  • On Saturday October 21st, 2023, APSL was on hand at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Maryland to witness a piece of American Railroad heritage begin her journey on a long overdue cosmetic restoration.
Former Reading Company 4-8-4 #2101 is one of four preserved Reading T-1 steam locomotives which gained notoriety first in the 1960's on Reading's "Rambles" excursions. After an uncertain fate, a 29 day restoration found #2101 masquerading as American Freedom Train #1 where the locomotive toured a large part of the US on the train's iconic journey. After her time on AFT duties, #2101 was painted in Chessie System colors and used in excursion service in the late 1970's.
During the winter of 1979 - 1980, while on a break in excursion service, the locomotive was heavily damaged in a Roundhouse fire and placed out of service while arrangements were made to find a suitable replacement locomotive and cosmetic repairs were made to the 2101.
Reprised in its AFT paint, the locomotive was donated to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum and placed on static display, where, over the next thirty plus years, weather took its toll.
Now, with the Bicentennial of American Railroading approaching in 2028, the B&O Museum has taken on the project of performing a cosmetic restoration on the locomotive as part of it's ongoing effort to not only celebrate and preserve this historic locomotive but American Railroading heritage.

I’ve been wanting to see this happen for the last 5 years and I’m glad that day has finally come and 2101 is getting a well awaited cosmetic restoration.

I was more excited to see the Western Maryland slug unit in operation.

Sometimes the moves made before hand are more interesting 😉
It's the only time Murphys 5th law is acceptable.

My special needs son hopes that real soon or sooner than soon that 2101 is restored to operation and to its Chessie System livery because he has seen films 🎥 of it pulling the Chessie System Steam Specials and would love to see it operate again but he does not want that to be wishful thinking he wants it to be a reality! He also recommends FMW Solutions for help in restoring it because steam locomotive restoration is one of their specialties.

Not saying it couldn't happen, but no one knows the extent of the fire damage.

@@bov634 Just remember, no matter what the damage is with God all things are possible and you can take that to the bank. My son says if you look up 2101 on Wikipedia it crystal 🔮 clearly says it is capable of being restored to operation but will need a complete overhaul.

We're not sure if that's a compliment or an idea for a complete program.
