So many thanks for this and for turning me on to so many new records in a literate and intelligent manner. Even though I write and do photos for a roots music mag (No Depression) what I listen to most, 90%, at home is Jazz on LP. At the top of my year end list, of what I've heard, are Abdullah Ibrahim's "3" on the great UK Gearbox label, the Bluesville reissue of the Rev. Gary Davis Prestige album, and ASS's "Body & Soul," it blows my Japanese 80s LP away. Happy New Year and keep 'em coming!

BBE are a blessing to J-jazz fans. The Mal Waldron - Terumasa Hino, Reminicemt Suite is a powerhouse
of an album and Ken, you’ll dig the drum work. Great pick!

I agree. BBE have opened my ears to Japanese jazz. It definitely has its own sound and feel and it’s been great to start discovering some of it :)

So interesting, eclectic. Thanks to you both! Does Syd remind anyone else of a younger Jon Stewart?

Great initiative to voice Syd‘s picks of 2024. Thank you!
Cassie Kinoshi‘s is one of my picks, too. These International Anthem releases are mostly treasures, and I would add Asher Gamedze‘s latest album to the list.
The Japanese Mal Waldron album is a killer and belongs in every avant-garde Jazz collection. Is my first and only BBE so far.
These small and dedicated labels and also the likes of e.g. Reel to Real deserve more support and parts of our wallets so that they can eventually make profit and survive. Otherwise we will be left with the monopolist giant global labels and their play.
    Happy Holidays!

IARC had many interesting releases over the last couple of years. Thinking of Jaimie Branch, Anna Butterss and Jeff Parker.

Great interview with Syd. The more I listen to you two, my “Jazz Brain,” grows larger, but mysteriously my wallet gets lighter. Go figure, LOL!!!

The Mahavishnu is so good. Basically putting it on and going to a M.O. concert which I always wish I would have been around to see.

Great info on these (new to me) artists and records. Not sure about Crosley but a modest Pro-Ject w Ortofon cart + good phono stage can produce very good sonics. Maybe give those exotic turntables u r reviewing a run for their money 😅.

i have reviewed an inexpensive Project as well as U Turn Orbit. Tremendous tables. The $650 Project Super Phono T2 I reviewed at AnalogPlanet is a beast!

Regarding Sonny Rollins A Night At The Village Vanguard, Mr. Schwartz seems to be under the impression that the additional tracks are receiving their first release with the recent 3LP Tone Poet vinyl pressing. However, all of this material was issued in 1987 when Blue Note issued Volume 1 and Volume 2 of the Vanguard shows on compact disc.

Compact disc is one thing, vinyl is completely different, requiring a new remaster.

@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455Totally true. But in this discussion, Syd was expressing how it is not always beneficial to release bonus material to expand upon an initial release and how he was delighted by the added tracks of this Village Vanguard set. If he was familiar with the long in-print two volume CD release he would have fully expected this material to part of any new vinyl reissue as this expanded edition has for decades been the accepted and applauded version of this classic album. I was gratified that Mr. Schwartz demonstrated his continued affinity for the CD format by showcasing the Zappa box set. But I must note that I see too many vinyl enthusiasts discount or ignore the wealth of spectacular CD releases (a great many with bonus material yet to be issued on vinyl) because of a certain disdain for anything digital. I firmly believe both the analog and digital formats are essential and both should be embraced and celebrated by music lovers.
