- The PlayStation PS5 has been hacked thanks to a PS5 Kernel exploit + Webkit vulnerability for Firmware 4.03. I have an old exploitable PS5 so i decided to try this exploit out myself
Note: This exploit has recently been ported to 4.50

It took longer for people to be able to buy a PS5 than to hack it
YES
Got one the month of release and it's sitting on an exploitable firmware.
well the console is more or less normal x86. with previous generations (besides the xbox one and ps4) there was a whole different architecture every single time.
true
today's hackers aint interested than previous consoles.
A foot in the door is better than still having a locked door. Great to hear.
I'd say it's more like picklocking the door handle lock, but there is still a security chain or latch on the inside of said door. All you can do is peek inside.
I guess it is good if you never plan to connect online and keep an old firmware version forever.
Ahh, but once everything has been handled, there will likely be pre-modded USB based updates. Security has become better, but frequently once you're in, it's easier to continue to mod. (Speaking from years of tinkering with jailbroken iPhones and Android devices)
Doesnt change he is a total pos for click baiting. Not that I fell for it, I knew it wasnt hackable per se yet.
While there is a huge difference between homebrew and a kernel exploit, the former does not happen without the latter. This is simply because you CAN'T have control over the system without some sort of exploit, the easiest of which is kernel, because it is the lowest layer and most elevated of the system
It's ironic that the only way to preserve games in the all digital age is through jailbreaking.
Edit: for those of you who fail to see the irony in this; the ironic part is that people traditionally view jailbreaking/piracy as detrimental to the industry/hobby as a whole. Some people for example still believe that the Dreamcast failed because of piracy.
and Piracy...
@@the_holy_forestfairy i was trying to avoid using that word 😅
Anyone who bitches about piracy is missing the point entirely.
It's only true for console games, though.
@@manoftherainshorts9075 not really, even in pc gaming it is mostly digital. Steam, epic and GoG are all digital. Sure Gog is drm free but it does not change that most of them is diskless on top of being online only.
Big warning for people wanting to try this out, there have already been reports of bricks. These probably could be fixed via safe mode but still it shows that this really SHOULD NOT be used by end-users yet. Give it time, stuff will come in the future. (There seriously is no reason to use this yet)
Yep. Plenty of PS4s to get the fix for hacked consoles.

Exploits are like socks, they don't have holes in them when you buy it, but at some point one magically apears
I think you mean PS5 consoles are like socks. Exploits are the holes.
Also socks have to have at least one hole or you couldn't get your foot in them.
I badly want a t-shirt with words "MISTAKES WERE MADE" emblazoned on it.
Great breakthrough for sure. Always amazed at hobbyist inginuty
Good to see! I wonder what modders will be able to do with it in the future. I dont usually do jailbreaks till long after a consoles lifespan since thats when theyre usually completely cracked into.

The moment you said "execution not possible", I began thinking of a fake debug menu to throw people off from the right place. Tbh that is what I would have left in a consumer release given previous gen was accessible after a point. Just to make everyone focus on that, while hoping tech/dev access privileges won't be given to end-user by using a bug or exploit that the PS SW team not aware of.

Damn. Good reference.
If I understand this correctly it seems like it should now be possible to get a lot of data off the PS5 including data that could lead to the discovery of new bugs/exploits.
Thanks for the update MVG, I'm interested to see how this progresses.last I really you saying was there wasn't much interest in hacking the xbox one (and the series consoles?), has anything changed in that scene, are people looking at the more now?
Finally, I waited for this moment for so long! Not updating my PS5 finally payed off. Now let's wait until the jailbreak will be released. Keeping the fingers crossed for a PS3 emulator.
I don’t have one but I’m surprised you can update to anything other than the latest.
I’d expect Sony to require Internet access for updates, then force the latest on you. I’d expect games might include newer firmware to force an update offline but even those might simply refuse to run unless you connect to the Internet and update to the latest. Glad to see Sony didn’t go full draconian on that.
Sony doesn't go ful draconian it's simply an Xbox habit. A few games might require you to update but the console itself doesn't force you to go online.
ps5 is pretty much a brick without an internet connection, you can't play your digital library and I'm quite sure you can't use PSN on old firmware
I did the same method with the PS4 in the past. I purchased a brand new new console like mid way of its life span and just left it in the OG packaging, It wasn't too hard to keep it there since I didn't have any games to play. Waitied and payed of because i was able to jailbreak into in with no problem at the time.

