You were very lucky to have that experience from your instructor. I have been reviewing your content for a while now. As a practitioner of Shorin Ryu from when Hanshi Shugaru Nakazato time frame, many applications were not taught. I am 48 and have worked in jails and mental health my entire adult life. I also have found the benefit of my Karate experience after seeking applicable bunki from additional training. My assistant instructors and I appreciate your sacrifices as well as those who have assisted you over the years to provide this content.

I used to watch your crate culture videos. I like to work bunkia although my school doesn't spend much time on them.

This "Should" be basic Common Sense. I dont know why this is supposed to be some sort of revolutionary conclusion?! Forms are mainly for:
    1. Maintaining the Combat Technology, over a long span of time
    2. Revealing some principle examples, of Operations
    3. Developing Skills, and Attributes, through repetition. Timing, Body Unity, Speed / Acceleration, Footwork... and more
    4. A way for a Teacher to see and assess a students relative skill and attribute levels. If they have timing or coordination issues, its visually apparent from bad form
But the forms are merely the "Beginning". They are not meant to represent every aspect of actual combat... nor are they supposed to be the Only thing to develop various skills and attributes.
If you want to maximize your acceleration, for example... you need to do specific acceleration drills / exercises. If you want to gain greater punching power... you need to, for example... punch a wall mounted sandbag, or Makiwara board... in addition to Pushups, and many other exercises and methods. You cant merely do the form, to be a masterclass level Puncher / Kicker.
Not only that... but its literally impossible to provide every single Example of Combat application... in forms. There are so many things possible... that it would make the forms like 5 hours long... and they still might not account for every actual possibility. This is why you teach the Principles of Operations / Functions.. not just singular techniques / responses. Unless you understand the mechanics and reasons why a certain things works, and is used... you may not be able to understand how to use these tools, for multiple different use / situational cases.
And Of course... Learning and Mastering forms... isnt the same as actual combat experience. You need to actually spar / fight... to develop fighting/combat level experience. The closer you are to replicating actual combat... rather than sport play / games... the more realistic that your combat abilities, may become.
Thats actually one reason why I take issue with arts like BJJ... because they are generally not striking, while performing their Grappling Play. They are not allowing the simulated striking / grasping of the Nuts. The poking of the eyes. The crushing grip on the adams apple. Ive seen two UFC fighters end up in a "69" positions... and it was completely disgusting, and embarrassing... that two fighters end up like this... and both accept that level of stupidity and non-realism... in the name (and rules) of a sportized game. Its was a complete and utter Disgrace to the Martial Arts... as well as a Disgrace to the actual fighters.
Furthermore... Why are people mass accepting BJJ over actual Jujitsu ?! From what I can tell... all the Gracies did, was to remove the striking from Jujitsu, and further Water the system down... and then slap their own name over it. They they made all of these FALSE claims to have been fighting various "MASTERS"... and anyone with any depth of martial arts experience, could EASILY see that NONE of these Fighters, were anywhere near MasterClass level fighters. In fact, it was very clear, they were all "Cherry Picked" , Inept / Clueless. The Gracies never wanted to accept a fight against an ACTUAL Masterclass level fighter... because they are not stupid. They know the TRUE dangers of such a thing... which is why they avoided it, at all cost. Yet they teach others to do extremely Risky Entry tactics... that could easily get them "Ended".
Dont get me wrong... Grappling has its uses.. especially when you are trying not to harm someone. However, its generally NOT what you would use, in a serious combat situation. Most especially if there were more than one attacker involved.
Finally... if you want to know more about functional Karate... seek out the Oldest Sources, that likely have the least potential corruptions. From what Ive seen, that appears to be in small remote schools, in Okinawa. That... and the ROOT of all Karate, which I believe is from White Crane Kung Fu. According to what Ive read.. is that traveling Japanese men, were walking though Ancient China... and saw the Chinese practicing White Crane... and the Japanese asked if they could learn it as well.
Its likely not known how long these Japanese spend learning this art... and if the Chinese taught them everything... without holding back certain key things from them. But eventually the Japanese men returned to Japan... and shared this technology. They originally called it "China Hand". However, over time... they decided to rename it to "Open Hand", which is basically what "Karate" translates into.
The main issue.. with almost ALL arts... is that as we entered the Industrial Era... the need for combat, was greatly diminished. We also had to work modern jobs... and so there was not as much time (nor energy) to train hardcore in the combat arts. The motivation to train hardcore, was also largely removed... because you rarely, if ever, needed to use this technology, to survive. Eventually, standards dropped, in favor of retaining more modern / lazy students. And due to insurance and safety issues... Barefist sparring was largely eliminated.. as well as tons of Rules added, that sportized these arts. In addition, many Elite's in Power and Control.. dont want the Slave Class, to have high level combat technology... and they have likely intentionally corrupted countless martial arts on purpose. As such, do not expect to find the full Truth in any ONE Source. At best, you might find various rare knowledge, spread across many different arts, and or different schools / branch lineages.

Im going to add... that there is this Belief that anything Older... has to be "Inferior". Does 1 + 1 still Equal 2 ? Math has not changed in thousands of years... nor will it ever change. Its the same of Physics. And unless humans grow two more limbs... every combat technology that was discovered, developed, and mastered... over 1000 years ago... should still function the exact same way today... as it did back then. The same Forearm deflection that they developed 1500 years ago... still works the exact same... today (so long as you have mastered, and applied it correctly). Again... this is down to basic Physics / Mass Energy, Leverage, Gravity, Momentum ...etc. Once you learn to tie your techniques to the physics principles behind it all... you will be able to utilize them in all sorts of manors that you were never "Taught".
Anyway... its quite the Opposite today. Fighters are doing things that are far more Risky / Dangerous... which is why boxers, for example... get hit like +50 times in a single round. Such methods were eliminated from the elder combat arts, very early on... because of the various weaknesses, and defensive Openings that they created, which resulted in Crippling, or Lethal counters.
So again... if you want to know the deepest of truths... Look as far back as you possible can. Maybe even travel to some remote mountain house, in China. You are more likely to rediscover, nearly Lost technology... that is far superior, to the Degraded modern arts, sportized methods. Its not Just about missing weapons training... including Multiple Teamwork "Formational" fighting drills / technology. Its also about things like proper Combat Breath. Special techniques, and superior Attribute developing training methods.. as well as special Training + Healing Lineaments. Even possible positional and or mechanical corrections... from the current Flaws in the modern degraded methods.

Hi Karate Breakdown. People keep trying to make karate "work," instead of understanding it. Practice fighting is valuable, that is true. The believe that fighting simulations build karate's traditional skill is false. Karate's strengths come from its tradtions... not sport science or "pressure testing," The later are just patches for people papering over skills they don't have. As well as all these anlagies about "vocabulary," "grammar," "dots" and spectrum." These are useless, meaningless labels for ignorance. Hope that helps, CHEERS.😶😶
