- This piece of music has always been a long time favorite of mine. Seeing Goku turn Super Saiyan for the first time completely moved me in my soul; I'm glad I had the episode recorded on VHS so I could watch it over and over. The music in the English Dub (by Mike Smith from Faulconer Productions) just hit me different to the music in the Japanese dub. There was something so emotional- particularly around 0:35, where the choir starts to build; that just sings Goku's hopelessness from the death of Krillin, juxtaposed with a hopefulness of a deeper place within him- in spite of everything Freeza has done and how unbeatable he seems, there's still a chance. I redrew and animated this still from the episode; it's one of my favorite images from this transformation. Enjoy!

in the early half i love that sad, melodic, choral element- so profound and truly dramatic. Frieza has brutalized millions of innocents to this point, and finally Krillin - and laughs about it. It's like the souls of the departed are singing a lamentation, crying out for Goku to please end this evil so that they feel dignified and avenged. Then the music ramps up cause Goku through his rage is stating: "mission accepted"
Very well said 🙏 That’s how i see the flow the music too, and you described it wonderfully. I would also add that a derivation of the choir is also used in Super Namek, which also speaks to the Namekian element to this music- the redemption for all those Frieza killed, especially the people of Namek.

The way you synced your rendition with the animation is literally perfect. The moment he turns into an SSJ while you flip the beat to 4/4 simultaneously is so satisfying to watch over and over again.

We were all at the verge of this moment on March 8, 2024. The entire planet was shrouded in dark clouds, with radical lightning, followed by a golden aura. It was as if the planet itself transformed in those moments. Rest in peace Toriyama-sensei. ✌🏻

For me, personally. This is way better than the original. I just love the beat right after he transforms. A nice balance with rage and harmony.
Goku's first super saiyan transformation will always be the best. The raw golden light of hope shining over the bleak scenario, born from the sheer rage of losing a close friend and the determination to end the one responsible for the slaughter of millions of lives.
And for the destruction of his home planet, even if he didn't grow up there and his ancestors (the saiyans) themselves were barbaric and cold
DBZ Future Trunks is the Best Transformation.
I love remixes of the ssj transformation, this one is especially amazing because it kept the same pattern and stuff but had the sounds remixed, truly amazing.
Gohan's SSJ 2 transform against Cell was my personal favorite regarding emotion. Goku's SSJ 1 against Freiza here is a close 2nd.
I didn’t think the original could ever be beat.
But this is just legendary.

I’ll admit I’m not super familiar with the Japanese version of the SSJ transformation, I know that it’s very different to this, I’ll have to go and listen to it to refresh my memory

It's vastly different. The Japanese version tries to show us the horrific event that just happened - our beloved silly goku transformed into a feared and powerful warrior monster like that even Frieza is afraied, a total nightmare!
Even the voice actor had her voice shout as manly and painfully as she could to show us that Goku isn't really Goku anymore.
While the English OST portraited the scene as something heroic and our knight in shining armor has finally arrived.
Should check it out and do a cover for it, don't think I've heard a cover of that. Would be incredible!
@@grampaspace yeah it’s amazing to me how just changing the music brings such a different feeling, music is just so crucial to film; it really is a character with its own voice. I did listen again, it’s so haunting! I’ll have to think about whether I could do it justice or not

This one scene kickstarted my journey in watching other animes after finishing dragon ball z kai (i know i heard many who don't like it but i excitedly waited for next episodes every week) i wouldn't have watched naruto, bleach, one piece, demon slayer, my hero academia, one punch man, fairy tail, black clover and others without this. I'm blessed to be a dragon ball fan it did more then just dragon ball it was my introduction to a world of anime and shows
