Btw: Do you know the Book deep dive videos Alexa Donne does occasionally? If you ever feel inclined to do something like that I would eat that up. I find it really fascinating to see how a story evolves and changes from first draft to final edit.

And I do know that series and funny enough I thought about doing it for Blood Like Magic but then by that time I had forgotten most of what I’d changed besides character names 😅 so maybe I’ll plan ahead while tender beasts is still more fresh in my mind

I always love your writing project videos and I’m so excited to see you continue to work on books and then even some new ones! I’m sorry it took so long to watch this! I did pre-order TENDER BEASTS months ago during a B&N preorder sale and I’m SO excited to read it! I absolutely LOVED DELICIOUS MONSTERS and I know I will love this one, too! I still need to remember to submit for your preorder goodies! 😍
Also, if you ever need a sensitivity/authenticity reader for disability stuff, I can read for: cerebral palsy, manual or power wheelchair user, mobility aid use (crutches, walker, braces on feet), mental health/illness/neurodivergence, Egyptian rep, Jewish rep, and other stuff. I’ve been doing this since 2019 (and I’m even helping another AuthorTuber I became friends with for her sequel). But I’d love to help! I’m very thorough. 🥰
I’m glad you clarified about wanting to make A MASTERY OF MONSTERS a trilogy, even though it’s a duology right now. That’s so interesting! You’ll be busy the whole year! Never a bad thing. 😊
Literary horror novella sounds amazing! I want it! I hope you have a chance to write it this year! I love reading novellas and writing them, too. I actually did query two of my Adult fantasy novellas from 2020-early 2023 (after many, many revisions and lots of beta feedback) to both small presses and literary agents for traditional publishing because of the encouragement of a fellow author friend (she even sent me a list of literary agents who accept novellas). There are lots of places that accept spec fic novellas besides Tor! I submitted to Uncanny, Dancing Star Press, and a few other places aside from literary agents. All rejections, but I’m glad I did it anyway. It’s something I don’t really talk about, but I feel like it’s worth mentioning in this case!
I plan on querying my PhD dissertation novel (Adult fantasy) -ALL THINGS WEIRD AND WONDERFUL-within the next few months (already got feedback from several author friends on my query letter and I have a draft I like). I just want to revise my novel a bit more! Waiting on one or two more people and their beta feedback and then I’ll dive into more revisions. It’s like what you were saying about revising your prose on a line level. It’s hard! I heard SELF-EDITING FOR FICTION WRITERS is a great book, but if you have any other writing craft books that could improve one’s writing on the line level, I’d love to know about them! I seem to struggle with this. A recent beta reader said the structure of my book is great as well as the arcs of my MCs (it’s dual POV), but my prose could be improved on a line level, and I know that just takes practice.
I’m also drafting a YA horror just so I have something else to work on, especially when I start querying again! 😬

And that’s great to know about the sensitivity reading you do, and I’ll definitely reach out if I ever need. It’s always great to have people on hand since it can be hard sometimes to find readers.
And I 100% knew there would be more places accepting novellas, I’m just very unfamiliar, so you’ve definitely confirmed that for me. Also I’m so glad that friend encouraged you and that you went for it with submitting because you never know what can happen.
I wish I had some line level books to recommend! So far, I’ve only found that one I mentioned a while back, but I’ve been hearing the recommendation to read more poetry and poetry craft books to help, and so I do want to try that. I’m hoping I can get into some poetry reading before I have to do line edits. And that’s wonderful that your adult is so close to being query ready! And you’re drafting a horror too! And yeah, very much agree that it’s great to be working on something else while you query so it’s a little less stressful!

Just Writing in the Dark by Tim Waggoner, which I thought was quite good. There are some inserts of extra advice from authors submitted which I don’t know that I always agreed with or liked 😬 but I found the actual craft book bits to be helpful

since A Mastery of Monsters takes place at a university, does that mean you're venturing out of YA into New adult or adult for this? Good luck with all of your projects!
Not in this case! It’s being published as a young adult book and so it will still have that vibe. University is an interesting in between where you can either swing YA or Adult (trad pub doesn’t really acknowledge NA) and I’m sticking to the YA side with this one.
Even if you don’t publish the novella it could be a great newsletter sign up freebie
I would probably just yeet it out if I couldn’t publish it haha I don’t have the patience for a newsletter, though it is a good idea
