I've fixed Ty's Travis Bean before a show in 2017 in Berlin. This guitar is the reason why I've started to make my own aluminium necks. It just sounds incredible!! I'm so glad I could have this one in my hands, it just changed everything in my perception and how guitars should sounds. Thank you again Ty, you're the best.

I've been waiting a while for a video like this for Ty. I first saw & met Ty 8 years ago, no matter what he plays he always sounds like Ty. And he is one of the nicest guys I've ever met too.
The only constant has been that 1972 Quad Reverb, he's played a Mustang, Les Paul, back in his early days a Strat, Jaguar, SG Melody Maker, among others. Pedal-wise he's used Big Muffs, the Fuzz War, now the Hyper Fuzz and flanger.
He's really changed up his gear over the years to stay fresh and creative.
Remember kids, it's not WHAT you play, it's HOW you play.

Funny what he says about the Travis Bean only being for heavy music. Jerry Garcia is probably the most famous Travis Bean player that's been, and he barely even used distortion until the 80s.

This rig is actually very similar to what Kurt Cobain used on the _In Utero_ album. Many people don't know that Cobain used Steve Albini's Travis Bean guitar to record a portion of the guitar tracks on the album. Buzz Osbourne of the Melvins used and had also introduced Cobain to the guitars and championed them. Cobain became quite intrigued with Travis Bean's and planned on incorporating them into his rig after the European tour since he was still signed with Fender and in the middle of debuting his new Jag-Stang model. Furthermore, Cobain's favorite amp and the one used to record much of _In Utero_ was also a "Frankenstein'ed" Fender Quad Reverb. The amp was missing either one or two of it's speakers and only had half of it's tube compliment installed. This caused a very aggressive form of signal clipping (distortion) that mixed even and odd order harmonics.
As a side note, I'm pretty sure Peavey Mace amps are like 160 or even 200 watts. They use a shit ton of 6L6 power tubes. One of the guitar players from Lynyrd Skynyrd (I believe Gary Rossington) used them throughout the band's existence. 70's, 80's and 90's Peavey amps are pretty underrated. They quietly serve as the foundation for far more of the classic rock, punk, hardcore, indie rock, no wave/art/noise rock music of those era's. From Greg Ginn of Black Flag, Josh Homme of QOTSA and Lou Barlow of Dinosaur Jr using 70's Peavey solid state bass amp heads in their rigs, Lynyrd Skynyrd using the Mace, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth using the 160 watt Peavey Roadmaster as his #1 amp his entire career. To all the late 90's through the mid 2010's punk, hardcore and metal bands using 5150 and 6505 heads. Not the least of which being the GOAT, Eddie Van Halen. Plus countless other musicians people would likely not think of. Peavey's, especially the older ones, are really well made, durable, good sounding and versatile amps that can be had very affordably. Not to mention - from what I understand - American made.
Anyway, forgive me. I tend to rant aimlessly about things I find interesting and/or curious to no one in particular. Hopefully someone will get something out of it, lol.

The guitar Cobain borrowed from Albini to use on In Utero was a Veleno (which still lives at Electrical Audio), not a Bean. Buzz didn't get into Beans and metal guitars until way later in the late 00s when he got his first Electrical Guitar Company (EGC) guitar, and didn't get any Beans until EGC started making new ones.

It means Direct In, in this case recording directly into the console/interface, without an amp
Ty is the best. Cool to see his pedal journey!

      It means no amplifiers, basically.
The output comes directly out of the PA speakers and it’s drier and clearer
