Season 9 is known as one of RuPaul's Drag Race's most consistent, entertaining, and loved seasons. It jumpstarted a brand new era for the show on VH1 and introduced so many iconic Drag Race legends to the fans. Sasha Velour, Shea Coulee, Peppermint, Trinity the Tuck, Valentina, Aja. The cast is STACKED, so how did production deal with having such a crazy cast?
We go episode by episode to see just how rigged Season 9 was, determining what episodes had riggory, what the placements should have been, and how that would have affected the season as a whole. Will Sasha still take home the crown? Will Nina Bonina be Blac Chyna?

The fact that this season produced three winners, moments that shook the show to its core (Sasha's rose petals, the entire reunion saga) and gave us some of the greatest queens of all time (Peppermint, Alexis, Aja, Nina, Jaymes, Valentina) proves it is one of the best seasons of television ever
I am still a huge proponent of the worthy lip sync assasins just from this season alone - Sasha, Peppermint, Trinity, Shea, Nina, Valentina, Aja, Eureka, Charlie all could kill a lip sync. I think this is the highest ratio of all the seasons tbh.

Drag Detective talking about Charlie's eliminations excuses reminds me of Sahsa sarcastically going "It was a rough day for Charlie" during the reunion. It's an underrated moment.

I just rewatched this season yesterday, strictly to compare Sasha and Shea in each week. People focus on just wins and don't realize how close Sasha came to winning in most episodes, when shea was placed lower. Her track record in relation to shea is actually pretty close.

Sasha’s run in S9 is pretty underrated. People only see the wins, but not the whole picture.
Sasha was in the top (and so close of winning) many iconic challenges: the ball, the snatch game, the roast, the makeover.
And her low placement in the acting challenge was not low imo.
Exactly! I swear so often I see people act like Sasha did bad the entire season and completely robbed Shea, when in reality Sasha was pretty much top2 for half the season. She only won 2 challenges, but she killed the Gaga challenge, the snatch game, the roast, the makeover and the ball and you could easily make a case for her winning any of these challenges (well except maybe the ball). Sasha and Shea were very close and both killed season 9, yet Sasha absolutely won it in the finale

That cheerleading challenge was a hot mess. Even watching it the night it aired, I could not name a single thing that happened or that any queen did. But Valentina's runway went above and beyond everyone else's.

The only thing I can remember from that challenge is Valentina saying I'm also Corny. And Jaymes failing to say I'm snoozy. So I guess the episode was well judge 😂
jaymes was camp in this episode i think kimora should've been eliminated instead but let's be real jaymes would be the next to go anyway
I think season 9 is so great because it has so little riggory and feels so natural. The only rigged places are like some weird highs and lows and maybe some people could have been swapped for the bottom. I love this season and I hope we get something like it again soon.

Season 9 was something special. One of the strongest casts ever for sure.
This season for me was GOAT since ep1: The cast, the promo, the one and only LADY GAGA as guest judge, the lipsyncs, the challenges, the drama, the untucked shade, Valentina's controversy, the Top 4, the new format for the finale, the reunion, Valentina's Fan Favorite, Sasha's Rose petals, the top 2, everything about this season is perfect. Even the queens who came back for All Stars prove how this season was amazing: Trinity & Shea winning (and then making Top 4 in AS7), Aja redemption in AS3, Valentina in AS4, Eureka! making Top 4 in AS6 🔥❤️
I couldn't disagree more about Jaymes. I think people don't realize or they underestimate how much of an impact subtle things production does can have on the audience. When they play weird sound effects and show bewildered looks from other queens every time Jaymes opens her mouth or makes a move it's going to influence how the audience thinks of her. I also think from the moment she walked in the door the other queens (probably egged on by production) insisted that she was nervous and inexperienced...don't you think that would have an impact on Jaymes and the audience? I just think they did her dirty in a lot of ways and I thought that back when the season was airing. It's just like how if RuPaul doesn't laugh at something everyone acts like it's not funny...and then she cackles like a crazy person over things that are barely funny and all of that influences the audience.

NBB could easily win an All Stars if she's in the right mindset. She can dance, act, do comedy, make outfits, makeup, etc

I love the praise given to Farrah Moan here. She was always my favourite queen of the season and it kinda irked me that so many people kinda over looked her. Even if she didn’t win any challenges, she still performed really well and imo, was memorable (tho that might be because she was kinda known as the cry baby of the season but STILL)

One thing tho, at the Pilots episode even tho everyone did a good structured pilote, the only one I laughed at was Nina and Valentina’s, it’s such a fun mess, I love it LMAAOO

I’m one of those people who thinks Sasha should’ve eon the pride ball lmaaoo, I’m not one of her crazy fans it’s just that they needed to give rainbow and Shea didn’t give that and also I’m obsessed with Sasha’s head house
And just like that they'd both have 3 wins... and Sasha had no bottom 2's. Their track records were really close
i do wanna see a s8 video. it was a pretty fair season but i think there were a lot of strategic production decisions that could have gone the other way. (derrick being high on ep1, kim chi's first low placement, robbie turner's win, kim chi's second win, etc.)
Honestly, season 7 gets a bad rep, but season 8 felt like an afterthought. Both were hindered by the production, but in 7 I think we got more interesting cast.

You actually changed my mind on the ball… I always had Sasha’s unicorn look in my head thinking she should’ve won, but seeing all 3 of hers next to all 3 of Shea’s, I do get why Shea won!

