I want to build one of these someday and yours is BY FAR the best AND the most beautiful I've ever seen .... subscribed, can't wait to see your crops next summer. ... bring it on.
It does pretty well in the winter, but only had the ACTIVE (it's not entirely passive) SHCS going this past winter - definitely improved the system, but still some freezing temperatures...
DO IT - paralasis by analysis is an issue - you just gotta start. My first greenhouse is in the backyard of my old house - it's a geodesic dome passive solar greenhouse with a large water tank I was growing rainbow trout (challenging)...
Even though you are far North, you might need vents at the peak of the roof during summer. If you install LED lights they really need to be very close to the plants to be of any benefit. RMH venting exhaust outside from the middle of building might prove to difficult. I would omit the cob benches all together because getting the exhaust out through such long distances will be hard enough. Rj - Beyond Harvest Veganistas
@@jeffrempel3285 there are automatic ones available. The one I've tried are the wax piston type that don't use any electricity. $60ish for a name brand and they are rated for 15 pounds of force. My 8x 12 greenhouse doesn't have any fans because I prefer to let convection do the work for me. I have one large vent at the peak spanning the whole length by 1 foot and the same at the bottom of the front. It works really well.
Hey, I'm in Calgary too! I can't believe I haven't heard about you. How do you feel about insulated covers for at night? You could cut your heat loss in half or better. I'm trying to implement one on my 8x12 greenhouse inexpensively.
Rocket mass heater with cob bench still in the future I think, in the winter when it's -25 c and sunny it'll be warm during the day, but can still drop to -8 ish in the night... that was without the SHCS charged (from a season of summer heat) and operating the winter to increase cold air at night - with this ACTIVE system pumping air from the warmer ground below during the dead of night on a cold winter night I'm pretty sure we'll be above zero
Awesome build! Great solar greenhouse design. I’m left with a question, what happens in the summer, when the sun is directly overhead? Does the inside still get sun?
Yes, it's almost solstice now (end or may) still got a moth to go, but shading from the overhang also helps to keep it from being an oven in summer - everything has a trade off in the greenhouse - insulation vs thermal mass for example. Direct sun in middle of summer is primarily in the front 50% of the greenhouse at solar noon.
This is a really nice greenhouse size. Which state are you? I have been doing a lot of research on greenhouses in order to build my own. Is that fiberglass? What would you say if I built mine with glass? Please keep us updated. Thank you!
Not sure - different purpose really - you can't grow stuff is a vacuum tube heat collector array with water heat storage:) and it would be pretty costly to install in the greenhouse, and would shade whatever behind it... all about tradeoffs...
Are those telephone poles treated with chemicals(pressure treated)? They all used to be as far as i know. It will leach into your soil. Very nice looking setup, i might have to steal some of your ideas.
Thanks for the info. I actually have a 100' Glacier Series. Have had some issues with not being structurally strong enough to withstand 60+ mph winds so had to beef mine up. Thinking of cutting mine in half some day and making a 200 ft passive solar. Just happened to see yours and got inspired!

yeah it would be really interesting to see how it all went..
Slow and steady wins the race - update above :)
Very nice, roomy and sturdy! Great craftmanship! 💜
this guy knows what he's doing
Nice build Jeff - very ambitious and well executed so far. Look forward to hearing how it does this winter.

Love it! I'm going outside right now to build it on my land!
Do it!!!
Man, I’ve watched your video do many times! It’s just awesome! Any updates? I’m sure you’re busy, but even a quick walk thru would be cool!
Looks great! Looking forward to seeing it with a food forest some day.
Yes, food forest is still a little ways out.... Slow and steady wins the race - update above :)
Any chance of a higher resolution upload? Would love to see it in more detail. Thanks for posting!!!
Hey Jeff, give us an update man. love to see how it turned out.
Slow and steady wins the race - update above :)
So, how did it work out? Do you have an update?
Slow and steady wins the race - update above :)
We want more info lol
Brilliant! What a joy to watch. Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome
This is so awesome! Man I'll strive to build something like this one day.

Thanks RJ - agreed roof vents would help for summer passive solar ventilation, but challenging to close every night in spring and fall ;)

Fantastic, waiting for the updates!!!
Thanks :) Slow and steady wins the race - update above :)
Very nice design thanks for sharing!
My pleasure
Nice. I'm your greenhouse fan
AWESOME!!!! THat's so well done, man! Thank yo for the motivation!
My pleasure - figured it'd be worthwhile to share with the world - for what it's worth - it's not perfect but nothing is :)
Great job Jeff!
Thanks Grasso

great Design
Thanks !
Impressive project! How about an update?
Cheers !!! Slow and steady wins the race - update above :)
This is so incredible! What area/growing zone are you located in?
That's huge! Update please.
GO big or GO Home right ? and "If you build it they will come"? Slow and steady wins the race - update above :)
Wheres the update bro? Other acerage owners are waiting lol
(Great work by the way!)

Impressive! How warm does it stay in the dead of winter? Love the rocket mass heater plan. Can you grow year round?

I finally posted one above :)

Please keep us updated. Thank you!
I would not use glass! we get massive hail in calgary... polycarbonate would be best if you can afford it.
wouldn't vacuum tube heat collector array with water heat storage be comparable price and greater heat return?
Not sure - different purpose really - you can't grow stuff is a vacuum tube heat collector array with water heat storage:) and it would be pretty costly to install in the greenhouse, and would shade whatever behind it... all about tradeoffs...

These are raw pine poles, brand new never used with no treatment
What happened? How did it work? Update?
it works - "it's alive...." some parts better than others - constantly improving
Update video due to popular demand ;) ua-cam.com/video/3YQNE6-2Pfc/v-deo.html
Great, Thanks for uploading, keep it coming. Where are you locating.
he said in the vid the pipe was from city of calgary so i would assume calgary area
@@duncanirving9724 You are correct, I'm a few min west of the city limits
What is the model of the temp/data logging device you are using? Nice structure! Looks like the Glacier Series greenhouse you cut in half.
Campbell scientific with radio frequency no Wi-Fi needed and yes glacier series good eye for detail

I think it is Oregon Scientific or something like that - yes it is the Glacier series cut in half - you know your greenhouses!!! impressive ;)
Thank you! Where is this located?
Calgary Canada
Either he lost his login information or died?
No I’m well thanks:)

Good to hear...
Any updates on the greenhouse
