    When I started arboriculture in the '80s I came from a forestry background. It took me a while to learn to think the arbor way. So a lot of my questions were ridiculed and criticized. And now, several things I wanted to know about have come true, including suspenders, more rings on the saddle, top handle saws made to receive the lanyard, mountaineer type gear for climbing, and smaller hand saws to take up with you into the tree. SO! I appreciate all that you teach us, including what modern climbing gear is like.

      I too was a later 70’s and 80’s tree boy… now at 51 after some serious injuries…catching a widowmaker and some other issues I’m thinking about gearing up only to keep myself in a place where I can assist an elderly or broke neighbor with a tree that needs to be brought down… I think these look very interesting and I’m definitely considering the extra large size as I’m a bigger guy who really needs to be working in the outdoor gym so that he’s not an even bigger guy!!! At 51 after a couple of pretty serious smashes I’ve definitely learned a few things and number one is that you better learn to laugh at yourself and that life’s serious enough at times so learning to laugh and love everyone and everything around you and just enjoy still being here and being able to have a great day doing something that you love is totally where it’s at… a couple of guys who have some UA-cam followers and what some consider UA-cam fame are just regular dudes still getting up every morning and going to work in the trees… the jealousy,negativity, and negative shots and drama are just totally uncool and unnecessary… you’re only really bringing a negative wave or light into your own energy… don’t hate on someone who’s spent the hours building something up that you haven’t…if you want to be like that guy then barrow a page from his playbook and put in your hours… August has been doing his videos and pics for years as an attempt to reinspire his own passion’s for doing tree work… you should be embracing a fellow tree monkey and not trying to tear someone down to temporarily feel better about yourself…. There’s a big tribe of like minded people who have a lot more to gain from the sharing of information and camaraderie then from a bunch of negativity… we all have to know by now that it’s a team effort! Every tree crew is a just another difunctional family with that one or two or three crazy uncles in our case! All tree guys are 1/2 crazy or we’d have never fallen in love with this crazy carrier, right? LMFFAO! Life is serious enough, learn to dance and laugh a little more!!! Be extremely grateful every morning when your eyes open up again!!!

    Yes sir - I do love the monkey beaver belt now I am dialled in - so comfy after years of my old tech seat style saddle.
    like August I wear my leg loops up high.
    Really appreciate all the gear storage options and the ability to adjust the bridge length on the fly as I climb as demonstrated by Samurai J0e,
    I went with a shoulder harness setup and have not had my harness dragged off my hips since with the monkey beaver belt/shoulder strap combo by the big saws.
    that in its self makes me very grateful to August J0e and New Tribe .
    (its always difficult as a slim climber with no hips to keep a climbing harness in position)
    and my hip chaffing issues have practically vanished :)'
    Ben.

    I'm glad I came back and looked at this video again a year or so after buying my Monkey Beaver belt... (as well as the other one done later by the chip piles where Joe and August explain in more detail how to adjust and dial it in.) Way to go, and keep up the good work, and Merry Christmas!

    All I've used is a seat saddle and this was informative to me as a somewhat new "tree" climber. As I have talked about I'm a telephone lineman and have tinkered with the tree side over the years and am really trying to move over to tree work . Love the videos wish I was close to I 80 so I could meet yall on your road grip. Be safe.

    I used mine for the first time today! Just a quick pruning of lower branches on a dead tree that is coming down soon. I love it! I used the clip above the chainsaw tether to hang my little battery saw. It was so smooth it was almost instinctive! No twisting, so the clip is always oriented right. I've been using a saddle with Much. Fewer. Features! And I felt like I'd been given a brief glimpse of Heaven! (Maybe I'm getting carried away a bit, but I really love this saddle!) Thanks AH! You the man!

    Now that I have watched this video I'm even more excited to get my new harness!! I can't wait!!! I didn't even realize that the adjustable bridge would be better for SRT also....the ability to make it the bridge shorter... I tend to pinch my fingers with the rope wrench on long accents when rope walking because my bridge is a little long. Now I won't have that prob anymore. Awesome!

    what the name of the mechanical ropegrab on bridge?

  • @thexmanjdd
    @thexmanjdd 7 років тому +5

    Good informative and real video. Liked it a lot. Adjustable bridge makes sense to add. Yeah, as soon as you said the "higher ups, safety people, don't want mechanical adjuster on the bridge, I immediately thought of my ART positioner on my lanyard that is used as a lifeline during climbing line repositioning, or double lanyard spiking up near limbless straight trees. Maybe it's about falls and generated possible forces, but my ART spiderjacks are similar, right? I like this saddle. I would have assumed the rear gear D's could be life support; seems like a rescuer would want to connect to them and lower a limp body maybe. So that was news to me. Might be good to add "not life-support" to them if they don't already say that . Anyway, looks like a well thought out saddle. I like the wide leg pads, looks like I might be able to handle those individual leg loops since they are wide; I can't handle thin ones like on treemotion and many others. ha ha, looks like you scolded yourself in your head at 20:12 for talking to much, like; "Oh crap, I talked too much". It wasn't too much, it was good.

