It's sad that we hardly hear starting sounds anymore or experience the joy that goes along. Starting a PC back in the day was an act of transporting yourself into a different world for a few hours. Now, I just put my laptop's flap down as soon as I am done without much regard to logging off or shutting down. And since I would just as quickly start staring at my cellphone, there's no changing of worlds. It's the same digital world everywhere - just different devices.

I was only ever alive long enough so far to have heard XP and beyond on computers at home. I've never heard the 95 or 98 ones before and honestly they're amazing! Feels like they gradually went downhill IMO.
@Digby Dooright Agreed but for the only annoying part of Windows 10 which is the buggy updates Microsoft rolls out without testing periodically. The OS runs well if you don't update it (which practically is not possible as some updates are automatically installed in the background).
I always liked Win2K's startup - it was very relaxing and content, like musically saying, "It's OK - we've got this." Weird, but that's how it always felt.

95 - vaporwave favorite thing to abuse (and all retro) NT 4.0 - like that scene in simpsons 98 - 95 but no one uses it that much in terms of music n memes ME/2000 - "Welcome to the new millenium. We hope you like your stay!" XP - Timeless, even in sense of memes. Windows 7 - Not very memeable, but the most beatiful in terms of desgin and on par legendary with XP. Anyone who grew on 7 is as respected, as someone who grew up on XP.
Windows 98 is my favourite, honestly. My friend's parents had a sound pack that changed all the sounds to bird chirps... It was pretty cool. Unfortunately they don't seem to have sound packs like that anymore.
I didn't know about that until I tried W98 in PCem, they give you an option to install a "personalization pack" when installing the OS. Different times.

Literally an awful operating system which invented Driver DLL Hell, you couldn't uninstall Internet Explorer, prone to jillions of viruses and malfunctions and blue screen of deaths. I literally cannot think of a single way in which Windows 98 was an improvement over 95, but can think of dozens of ways in which it's worse. 95 -> XP -> 7 were all the big leaps of progression. 98, Vista and 10 are parasites.
Well I suppose I was purely referring to the startup sound which was definitely the best. The OS itself was a different story 🙄 10 is pretty good tho now in 2018, maybe not initially. But I'm a Mac user now mostly so probably not the one to ask 😂
Our first Windows was Windows 98... Ah man, those were the days. I was around 8 or 9 years old. Played my first games on it - Red Alert 2, Quake 2, Heroes 3, so many others and demos... We even had modem Internet. The Internet is the closest thing we have to a time machine. Thanks for preserving this. Its really nostalgic.
I think the Win 95 Startup sound might be the last piece of technology that made me think "Wow! Technology!" When I first heard it. Nowadays, we're used to tech "just working" when you switch it on, but I remember plugging in my first PC, switching it on, and being amazed when I heard the startup sound; no typing DOS commands, no flicking DIP switches. It just worked, lol.

I'm an old school guy. My computer is a Windows XP, and it still works. He works very well. Better than my window 10... So I use to play Crashday on it. For me, all the old stuff is Better than the new stuff. I love Crazy Taxi.

You can still hear the startup sounds, just turn them on.
Change System Sounds, tick "Play Windows Startup Sound" and press "Apply" and reboot your PC.

It has (Vista sound), but you have to turn on this sound in system settings.

@June Bug I love Windows 95 startup sound, much better than XP
My first PC ever was on Windows 95. Every time I hear this sound it brings back memories about that mystery box I was discovering how to operate all that apps and run games on. Great feeling :)

and it still works. He works very well.