Once online multiplayer really took of Sony started cracking down hard on the home brew communities.

I think it was reviewtechusa yesterday who talked about this hack and mentioned about how this would be hard to do unless you had like a old unboxed ps5 which was unlikely. Leave it up to MVG to have exactly that xD
Be careful with those USB drives you're using -- I use them at my shop and they fail constantly mid transfer
Fortunately it looks like Sony was smart about it and makes a local copy before updating.
Even if/when this does work on PS5: Will it be like the PS4 exploit in which you can only play games from the release of Dying Light 2 and anything prior to that release but nothing released after that point (no new games)? Is there any hope of a true exploit like on the Nintendo Switch where you can play any game new or old?
It looks like we can install PT but not execute it at the moment. If you are in EU or UK and search for a 4.03 console. I made a buyers guide. You can find out on which FW it is on without opening the Package by looking at the serial numbers
Always a good practice to keep a low firmware console, thanks for always being ready for these situations.

@@symphony137 appreciate the tip, but it’s now more im just apathetic. Kids nagged for a while but now have gravitated more towards the PC master race. I tend to dove into consoles towards the end of their life cycles on purpose (modding). This is the first time outside the OG Wii where it was way difficult to score at retail.

Are you going to do a video about the recent jailbreak?
MVG is a boss he has a spare PS5 just sitting in a box
It's no surprise that the exploit is Webkit related. Webkit has continued to be a point of entry for so many exploits, even on non-console devices. I bet it's one of the main reasons Sony didn't provide an entry app for browsing the web, so you have to open a link in a message / game etc to open the browser itself. Webkit is a complicated piece of software, and it's _really hard_ to build complicated things correctly in a way that leaves out all vulnerabilities.
You really opened it the day the kernel came out. 😂 Epic.
Not quite homebrew, but it's good to hear we're getting there. Baby steps is still forward progress.
MVG is the only authority on this I pause to take notice of. MOST of the news outlets are just clickbaiting people and making up whatever things they think will get more views.
I too keep a launch edition in the box. Waiting for a full fledged cfw
I wonder if you could do a intro to homebrew for PS2 video? I saw you did a video for the Gameboy and I have a PS2 on hand and would like to do some silly stuff on it
does this enable peek and poke? i remember on ps3 they had something of a ram editor. seeing as it just read and write. hmm i wonder.
The console availability will likely hinder the development around this exploit. Hard enough to get one. Much less with the right version
Console availability will likely hinder the entire generation
Why d you think the PS4 is still alive?
@@Matanumi pricing and as far as i can see there’s very little exclusive ps5 games that isnt cross gen. Honestly thats probably it
@@Matanumi that's idiotic reasoning. Companies ALWAYS support multiple generations for a couple years.
@@Ozhull It's not idiotic reasoning at all. Your counter argument doesn't address his point, his argument isn't that there is a lot of cross gen titles, his argument is that there's very little exclusives. While it's true that companies OFTEN (not always) support multiple generations for a couple years, it's also true that first party studios OFTEN support the next generations with exclusives, something which isn't happening here.
@@Ozhull No the eff they don't. Within a month of the PS2 showing up, ps1 stock disappeared. Same with the PS2 when the PS3 showed up. So far, PS4 is the exception with regards to Sony.
Nintendo Supported the WiiU longer than Sony supported the PS3 to the transition of the PS4.
Could you do a video explaining:
Why browser engines are so frequently brittle enough to hack hardware?
Why are browsers granted this level of privilege to the OS?
Browsers use a webkit, usually webkits have alot of undiscovered exploits.
Apps on the console run on a sandbox, if you manage to get an exploit that escapes the sandbox and then are able to get a kernel exploit, you got success, at least I assume this is pretty much it.
seconded
it's not so much that browsers are brittle, it's that browsers allow you to easily insert any data because anyone can host whatever they want on the internet.
let's say someone discovered an exploit in the theme system, that's great and all but you have no way to use it unless you make a theme that will abuse that exploit and then get it approved by sony and uploaded to the psn store.
or let's say you find an exploit in some way a game handles save data, unless you are able to edit the save data you won't be able to deliver any payload to abuse the exploit in the first place.
there is some game on the 3ds for example that allows you to scan a QR code which has an exploit, but again it's not very ideal since now you need that specific game to use the exploit and that game will suddenly skyrocket in price.
