Thank you! I worked on this for over an hour and watched six different videos. If you had not said something about the voltage and amps, I never would have looked. Then I noticed I was using a dell charger on an HP laptop. And the voltage and amperage were slightly different. I rummaged in a box and found the HP charger and it works!

Correction: the amperage on your charger should be higher than what your laptop draws, voltage is the requirement and the current will be modulated (not drawn to the max of the charger). Using a charger with max amperage capacity of less than your laptop requires may damage the charger.

Your videos are awesome, thanks. Very clear and extremely helpful. I've got no charging on an Asus R556LA. My cord works (putting out 19v), and I've replaced the battery, which will turn the unit on, but it's still not charging. I'm suspecting the power jack, so I've ordered a new one - any tips/instructions on how to replace? Is it soldered into the board, or will just snap in? Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

It depends on the computer. I dont have one of those in my shop and cant find a motherboard access video online :( So it would depend on what you see when you open it up. Most computers however, will have it soldered on

Elaboration and question -> I think the power jack or power supply has a problem on the hand me down laptop I just received that didn't turn back on (battery is a goner, so I'm depending on direct wall connection).
Already separated from the motherboard, a multimeter applied to the -power jack connector- while the P.Supply is plugged into the wall will show 19.5V, but moving the cord/jack around where it's plugged in on the PowerSupply side causes huge fluctuations. Stop moving cord, stabilizes IF in certain positions. I tried attaching jack port back into motherboard so I could see if the motherboard side is receiving the 19.5V (when stable), but my motherboard does not have an end like yours to apply power/ground probes to - it is mounted vertically, rather than horizontally to the motherboard (your example being horizontally mounted/attached), and the other end of the motherboard at that location HAS 4 soldering points representing the 4 (2 black, 2 red) positions of the jack port on the other side. When I try to place my probes on these soldering points, I get an extremely low voltage reading that doesn't change. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to see full voltage at these soldering points or not.
What do you think? (I ordered a new jack port and power supply plug on Amazon thinking I could just return them if it doesn't correct things)

    • @nikovandh
      @nikovandh 3 роки тому

To clarify something else too - the power supply jack doesn't fluctuate on its own (while not connected to removed jack port) but it's very hard for the red probe to find a spot where it gets voltage.. hence why I decided to remove the jack port and test them together).. because it seemed really difficult to get the voltage, and there is a missing chunk of plastic on the jack end, but I still wasn't sure if it was bad or not.

Just watched the Video's very good. Not being a Technician, if I buy the Connector part which is not expensive, can install myself. Does it entail just unplugged the old and in plugging the new. HP Diagnostics said the connector / adaptor passed the test???. Its either that part or I'm stumped its still reading 4%. Now I know where the hidden screws are to remove the cover I will suck all the dust out and pull out the connector device and then plug back in???

    • @PC_Monkey
      @PC_Monkey  Рік тому

Yes, usually the power jack is not a very expensive part. If your power jack is on its own board, it would be a simple matter of removing the board and replacing it. However, many power jacks are now a part of the motherboard and not on their own board. In that case, it would be a matter of replacing the motherboard or un-soldering the power jack and soldering on a new one. I dont understand the last question.

Hi, I have similar problem and came across your video, it was really helpful. But i have a doubt, hope you can help me.
From last few months my laptop don't turn on if i leave all night plugged in or also if i forgot to pull out the charger after shutting down.. next time it wont turn on..
this keeps happening i assumed its static and followed your previous to remove static build up..
but this time it didn't work out .. so i bought a multimeter, new power jack and a new button switch .. thinking these could b the problem
first i checked the power supply in charger and power jack with multimeter both gave me 19.5V ..perfectly fine
But when i about to check the power passes to the motherboard, i thought to match black with black and red with red.. but it gave a spark.. when u say put red on metal bracket..what does it mean ? and I haven't separated the motherboard it is still in place. do u recommend to remove separately and check it ? .. and can u tell me at what plave should i place multimeter red port .. and what is metal bracket ??

The powerjack should submit power to the motherboard through one main pin. Towards the middle of the rear of the port. That is where the charge should be read. You can put the black connector on the outside of the metal. That would be ground. Does that make sense?

