    I’ve been a residential appraiser for 17 years and decided to try this route. I took my first two practice test modules (carpentry and concrete) and got a 61%. It’s really hard material for someone that has never worked in construction. Going to regroup and try again tomorrow on these practice tests.

    • @BuiltByBaileys
      @BuiltByBaileys  Рік тому +3

      Yes it is very difficult to take this test without any field experience. This test and the ensuing licensure is the next step in the advancement of a person’s career in home building. I have people ask me all the time how they can pass this test when they have no experience in construction. The answer is you really can’t. If for some reason someone is able to pass this test with no experience at all, how are they going to have the knowledge to build? Not possible

    Just passed my ICC G13 exam today (first time around). The vid definitely gave me a bit more direction on how to study. Extra emphasis on understanding of how to use the book (I had some reasonable experience from school while studying structural engineering). Main sections used were wood framing, planning, administration, and oddly foundation reinforcement. Also, extra emphasis on knowing what the question is asking in regards to section.
    Also in CO, so this was cool to hear from a local.

      @@BuiltByBaileys I appreciate it! Maybe it's been addressed in your other videos, but how do I go about adding licenses for other jurisdictions? I'll be getting my first license for jeffco, but I'd also like to be able to work in Douglass county, elbert county, and el Paso county.

    • @BuiltByBaileys
      @BuiltByBaileys  2 роки тому +3

      @@davedoes1298 you will need to fill out an application for each building department you would like to get licensed in, and each department has different obligations. You will also need to get set up with the correct general liability insurance as almost all of them require insurance. Make a spreadsheet to keep track of all of your licenses as they will all expire at different times, and you really don't want them to lapse.

      You will need construction experience. Obtaining a GC license is not strictly about knowledge of structure but about all the building trades and real world building experience from the ground up. I would suggest getting an internship or job with a local builder and being hands on. Best way to understand all the codes and trades/assemblies

      some sections are a little different but depending on what the testing center is using it might not be that big of a deal. If it is older than the 2018 edition for the test it might be a little tougher to scale through the book or find some info as it has been re organized since 2015 a fair amount. You could find a book for the specific test, but if you are really familiar with the IRC you should be fine.

      The ICC tests are broken into classes of A, B and C. The one you are referring to is a classification of a carpenter and limited remodeling contractor, in which most states don't require any sort of license for, but of course check with local licensure as they might require a local test. This is not an ICC certification however. Why are you looking to classify under this one? Why not take the Class C Residential contractor test for the ICC?

      If you passed your master electrical exam then you would just take that info to your building departments or the state licensing center (if Michigan is state. I assume it is) and they will take that and your money LOL and give you your contractor license. Your master's test dictates your level. The license is a separate piece of paper that allows you to operate at that level. You should be able to get your master's license issued with that proof of pass. Congrats!

      I took the IRC in 2011, failed the first time. But I was also testing for an additional jurisdiction and failed to read the fine print of going to a website and printing off their additional code pages. I failed by 1 question, and I am pretty certain I missed ALL the "additional code questions" dealing with load tables in a higher elevation. I had just ended my career in law enforcement, so I already had a fine-tuned ability to look up information under pressure, practically a superpower.
      Check with your local Building Dept, they will let you know what code books are needed for specific licenses.

      Welcome to the channel! Wow! 23! Love it!!!
      Get very familiar with the IRC book as far as layout, sections, and how to search codes in the book quickly. What background do you have in construction? Understanding structure, especially wood framing, is pretty essential. Take as many practice tests as possible. And don't forget to breath during the test. Passing it the first or second time is pretty difficult, but you will get it.

    Isn’t that amazing that we can take a book and a calculator that the test is based upon into the testing session with us and then when we get out into the real world we will most likely never see that book/calculator again and yet you can’t take your phone with you into the test session but yet when you get out into the real world 99.99999% of the time you will keep your phone with you and refer to the phone/internet for answers/suggestions. Maybe it’s time to rethink how we take test and rethink what we are really being tested on/for. If you can’t do basic math then guess what, in the real world we have calculators. If you can’t think of a basic OSHA standard then guess what, the internet has that answer and if the internet and or phone is down like in an apocalyptic scenario then WE ARENT WORRIED ABOUT A FUCKING OSHA RULE/STANDARD!!! WE WILL JUST BE TRYING TO SURVIVE!!!