browsers are therefore not necessarily more brittle by some bad design or code, but just a common target because they provide an ideal attack vector.
in fact quite the opposite, browsers are much more hardened than any other software because of that, they know it's an ideal attack vector and spend much more time on the security of the browser than something like a theme system which they have full control over.
You should update your old videos of things when wrong like te Xbox 360 with the new RGH 3 and the GameCube with the picoboot those are awesome 👏
It would be so cool to see people making mods for PS5 games one day. Thomas the Tank Engine no-hitting Demons souls would be incredible 😂
Good! You should be in control of the hardware you bought.
I totally agree
Problem with that mentality is that the hardware would need to cost a lot more at purchase time. Company sells at a loss/break even, so for profitability reasons, the price would go up.
I'm not saying you are wrong for thinking that way, it's just that would have to be a consequence.
@@AFourEyedGeek That might be true for game consoles, but Apple for example does the same crap for their i-things even though the profit margins for these things are ridiculous.
Actually, I wouldn't mind it if you could pay an extra to fully unlock your console. Then people who want a fully managed, locked down system for cheap could get what they want and so would people who want to use their consoles to the fullest would have an option as well.
The current situation, where people have to leave exploits unpatched so they can take control of their own systems is broken.
@@Pesthuf if there was an option to have the ps5 fully unlocked that would open another attack vector for hackers to try to unlock the cheaper one. So Sony would need to work hard on allowing homebrew while at the same time not allowing it 😂
@@AFourEyedGeek it's nice buying it cheaper and getting more from it later by hacking.
Remember when exploiting the kernel was the highest privilege than a hypervisor?? Good times 😊
Maybe a weird question, but I'd like to have an explanation as to what linux needs to emulate to run PC software. It's always specifically gamedevs that keep saying that, calling everything from compatibility layers (i.e. wine, crossover and proton) to virtual machines emulation when NONE of those things are emulated in any capacity (outside of edgecases like the arm emulation for android "emulators" (which are just pre-packaged VMs) on windows)
It’s hard to emulate windows without having some access to the source code. Making it a technical and legal nightmare. Let’s just say, you don’t want Microsoft lawyers on your head.
@WhatIfGiveaway...Oh boy what did I win!
You always have the coolest music lol
Honestly, with the new subscription model gaming services like PS Now and Game Pass, I feel like there isn't much of a need at all to hack the system. In the past I've mostly just done that to try out games, rarely ever beat any of them. Now I have more than enough games to try already and new ones are coming in all the time. However, when the subscription services are no longer supported several years from now, this will definitely help people preserve and play the games on their systems, so keep it up!
Overclocking, custom themes, mods, fan translations, homebrews and much more
The only real way of preservation would be if we still use game cartridges imposibles to update with the full game in it like before. I still got 2600 games and they still works.
solid state drives are essentially that
It would also need to be DRM free
I can't wait to become a bigger channel so I can keep doing videos like these. I'm currently on my final strike for emulation videos and how to videos... Zero things that go against the guidlines with no illegal downloads or anything, just things like emulation settings. Keep up these videos though,
You, Simply Austin and ETA Prime are my inspirations.
seeing a stock ps5 using an exploit to allow you to install a different operating systems and having it run windows would be a sight to see outside of what ltt has shown from a mother board that came from China that was using at least the same/similar apu as the ps5 and ran windows on it since linux is just a standard sight to see on exploited game consoles
Only took less than two years for PS5's security to be defeated, much faster than the three years it took for PS3 and 4-5 years it took for PS4.

I have a question that includes the ps5 and ps4. Why is jailbreaking the hardware for homebrew so important today, since they are x64 like pcs today? Isnt it the same experience as writing a game for pc?
Because for me, homebrew is about the fun while programming and the experience i get while doing it for different architectures.
Its more for (eventual) copying of games and having extra uses for the hardware for playing media and emulators.
Actually consoles are still different to PCs. I see this as someone who wants to get into PS gamedev and have no other way to have devkit. This is very big reason why Xbox remaining untouched for 2 generations, because of dev mode being nearly out of the box.
@@vadnegru true. they may be more similar to x64 now but still not totally same
Just like any Windows software ain't gonna run on Linux even if both are x86 doesn't mean any Playstation game will run on any other x86 computer.