Went through both this video and previously went through the "drain the power for 60 seconds and test battery and power adapter video" and also the unplugging the BIOS battery for awhile, and I can confirm correct power is getting TO the motherboard, but that's as far as I can get. If power gets to the motherboard, what's the next thing to check? (Do I have to test anything regarding pushing the power button on to know where the power goes next?

I have disassembled a MIIX 510 which doesn't turn on or charge. The power button will spin the fan for 1 second only. The charger gives correct 20V, tested with a DMM.
However when I plug in the charger, I always see a super tiny blue spark - this can't possibly be normal can it? You wouldn't notice it briefly sparks unless you had it disassembled, as I have.
It also sometimes sounds like coil whine on the board.
Would appreciate quick thoughts, thank you.

If your power jack is on its own board then you can simply replace that board. If its part of the Motherboard, then you would have to either de-solder and remove it, then solder on a new one, or replace the motherboard.

Your videos are awesome, thanks for the great content of your channel. About this video, I have an issue that's driving me crazy and I would really apreciate if you help me on giving me some directions. It's a Dell Inspiron 15R SE 7520. The charger wasn't charging the battery and the laptop won't turn on with the charger plugged in w/o battery. It was working only with battery and no charger. I did the 1 minute power on w/o battery nor charger to drain the static electricity after watching one of your videos (thank you again for the great content) and the problem was solved. I had the laptop being charged and working with the charger plugged in with or w/o battery, all perfect. But today, 2 days after fully working, it's happening again. And worse: the 1 minute static dischage procecure doesn't help anymore. I've checked the charger with multimeter and it's ok. I even tried another charger (same specs), no success at all. Right now the laptop works (perfectly) with the battery but the charger does not affect it at all. After watching this video, I've tested the power jack and there's something confusing me: the charger's output is 19.5V / 4.62A and those 19.5V are shown in my multimeter display when I test the charger plug. But when I connect the charger to the power jack, as you show in your video, the multimeter shows only 18.5V maximum. Could this be the problem? Sorry if I bother you with this, but I'm about to get crazy. Thanks in advance!

hey man im having issues with my laptop because it wont show any signs of life my charger is good but when i test the voltage of the power jack i get 5v other than 19v, but my battery charges it goes max to like 2v but when i unplug the charger, i can see on my multimeter that the voltage is going down slowly. I dont know if the battery is bad or i have an electric leak but there is electricity going form the power jack to the battery, and i dont know if it has to do with the problem but there is no hard drive.i have tried a bios update and tested the little battery for the bios and got like 3v. i would really appreciate if you could answer my comment thanks!

If the power jack is reading just 5V then that may be the issue if none of those other steps help. You may need to replace the power jack if its easy to do so. If not and if its part of the motherboard, you would need to replace that :(

Also I heard a little spark in the power jack area. I already tried plugging it without battery but still no charge light. There is also no burnt smell or any smoke after the spark happened. I wonder if it was a short on mobo or power jack do you have any ideas?

Hi, so a/c adapter tested fine, down to dc jack, where again, I don't know what i'm doing.
Mine has 9 wires, from closest to farthest from jack: a single white, then 4 blacks and 4 reds.
Does is matter which black and which red I test. Laptop is a DELL G3 17 3779.
In any case, I somehow managed to get a 19.xx v reading, so this is not turning out as I'd hope.
Tested with original battery and then with brand new battery, a/c adapter tested out ok, as well as dc jack.

If it starts going up, that could be a bad thing. Im not sure what computer you have or what the problem with it is, but most laptops dont operate on that high a voltage. Have you tested the charger? Does that same problem exist there or is it just with your jack?

If that video does not help, then I would suggest doing a BIOS Reset; ua-cam.com/video/VO5BhbiItCM/v-deo.html
After that, I would then test the charger and power jack. If those check out ok too, then your looking at needing a Motherboard replacement.

@@PC_Monkey Hi, I have fixed the problem and here is how
I have checked by the multimeter, the charger (working), jack (working), the port on the motherboard (working).
So next I have checked the MOSFET on the other side of the charging port, and there was a 19.5V of one side of the MOSFET and a 0.8V on the other side.
so I have soldered tiny cable between the 2 sides and it worked.
maybe you can make a video about it.
Thanks a lot, I wouldn't solve it without you.
