keeping your birds safe can be a constant chore. i had a bird and a cat at the same time and i was constantly on alert to keep them separate, closing the door to the bird room constantly and cutting out anything scented from my life completely like scented candles (actually, candles, period), air fresheners and a lot of other things. i was doing everything i could but still one thing slipped past me: my neighbors. they hold barbecues in their yard very often during the warm months, but i always kept my window shut because the smoke can be incredibly damaging to my bird. last october, i had my bedroom (aka the bird room) window cracked open the slightest bit so i could get some air circulation and then left the room for a few hours. during that time, my neighbors started a barbecue (it was the last few days of october. i didn't think they would have a barbecue in OCTOBER) and when i came back in the room i realized what happened, but at that point my bird had been breathing in the fumes for hours. he became really sick. it seemed like he recovered, but then a week or so later he became really lethargic and ill again and within 24 hours of him showing symptoms, he died. having my window open less than an inch killed my bird. so while you should definitely be careful with household substances, you also have to make sure your neighbors are aware and at the very least can give you a heads up before they have barbecues in heir yard (or do whatever else, like set off fireworks)

That happened to me last year but it was kinda a hard situation to avoid smoke. It was when the fires hit Oregon and my bird at the time was at my parents house which is 15 miles away from where the fires where really bad so we had to evacuate all the pets in the middle of the night, all our chicken survived surprisingly but my conure I had to evacuate so she did breathe in the smoke for a day and she was fine for a week but the smoke was still lingering outside and I found her dead in her cage one morning:( it was very sad I felt horrible but now I am so cautious about fumes and smoke and all that.

An amazing alternative to non-stick pots and pans is cast iron. They are a bit more expansive but totally worth it, they last longer and don't dent or scratch easily. The best part is though is that they are naturally non-stick (if taken care off) and won't release toxic fumes.

I'm glad you mentioned the sleeping with them... although I have never heard ANYBODY say it! I have a sad story...I was 4 yrs old, and for my bday I was given a blue buggie (parakeet)... She was so sweet and very friendly. I was playing with her, and we were laying on the bed, she was snuggling up next to my neck and her warm breath was so relaxing...I fell asleep 🥺 I woke up, and went about my 4yr old business... When I remember I was playing with the bird! I couldn't find her... Until I found her dead... On my bed😭
I will never forget that day! So, I'm glad you said this, cause it's happened to me! 😔

I had a conure when I was young. Sweet bird that just wanted to snuggle in my side and sleep. I passed out , when I woke up , I couldn't find him. I ended up seeing his tail feathers sticking out from underneath the bed skirt. I had smothered in my sleep. Absolutely devastating and still bothers me to this day.

They have an air purifier that sits beside them and follows them to which room they're in. It's a shame that so many products don't label whether they have coatings in them, and don't often know when calling the manufacturer. Makes buying new things tougher!

The sleeping one is the one I struggle with the most. She(Luna) pretty much only screams when she's in her cage. She's out all day but I gotta put her in when it's time for bed and oh god does she hate that.
The other night I asked her if she was ready to go to bed and she immediately hid in my shirt. After a bit she popped her head out and I asked her "ready to go night night?" and she immediately hid back in my shirt lol. It's painful putting her in there when I know she really just wants to sleep with me, but like you said it's just too much of a risk.

that situation was around 6+ months ago, shes already been to a vet and is very close to full recovery. she walks with a limp but its close to that confident bird walk.

A couple of things. 1. Parrots can easily chew through window screens. 2. I built surrounds for my ceiling fans, which hang from screw eyes on screwhooks in the beams in the ceiling. These can be made from 1/2" plywood and 1/2" square hole screening. As my fans are about 5' in diameter, I had to put one central piece of wood across the middle to support the screening. It wasn't expensive. All wooden parts can be derived from one 4x8' sheet of 1/2" plywood. So far, my bird hasn't chewed up the framing; but he does like flying to it and hanging upside down a lot. If he does eventually chew up the plywood, I will have to replace the wood with some white oak, which he can't seem to easily chew.

I have a question we have 4 canary and a parrot we use air freshener plugs in our downstairs bathroom and master room which in none of those areas our birds stay at , is it still toxic even though they aren’t in the same room where the air fresheners are at ? Also thank you for mentioning other stuffs that can kill birds

When in doubt, don’t do it. I read something about a widow who left a nonstick pan on her stove to heat up while she ran to the restroom. All 4-5 parrots she owned died even though they were kept on the second floor behind closed doors with open window ventilation. Granted, teflon fumes are just especially toxic for birds, but the point still stands.

I use an air purifier when we cook on the stove top, even though I don't have teflon as I am worried about cooking oil burn off.

I think it's more the nail polish and nail polish remover fumes that are toxic. I recommend painting your nails far away from you birds, like on another floor or a few rooms from the room where your birds are.
I don't think dried up polish is that bad for them but try to not let your bird bite your nail polish off, because it's definitely not good if they eat a lot of dried nail polish

I am planning on getting a budgie and non stick pans are toxic to them right? But I was thinking if I went outside with their cage and them inside the cage. If I go into my balcony and close my glass door, will it be safe for them? I know I’ve been commenting this a lot I just really want to give my bird a happy and healthy life.
Thank you have a good day!

    I have questions! 🙋‍♂️
If cleaning products are not safe for birds, what should I use to clean the place?
So, it's not safe to use deodorants and perfumes if I have birds around?
I'm thinking about getting a pair of cockatiels, so I'm doing my research.

    • @dilshani01
      @dilshani01 3 роки тому

To clean the cage, I use (apple cider) vinegar, diluted in water. And I recommend using like roll on or stick deodorant because that doesn't give a strong smell and if you wanna use perfume, maybe you can put it on outside or when you left the bird room.
I hope this helps, good luck with your cockatiels!

I rlly want a bird and my mom is okay with me buying a bird but we have a small house and her room is right next to mine and the only "safe place" for a bird would be my room but I don't wanna risk getting a bird until I'm 100% sure my bird will be okay. I want bugies and what I'm thinking is putting them in my shed as bird room which is about the size of and average bedroom and no shelves or anything and is in pretty good condition. Of course I'll need to patch a few things up but once I get it bird safe I think I'll get s bird. Do you think it's a good idea?
