Phil Scardilli so true... and what a sterling arrangement from Count Basie (uncredited here AFAIK) playing here with classic minimalist inflection. “Oh yeah.... like I [almost] forgot... what is it, the lyric? Right! ‘Sunshine and flowers...’” You don’t think he did that on purpose? Then you forget he was an actor, too. Well done, Frankie.... RIP.
"What the hell is the next line." Typical Frank, the human entertaining all of us. The best that ever lived. He made a lot of fun of himself when he screwed up. That is what made him close to us and made us love him even more. I doubt any artist would screw up today as they are too busy lip syncing.
In my old, and current, Italian American neighborhood in the '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s and up until today, Sinatra songs are "folk songs" for the second and third generation immigrants, if you know what I mean.
My finger is getting tired of hitting replay. I'm a teenager and I appreciate the music from back then much more. it is better quality and amazing talent!
Something that should never be overlooked about Frank Sinatra: He always give credit where credit was due. He loved the song interpretations of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Joe Williams, for example. And the evidence for that is displayed in Frank’s own inimitable style. A style that he could never have a attained had it not been for his selfless admiration and love for the singers mentioned above and others like them. To me, that is the reason more than any other that the infinitely talented Frank Sinatra attained his brilliant artistic heights. For all his towering and well-earned confidence, he was humble and infinitely grateful in the presence of those great singers he thoroughly understood and learned from. They, too, adored and blessed Frank for that. It’s a lesson that every aspiring singer should learn from Frank Sinatra: You can’t get there unless you respect, admire and learn from your forbears and other artists whose artistry you love! Thank you, Frank Sinatra! You knew how to ascend to those artistic heights! And because of that you are an inspiration for the ages!
FRANK SINATRA!! Frank was in his prime in this video. America! This is the greatest singer of the past 70 years. Frank sang effortlessly with an incredible voice, great phrasing, and was able to reach us emotionally. Frank could sing ballads better than anyone else. He also was a master of up-tempo songs , especially with his arranger Nelson Riddle. Have been a Sinatra Fan for 50 years! May God bless the great Frank Sinatra!
A 1970 sinatra wasnt struggling with any songs. He could swing the shit out of a song in this period of his career. Razar sharp timing and phrasing. A 1970 sinatra singing a song feels like getting a bucket of ice water thrown on you. its just BAM
@@scottb2737 Really? Where did you read that, may I have the link? :O I've heard him say his voice in the Columbia era was "too high", and fans usually say his peak was 1955-58 or 1963-1965. I myself can't decide, each era all have good points. Edit: will elaborate. - Columbia era: he has such a pure voice still, so soft and fits the crooner style of back then, really puts me to calm and paints a picture of dreamy love. I can see why he gained stardom from this sweet, melodious voice and the careful selection of materials and technology, and how he uses being sensual to his advantage. - Capitol era: to me, this is the height of Frank's "smooth" voice, he has more punch and emotional depth (cause of life experience) here, and it's no wonder that his concept albums "Wee Small Hours", "Where are you?", "Only the Lonely", and "No One Cares" are considered his best. They really are the definitive Sinatra songs, I can't see songs from this era being sung by other people (metaphorically), cause his interpretation tops. They really are emotional and bring me to the mood, to tears even. And here is the sexiest, most romantic, swingiest Sinatra, so I love, love this era so much and I know why for many Frank fans, this is his peak. - 1963-95 (I say "1963" because "The Concert Sinatra" is the album where I first hear his voice getting rougher because of all smoking he did): he sounds really... restrained in some of his albums ("Cycles" comes to mind). But he still has that intimacy, that skill of making a song his. But the deeper, darker voice is really nice to listen to. It's the "signature Sinatra voice" after all, and he didn't lose his timing and phrasing in old age, seems like he could still hold his breath really long.) But in live performance, tbh he's better than ever. He oozes such charm.
What an artist, what a performer, the consummate musician -- what memories, there is simply none better before, during or after Mr. Sinatra, Thank you for what you gave us, Frank, and thank you for posting his unforgettable songs!
Still for me there's no voice in the market better than mr: Frank Sinatra. To listen is go know about music, only an ignorant, would not recognize such a talent.
Every time it rains, it rains pennies from heaven Don't you know each cloud contains pennies from heaven? You'll find your fortune's fallin' all over the town Be sure that your umbrella is upside down / Trade them for a package of sunshine and flowers If you want the things you love, you got to have showers And, when you hear it thunder, don't run under a tree There'll be pennies from heaven for you and me / Every time, every time it rains, it's gonna rain, pennies from heaven Don't you know, don't you know each cloud contains pennies from heaven You'll find your fortune's fallin', all over the town Be sure, be sure, yea, your umbrella, layin there and its wrong side down / Won't you know, "What the hell is the next line." Sunshine and flowers! / If you want the things that you love, you got to have lots of showers And, when you hear it thunder, don't run under a tree There'll be pennies from heaven for you and me For you, and for you, and for you, and me.
Beautiful as always with the great Ole Blue Eyes.I agree the drummer spoilt a little bit.I like it when he plays this song with the great Count Basie Ochestra
Mr. Miller was a superb piano player and conductor. I wonder what it felt like during this era not knowing the "Chairman of the Board" would emerge bigger and better several years after this "retirement' concert. Thanks for sharing.
At 1:03, when he sings, "You've got to have showers," it sounds to me like he's imitating Tony Bennett, in an affectionate homage, especially in the way he sings "showers." Anyone agree?
Pennies From Heaven was the title track of a 1936 motion picture in which the golden star of Hollywood Bing Crosby plays the role of a drifter who while accompanying himself on an ancient lute serenades an orphan girl.. This ballad is by Johnny Burke and Arthur Johnson. Way before Frank Sinatra
Only Sinatra could add words, omit words, change words, or forget words, and still be the best.

