I personally prefer both No More Color and Grin to Mental Vortex,but it's only to their credit,some bands would pray to have an album as awesome as Mental Vortex in their arsenal.
And yeah, it's the same with other bands under the radar. You never know,where you can hit a jackpot

Straight facts, man. I can listen to a different album of theirs depending on the mood I'm in. They might be my favorite thrash band because of this.

I listened to it all the time when i was a teenager. Now 33 and i can say: i was so f*ckn' right loving this.

Tommy Vetterli is absolute beast and it is beyond me why he is rarely if never mentioned in best lists. The same with Ron Broder as a bassist.
it is a shame that this band isnt more renowned than what they are. this extremly technical metal (it surely is not merely thrash) is probably too much for people to comprehend. I have played lots of coroner for friends who are jazz-musicians, and they have all been mindblown by the intricacy of coroners songs!
You ae right but it depends by yhe label and promotions. Noise didn't had a great promotion on coroner...see also Megadeth who gey are with their technical jazzy style...they had capitol on rust in peace..sooo? Made the conclusion.
Megadeth are more like Heavy metal than Thrash Metal, Mustaine plays fast and technically sure. But yeah there will be an eco system of music, the easiest to comprehend bands will be the most mainstream. The problem is that Metal is closed to few people only because of their elitist stance and attitude. Jazz and Fusion music has even more complexity than Metal, and technicality. Progressive ok it's like Alpha Zero meme.
It’s jazz that launched me in this direction. Came across some watchtower and haven’t looked back. Having fun exploring the techier stuff.

The guitar playing is so clean. I wonder if it sounds just as good live. Lots of metal bands were known to have great studio albums but not always so good live. I heard different about them but no first hand knowkedge.
Tommy vetterli is a beast ...coroner have only one guitar also in live performances...check them out and you will see that is one of a kind..

@@trinitymatrix9719 Even though your request was not addressed at me, I'd recommend one of my overall favourite albums, namely "Within the Veil" by Fear of God. It's not technical Thrash Metal like Coroner, though there are some Thrash Metal parts in some songs, but it's very dark and atmospheric and I especially like the vocal performance on that album. I have never heard anything similar to it.

I don't really like thrash but this progressive sound these guys have is really doing it for me. Can anyone recommend some more unorthodox thrash like this? I already know about watchtower. Thanks!
Check out Anacrusis, Helstar, Voivod, Artillery, Sadus. They can be a starting point.
Vektor possibly. Also the albums Symbolic & Sound of Perseverance by Death you'd probably like. Technical thrash with thoughtful lyrics. It's not a common combination.
Psychotic Waltz, Atheist, Spiral Architect, Cynic, Nevermore...
If "knowing about" Watchtower means that you like them, I'd also recommend "Life Cycle" by Sieges Even. The style on that album is very similar to "Control and Restistance". The albums which followed are also very progressive, but to call them Thrash Metal might be misleading. Another unorthodox Thrash Metal band are Mekong Delta. You could also try "World Circus" and "Think This" by Toxik. One of my overall favourite, yet not very well known Thrash Metal albums is "A Tribute to Insanity" by Hexenhaus, and especially the 10-minute-song "As Darkness Falls..." is IMO an absolute masterpiece! I fully second the suggestions of Anacrusis (especially their first two albums) and Voivod (especially "Killing Technology", "Dimension Hatröss" and "Nothingface"). And while I also like Helstar (at least their first four albums) and Psychotic Waltz, I don't consider neither of them Thrash Metal.

Eh non, malheureusement, le groupe a connu une très grande popularité après sa séparation en 1995 car leur style ,le "technolo-thrash " était trop avant-gardiste à l'époque. Mais le temps à fait son oeuvre ,heureusement. Et je crois même qu'à l'heure actuelle ils sont en studio pour un nouvel album 28 ans après leur chef-d'oeuvre "GRIN".🇨🇭🤘🎃
