experience of it.

Yes, Popspring performance 2016 I love all those songs and best live.
Gold !!
Oh yes - Gold, but please see the original first, just so you can see the magiic of PTX!
Agree, Popspring is a must - although you've already had your first taste of PTX live!
I love your reactions guys. I will recommend their 'Prayer'. Gosh you guy will Scott kicked.
Brilliant! Avi & Kevin are the MVPs in this one for me 🤯🔥❤️🙌
You have to listen to the 90's melody!!! Really brings you back and coming from the 90's it puts me in a happy place! You will not be disappointed!!
My first live! Yay! Super thrilled to see more of your reactions to PTX. Keep them coming guys!
Ohhh yeah Home Free also does this song too... ❤️❤️
I second this.
I would like to give a shout out to thery original songs.
"Sing" and "Love again" is som og my favorit songs.❤️
Wonderful reaction! You guys get it! You get them! The way they live, breathe and respect music is a huge part of how good they are!
Queen, and this song specifically, was absolutely massive.
Just one more interesting note the shooting stars were a tribute to the four origianl members of Queen.
PENTATONIX doesn’t COVER they REINVENT!!!
(Songs with Avi)
Imagine
Gold
Oh come all ye faithful (The created something Wicked than usual with an African Vibe that I totally love 😂)
(Songs with Matt)
Twelves of Christmas
Sound of silence
New Rules/ Are you that somebody (The Mashup you don't know you need, Matt and Kevin created a madness😂)
Evolution of Ariana Grande.
Havana (Kelvin imitates a trumpet)
Can you feel the love tonight.
I love these guys analyses....spot on!
I am in the queue to watch this reaction. Oh boy.......this will be fun,
What an incredible rendition of the original! Just blown away! Their vocals are just out of this world!
Loved this reaction and analysis
I think you’ll both like the 90’s song medley it’s amazing
There’s so many songs that I’d love them to do a full version of from the medley
There’s a fun smaller clip you could enjoy /add on to the end of a reaction
The one of Avi blowing up their speaker with his deep bass voice
If I remember right the song was hit the road jack
Also you guys have to review The Sound of Silence by this Pentatonix , you will not be disappointed!!!!
GOLD!!!!!!! Please
Love, Love The Sound Of Silence !
Loved watching your reaction! Looking forward to more PTX.
good job boys. If you havent done it yet you MUST see AHA! Live in Singapore.
Such a wonderful performance.
Best analysis and research in the ‘reaction video’ universe!
Thanks!! Loved that you did the video and the live version!!! You guys rock!
Pentatonix took Bohemian Rhapsody into orbit and was mind-blowing.
I would like to see The Sound of Silence. That way you can see a little bit of Matt. Great Reaction. 👍
Yes I need a reaction to can you feel the love tonight!! Amazing upgrade to the song!!!
They don't do covers... They do upgrades!
Literally my childhood. My mother loved Queen. I loved the original song and I love Pentatonix version as well. Also, I think this is the last song they all did together before Avi left the group so this song is a bit bittersweet for me.
Second to last. The last one was "I can't help help falling in love with you" ☺️.
Sound of Silence and When the Party is Over, are SO incredible!
Love your reactions and next I think you should definitely do "Mary did you know" or "the prayer" both have such astounding vocals that you will love.
PLEASE!!!!! React to The Sound of Silence from Pentatonix next!! I love the detail you guys go into. ♥️
Thanks, I loved this reaction! I agree with everything you said about their performance, it’s absolutely amazing! They will one day be recognized as the best acapella group ever. Please, do Gold next! 😊
Guitar solo is a Mitch slap from hell
Amazing reaction, you guys should really react to their cover of “The Prayer” they sound so angelic and beautiful absolutely amazing and the high notes they hit are crazy.
No matter which "first reaction" of any Pentatonix on any youbetube channel. everyone's heart melts when Mitch throttles up...
Their original catalog is another amazing branch to take. I'd start with 'Love Again' and 'Run to You' for originals.
"Blinding lights" is another fabulous one.
Legends! Woo boo Pentatonix is getting Starin the Hollywood Walk of Fame!
It's so cool that you decided to watch a live performance too
I'm telling you, you both need to listen to their version of Sound of Silence! It is my favorite upgrade they've done. It entails Kristen, Mitch, Scott, Kevin, and Matt, he's their newest bass singer, and he's very talented!!!! must listen to next!
Kirstin
Your reaction to this was SO MUCH FUN TO WATCH! 🙌🔥🙌🔥
Your reactions are fantastic. Like I said the last time, you need to do Imagine. You will experience their “wall of sound” that will blow your mind. Keep the tissues within arms reach.
“Sound of Silence “ is really really good and “Mary did you Know” also both are absolute 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👀👀👀👀👀