    • @AugustHunicke
      @AugustHunicke  7 років тому

      Yeah, good idea on the D rings for cargo saying "non life-support" (although they would hold) 😬
      Yes not using a rope grab for primary support ends up getting back to the "mucky muck's" not wanting a device on your primary line that pinches it. But, it is not used on a single line since the bridge goes down to two connection points on the harness. Which brings me to another argument, if you fell from far enough up with enough dynamic force to break that bridge by pinching it, you will have wished you had fallen to the ground. The ground will punch you with a bigger fist, thus greater dispersion of force than the punch you would get from only the places the belt attaches to your body..
      Is ART positioner considered a rope grab like the yoke and climb rite-mini? I don't know, but I know that it has more trouble with pitch, has more complicated moving parts and is also a lot more expensive.

    • @hopkinstreeexperts759
      @hopkinstreeexperts759 7 років тому

      Now, I'm fairly new to the climbing culture, I've been a ground guy on-off for five years, but in my experience so far climbing I've found the prussik knot to be the cheap alternative to mech adjustables. I'm starting out real oldschool though, I've got a nice set of 50 year old buckingham spurs and a leather body belt, but they do the trick. So bottom line my thought is that you could use a prussik on your bridge, maybe you've thought of that? maybe it makes OSHA piss and moan, idk. It's just an idea that came to mind, thought I'd share.

    • @AugustHunicke
      @AugustHunicke  7 років тому

      +3lusive thanks, I covered that concept in this video. Hitch actuates too easily or vice versa gets to gummed up with pitch to be useful.
      No safety concerns with it though. Just frustrating to use.

    • @hopkinstreeexperts759
      @hopkinstreeexperts759 7 років тому

      I feel you on that one, once my clientele picks up I plan to upgrade, too many times have i wrestled with it on my flip line, but i wouldn't imagine a bridge to get gummed up much, but I can see how its too fluid when its clean.

    • @AugustHunicke
      @AugustHunicke  7 років тому

      +3lusive travel of the ring/biner on the bridge actuates the top of the hitch. Not so with mechanical rope grab. Additionally, pitch is a huge consideration in my part in the world.

    Love the versatility, Q. 1 would an extra large saddle say 38-46 be possible in the future?Size wise, I use the petzl sequoia with a adjustable bridge, I like it but would like to try something different? Q.2 does joe use the sliding rings on his lanyard or do they help the adjustability of the bridge? August your passion for this industry moving forward and enjoying the work you do has been inspirational. As a newbee I'm thankful for those willing to share their knowledge, success and even their failures. Zero hate. Thinking about buying this saddle, and love your work and your videos,. But If you have an adjustable rope bridge, and you also have a climbing line, and a flip line, now you have three tails you have to deal with. I think that would drive me nuts, personally. The legs loops look really good, loving the design, loving the idea behind the adjustable bridge also could you get around the problem of the adjusting bridge by putting a ring straight from the belt so that the bridge would run through in front of the adjuster, then if the adjuster failed for any reason the ring would catch?

      August, any updated thoughts you can share on this? Have you guys come up with a different way of routing the bridge through the Yoke and main attachment point, making a backup/failsafe as I believe Conan Tree Connon was saying above? Full disclosure, I'm not into the nay-saying and nitpicking, but like to get all the input available from experienced guys like you so I can make my own less-experienced judgement calls. Sometimes that's hard on the internet because guys don't always want to throw out info that's going to get the bees riled up.

    What are the "extra" rings intended for on the inside area of the adjustable bridge? There's one between the Yoke adjuster and the SwivaEye, and another between the SwivaEye and the static end of the rope bridge.

      @@kellerhopkins3184 I've since learned and utilized similar items on my MB harness. They're just attachment rings for using more than one point of attachment/tie-in while in the tree. On my bridge I have a Rock Exotica Large swivel I use for my main system (Rope Wrench with VT) , as well as a Rock Exotica Swiva-eye carabiner, and a plain ring. I like to have choices ready to go. They're a little jingly when walking around but don't bother me any in the tree.