too true
Sinatra could not even show up and it would still be an amazing performance. Brilliant arrangement by Quincy Jones. 👍
I do that but im not good
He doesn't just mess with the words. He alters the phrasing and emphasis at times, too, but it works all the better for it.
"What the hell is the next line." Typical Frank, the human entertaining all of us. The best that ever lived. He made a lot of fun of himself when he screwed up. Steve Smith Frankie is the homeboy that did good
You don't have to be Italian to be a Sinatra fan. It certainly doesn't hurt, but it's not totally necessary!
Sinatra was and still is one of the most iconic singers in the History of the country. His art is also revered everywhere in the world.
....I am so glad I saw Mr. Sinatra. The greatest. Period.
My finger is getting tired of hitting replay. I'm a teenager and I appreciate the music from back then much more. it is better quality and amazing talent!

I love frank but he was not in his prime here. Listen to his Vegas live album with Basie and you will see.
yes he was in his prime......incredible on all fronts....voice, interpretation, swing, performance......YOU DONT GET BETTER THAT THIS,....right Kanye?
Effortless singing. He doesn't have to contort his face like today's so called singers. Just pure raw talent which will never be matched.
I am using it to help the younger generation.

jasong146 yep
I've read that he later considered that very year, 1970, as his peak vocally. Making this performance all the more interesting.
If only the audio was better. I love the song selection of this performance but the god damn audio..Maybe it was his mic...I don't know.
jasong146 the better quality is available for money. They want you to buy their 7-DVD box set. (Read the description).

El mejor con diferencia
At 1:03, when he sings, "You've got to have showers," it sounds to me like he's imitating Tony Bennett, in an affectionate homage, especially in the way he sings "showers." Anyone agree?
Muito bom
Who was the lady who introduced Sinatra on stage for this farewell concert ? Was it Ann Miller ? (That moment is not in this particular video)
In this occasion, Grace Kelly... Or Rosalind Russell if you are speaking about the 1971 retirement concert
2:00 "What the hell's the next line?"
Come Bella
Frank seemed to be in his element here.
What's that BOOM sound? xD
That was a thing with Frank...His "Sinatraisms" stomping his feet, shrugging his shoulders...nodding his head whenever the band would wail on a note.
for you and Meeeeeeeeee
He said it with style ...didn't he?
Old Merkin-top ?
Relajante, ideal para compartir cuando estas con tu chica a solas. muy romántica, etc...
This is "not" Frank Sinatra's "Pennies from Heaven". This is a 1936 American popular song with music by Arthur Johnston and lyrics by Johnny Burke.
I guess those 61 dislikes get no pennies from heaven
