I see in a lot of apartment tours that they always have a lot of hanging things and fixtures on the walls. Maybe its a dumb question but are you allowed to drill holes in the walls to hang stuff?

I have an apartment in Chicago and actually asked my landlord that question. She said it's fine to drill holes and hang stuff. In fact, looking at my walls, I can see where they patched previous holes where the previous residents hung stuff (there is a small bump under the paint).
That has to be so hard to leave that apartment, it's so light & airy, beautifully appointed.