    Love your vids bro, think the mechanical grab on primary tie in point is enforced because those grabs accenders etc tend to cut modern rope at around 5000lbs..those forces wouldn't normally be experienced on A lanyard from a fall or normal use so "they" OK it.. I guess I wouldn't be hip on a 20ft fall with a rope grab between me and the ground.. But adjustable "tied" system yes all day..wondering if your belt suspenders are or will be life support also? Please keep on with what you do so beautifully well! PS will prob purchase a belt from you for my son.. Thx Po

    QUESTION please.... I'm a new climber and a little overweight. --- recently I got a quick chance to try out the Monkey Beaver saddle... and it was uncomfortable because hanging from it I was at a *horizontal* angle (i.e. 45 degrees or so)....Is this an easy adjustment to orient oneself more *vertically* when hanging in the Monkey Beaver saddle?
    THANKS!
    P.S. I have sent New Tribe, TreeStuff, and WesSpur this same question and have not received an answer....

    • @AugustHunicke
      @AugustHunicke  7 років тому +2

      Robert Wood it's a question that can only be ironed out by experience. You must find your way/style by practicing work positioning a lot. You are likely fighting things which is common when new, you will get comfortable in many different positions with time. The question likely goes unanswered by some because it doesn't have a quick pat answer in my opinion.

Reading stats and reports by others do not give you the knowledge needed to dictate what works and is safe with proper usage and what is safe, idiot proof, and a PITA to use.

    Any problems having this sent to Japan? I was going to buy a different harness, but I like what you say and would prefer to buy from a small outfit opposed to a large company.

    Is this climbing belt for total beginners doing very basic climbing?
    e.g. are there any downsides to the belt from a total beginners point of view? Thanks!
    Really appreciated those personal comments at the end :)

      Robert Wood no downside. No reason not to start with a great belt.

    Seeing as they don't sell the Yoke separate couldn't a guy just buy the 11mm lanyard without hardware cut off the ends and tie the appropriate knots and use the rope from the lanyard as a bridge? I have a Tree motion and never replaced the bridge so don't know what size it is.

    Always going to be haters lol. Some people are just miserable. Good thing is that's a small majority. Looking forward to trying this out. I have a tree motion and put my microcrab after my d plate and between my termination knot. Maybe that's a way to get around the life support issue.

    Hey August,
    I know it’s a long shot. But just a bloke in Australia trying to make my work life more productive post hip surgery as a result of my Exploits. (No bad fall just too much workload for my body).
    Could you flick me some contacts as that harness looks badass.
    Also on a different note. Working in QLD is Rubbish, could you provide some testing on heat happy attire.
    Lots of love to the family,
    Spanks James the climber.

    Im looking into buying a new harness with a double bridge ( or double bridge adaptable/capable) hence watching harness vids. WesSpur has a great presentation of the equipments evolution, well worth a watch. I would love one of these MB’s but by the time Her Majesty’s Customs have reamed me I could nearly buy two of the competition.....it does look very logical and practical in its design.... maybe one day if you get a British distributor on board......double bridge would enable either long n short config but do you really want to be pulling heavily on your shoulders to ascend these days? Maybe OK for the younger guys but not me.SRT to climb easier and hang a DRT setup off your belt to setup and work the canopy seems to be the best and most energy saving option Ive learned and over here satisfies the need to put a second rope in the tree fairly quickly.....albeit not from the ground....

    On the subject of mechanical adjustable bridges, Richard Mumford figured out a way to do it and keep the bridge rope going through the rigging plate with the stopper knot at the end. He uses CT RollNLock wire-tied to the rigging plate. Here is the video where he brake tests it: ua-cam.com/video/82vzebgHOHY/v-deo.html

    Late to the party but wanted to throw in my 2 cents. A rope grab mechanical with a robustly designed locking mechanism that only actuates when the device is cammed would be ideal. Maybe higher-ups would see that as more appropriate for primary so distinctive actions are needed to adjust the bridge (assuming you work position with the device locked). I completely agree with you guys that if we trust them on our lanyards as the only point of attachment then we already use it as a primary. Rope grab fails when working to a new TIP? Same consequence in either application. Less politics, more innovation for the folks using this stuff please! Don't know when that will happen, but it only holds back everyone involved until a stigma is overturned.

      TreeSavage Wedoitmjr I was so excited about my MCRS and then when I got it I was kind of let down. I mean, astronomically better then my old seat style saddle, but not all it was made out to be. Maybe I just haven't dialed it in? But I totally agree with what August is saying, I put it on and it grabs everything as I lift it up. My pants get grabbed and bunch up and my shirts and sweater, gets crammed into sections and it's not quick or comfy. And it's easy to misalign the leg loops. Bonner had a video promoting it and I was sold, but when it comes down to it, it has a lot of downfalls. This saddle looks like its comfortable and quick to put on/take off. Hope someone I know will get one so I can try it out, but I think for now I'll make the best of the MCRS that I have

    It's a nice saddle but I do not see why it costs so much. I feel the same way about my Petzl Seqouia SRT but at least it has a main point / belay loop which no other harness that i know of has. Lower the cost by at least a hundred bucks and i would consider buying one.
