  • Found this old Scotts drop spreader on the curb last Summer, haven't used it yet but looks like everything is still working. Model 35-3 appears to be made in the 1963-64 time frame from what I could find online. If anyone knows more about these feel free to comment. A cool curb find (as I say "cool" in this video about 100 times)

Great find! I've got one very similar from the mid 70's they're a lot better than the plastic ones they make today.

Thanks Alan, they are definitely built to last. Whenever I buy my own house down the road (I'm renting now) I will put it to good use!

I was in Salvation Army and they had one for $3.99! It looks so good, it wasn't til I noticed the bicycle-type hand grips that I figgered it was really old. What a beast! I was googling for a manual(didn't find one, guess I'll have to calculate the setting by experiment) and came across your video. Also, found 1 on ebay asking $75 and another $122.57! Thanks for the excellent video.

Scotts has an online settings tool:
      www.scotts.com/en-us/spreader
The Scotts metal hopper drop-spreaders like the one in the video are the same as the model PF-1 sold in later years.
After scrolling down to PF-1, enter the barcode of the particular Scotts product you wish to apply and the online tool will give you the proper setting.
IMPORTANT: in order to make these discontinued metal Scotts spreaders last a long time, wash the outside and inside of the spreader with a garden hose and nozzle after every use. Set the dial at the highest number and wash the spreader with the hopper in the open and closed positions. After you are finished washing it off, leave the hopper open, place the spreader face down (so the bottom of the hopper faces skyward) and let it dry overnight. Once it is dry, spray WD-40 on along the holes at bottom of the spreader (both inside and outside) and then open and close the hopper a few times. This will minimize rusting of the bottom of the hopper. If you do not do this, the rust will get so bad that the openings at the bottom of the hopper will get progressively larger over time and the number settings will no longer be accurate.
NEVER keep fertilizer or other products in the hopper when the spread is not in use. Doing this will rust out the hopper in very short order.

I have this exact spreader - and I have no clue how to set it for my fertilizer, weed killer that I just bought. I'm glad you showed this video because my ruler thing is rusted so I can't read it. If you could, I'd like to ask you a few questions about it.

Thanks for watching! I've actually never used this spreader in the yard but could try and help out. Ruler will regulate how much gets spread when you pull the lever.

We have one with the same model number 35-3 The ruler thing when you look on the left side is for when you want to distribute smaller amounts of seed, fertilizer or lawn soil conditioners like Magi-Cal Since this model only goes to 2 and the bag of Magi-Cal as an example says for Scotts 1 1/2 we set it at 2 or so. For seeds, we set it around 14 which is to the right. Works like a champ but right now we have a stuck wheel, put WD-40 on it to sit overnight and hoping it works. If it does not we need to know if parts are available. The wheels are attached with a cotter pin. If anyone has ever removed the wheels off of this and knows what replacement parts might be needed (size, types etc.) that would be great. Thanks!

@@jamesgideon5761 thanks James. Was given one a few years back and am finally using it. Did not know the age of it but mine has been sheltered well and is in decent condition. Will be spreading mole repellent tonight before it rains. Your info about adjusting it helped.

Great find. I have 3 of them. One is twice the size and a tow behind. They all came from our family garden center we sold in 1971. I didn't realize they were from EARLY 60s but now that makes sense. Just need to figure out how to convert old settings.

Thank you, haven't used it yet but the fact that it's all metal and all there in this condition makes it nice, especially after I researched about how old it is!

6/18/22 UPDATE: The Scotts US website no longer has the online spreader settings "widget" but it is still available on the Scotts Canada website:
      www.scotts.com/en-ca/spreader
As I posted earlier, use the settings listed for PF-1 for your metal Scotts drop spreader. Also, after using your spreader for the first few times, you may find out that you need to dial it back slightly - my experience is typically .5 to .75 lower than what is listed on the website widget.

@@stashorama I have a 35-1 I got at a pawn shop 3 years ago for 5 bucks and it's in excellent shape. Just been using it to spread fertilizer in the garden but now I know how to set it so can use it on the lawn. Thanks for the info!!!!

@@gleason5804 My father had one like this (from the 60's) that my brother still uses after dad passed. Mine is newer from the 80's. On the bags of Scotts Fertilizer, it still has the setting for a Scotts drop spreader, and I don't believe a conversion is needed. I keep up my spreader the same way my father did. With fertilizer being highly corrosive, it is important to hose fertilizer dust off when done. Towel dry as much as possible, then leave in the sun to air dry the rest. Lastly, Spray the tine, axels, seams with WD40 to prevent rust. let sit for a day and wipe off excess. Bent tines can easily be bent back with a pliers. Enjoy it for years to come, and be the envy of the neighborhood.....

If memory serves setting for Scotts fertilizer was 5.5 to 6.5. seed was around 11 to 14. a 20 lb bag of Scotts was said to do 5000 sq ft w/ approx 1lb of nitro per 1k there about . Im fertilizing today. I will start with setting 3 for a for a 2 pass per 1k

@@miketonon7946 I set Scotts metal PF1 drop spreader on 3. Scotts fertilizer 30-0-0. I had 14lbs.I covered 5K lawn . I actually had some fertilizer left which I put in a Scotts hand held and walked over the lawn again. Setting 5 to 6 with Scotts should be about correct for a single application but would recommend setting at 3 with opposing passes so stripes dont happen .