Personally I don’t get why people say Sasha was robbed of the ball win. Cos I also see people say Utica should have won the ball because the emphasis should be put on the last look made in the workroom. I wasn’t really wowed by Sasha’s final look, in fact it probably would have just been safe had the ball been done earlier with more queens. I do get why Shea’s rainbow look may not have quite met the category but you can’t just choose when you prioritise the final look and when you consider all three looks together. Having said that the judging on the show is inconsistent anyway so I get the debate.

This is my all time favorite season and part of that is the fact that the judging felt incredibly fair and most of the shocking twists came from the contestants themselves outperforming or underperforming expectations more than anything.
Sasha deserved the win in the ball though. Shea didn’t have a rainbow look. I will die on this hill.
Some of the most amazing queens came from this season, in my opinion. The best cast of all time honestly, and by far one of the most memorable!
Nina being one of the most influential, opening the doors for so many alternative queens. Valentina, Shea, Peppermint, Eureka, Farrah, and Aja all bringing in some amazing moments and amazing drag in general!
Overall just one of the best casts ever!!
(Potentially) Controversial opinion, not directed towards Drag Detective but in general: We gotta let “who should have won season 9” go. And I’m a huge fan of Shea, but at a certain point it invalidates Sasha’s drag. And on most cases (different discussions I’ve seen online) we always come back to the same conclusion: Sasha won fair and square.
It kinda feels like the fandom is beating a dead horse at this point. Let’s pick a different season 😂

I think it's worth going through every season even if there's little riggory in them. Just so we can see the storylines production gave to the Queens.
Also I think you should go through season 8 because of the Kim Chi favoritism and the first episode is so rigged! Robbie being saved from the bottom 2, Lalia being in the bottom 2, Cynthia not being low!
Also Chi Chi not being in the bottom in the makeover, Bob not placing high in the premiere, Thorgy not placing high in the makeover, Betty not winning the first episode.
Kim was the original Gottmik. Saved from the bottom because she can't lip sync. Still love her tho!

I always love watching season 9 exactly because of the limited riggotry. It makes me wonder if they originally picked Eureka as the frontrunner but because of her leg injury they had to quickly re-edit everything.
That suspicion comes because much like the sh*tty pie season, it doesn't feel like a regular season but an all stars one. We get to see almost everyone shine in so many iconic moments.
When you started talking about episode 5, when you put Aja low and u tried to justified that i started to laugh so hard XDDD

Even though Sheas rainbow look wasn't rainbow I would also argue that Sasha's wasn't rainbow either, it was color block, in order to be rainbow it has to go in sequence and her look doesn't so I honestly don't think either of them had a rainbow look
I totally agree with Shea winning the Rusical (like u said, the runways have to matter) and Sasha not winning the makeover, just like you said. But Shea winning the ball just does not make sense, even though her final look was better, she flat out flopped and did not meet one of the categories

I cannot for the life of me remember where I saw this, I think it was on Hey Qween, but Jaymes also said that at the time she just REALLY didn't want to lipsync to Love Shack and hated doing it. So that sunk her more than her character. She didn't do bad, but Kimora still won.

They obviously want to crown Shea. There are two Whitney Houston songs in the finale and Shea exudes Whitney vibes. They just didn't anticipate the possibility of Sasha annihilating Shea.
Why do you think shea exudes more Whitney than sasha.
Probably one of the fairest seasons of drag race. Valentina being eliminated at that point really was undeniable because they were the weakest group and she didn’t know the words.
What irks me though, is people saying Sasha didn’t deserve the crown when she devoured both those finale lipsyncs and her track record being as good as Shea. Granted she didn’t have as many wins, but she was consistently in high placements plus 2 challenges where she arguably deserved the win (ball and makeover).
I love how you say that the "only" argument against Shea winning the ball is that it wasn't rainbow, like that was nothing. It was the challenge haha that was the briefing. It's like she got up there in a seahorse costume for Unicorn and you say "ok its not an unicorn but is beautiful" hahaha
You always talk about staying on the theme and when it's Shea missing the theme, suddenly is a weak argument haha

I know I'm a little late, but since you asked, I would very much like to see you cover season 8
Yea I agree this season had queens doing so obviously great and so obviously terrible each week that it was unessesary to rig things when the placements and the winner bets were obvious.
Also I don't disagree with the lip syncs being generally dissapointing, but this season had the most iconic lip syncs for the right and wrong reasons lol. I watch Sasha and Charlie lip syncs the same amount of times.
Ok so I do think Kimora outperformed Jaymes in their lip sync BUT when Kimora started doing a gun shooting thing for the ‘bang, bang, bang’ part in Love Shack, when the song is clearly saying ‘bang on the door,’ I was like come on girl it’s literally in the lyrics💀

This just made me realize that Season 9 may have been the most fair season ever. The big riggory moments for me were Trinity being in the bottom over Peppermint in the morning show challenge and Charlie not getting a top placement for the princess challenge. No eliminations were wrong and no wins were wrong. I remember thinking Trinity should have won the ball because her first two looks were good and her final look was 100% the second best after Shea's. I also remember thinking Sasha would be in the bottom for the Princess challenge because of the bedsheet dress and yarn hair.

I feel like this is PEAK drag race, not the best, but defenetly the most significant and herstorical season there has ever been
Maybe underrated but UK vs the world, as2, as3, as4, as6, as7 are very historical seasons, like those are VERY important for drag race herstory
First international season, first double crowning, first time we saw the winner get eliminated.. Thus not winning which happened TWO times in a row
Trixies HUGE redemption, as2 was the first season of AS to be enjoyable aka having a rebirth and having the best cast ever then the first 2 times winner ¿Jinkx? And in general the all winners concept
Lastly our first out trans winner and the success of the new format.. The next all stars rebirth after as2
