I’m now 71- an old rocker, - grew up playing long before Saga came on the scene, but I always stayed up to date with the latest music coming out,
And I must say, when Saga came out, their incredible blend of super catchy hooks and power house sound won me over.
I still love this band and all they do.
    Bravo Guys.
    Saga forever!

I'm 61, grew up in Houston, Texas. This song by Saga rocked!! So reminds me of high school! Indeed we had some cool rockers from Canada. Loverboy, Triumph, Bryan Adams just to name a few.

Canada's answer to Freddie Mercury (you'll have to hear more songs to get that). Also, if I'm not mistaken, the pristine production was by Rupert Hine, who I believe was unparalleled in his day.

"Wind Him Up" from the same album is my favourite. Saga actually played my high school (about 30min from their home on Oakville) on the Worlds Apart tour. Alas, I was an idiot and did not go to see them -same thing with The Spoons (check out their Nova Heart or Romantic Traffic for another Canadian band you've never heard - more new wave than Saga). Rush also played my high school but before my time. Keep up the great reactions!

In 1980 I had the privilege of seeing Saga open up for Rush...it was an incredible show. For more Saga check out Slow Motion, Wind Him Up, Careful Where You Step, Don't Be Late and The Flyer. Also, they did a Chapter series that creates a story. I believe it is on their first 4 albums. Some other "FIRE" Canadian bands are Trooper's Look So Good, Chilliwack's Fly At Night, Prisms Armageddon, Kim Mitchell's Go For Soda and Doucette's Mama Let Him Play...keep up the great reactions and awesome Canadian content!!!

This song didn't hit the airwaves in small town north Texas until 82'.
I was instantly smitten because nothing else sounded like this on the radio, at least that I had heard.
It's the keys, guitar, and cadence that blew me away. It wasn't new wave pop twaddle that kept smacking us in the face. It was real rock but funky. This and "Wind Him Up".
We had no idea of labels back then with Prog and all. There was Rock, pop, R&B and Disco and that was about it in the rock-adjacent world. I think we had just recently heard of Metal and Rap in early 82.

Wow! Thank-you for listening to Saga!. Grew up on this band. Michael Sadler is an incredible frontman and Ian Crichton has unique style of his own on the guitar. Their live stuff is great. Canadian gold, guys! Here in Germany Saga was and is a banger. They have a solid fan base. When they come over to Germany, concerts are reliably sold out. There is a live version of this song, played at the Rock am Ring festival. Sadler and his mates are live awesome. And try a few other songs of them as Wind him up, Scratching the Surface, The Call, How Long, Gotta Love it, Only Time will Tell ... great stuff

Finally a reaction to Saga. Love this band. The guitar and keyboard interplay is phenomenal. This album is followed by Heads or Tails which is superb. One of their most epic songs however is Careful Where You Step off of their third album. Plus Ian Crichton the guitarist is so underrated. The keyboard player is Jim Gilmour and he is again underrated. He is the main keyboard player and plays most of the keyboards but the singer, Michael Sadler also plays keyboards and so does the bass player I believe.

Sure some Canadian artists have had extensive exposure in the U.S. -Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Rush, Celine Dion, Barenaked Ladies, Bryan Adams, Nickelback, Shania Twain, Avril Lavigne, The Guess Who etc. But so many great bands/singers haven't. Saga is definitely one. April Wine. Triumph. The Tragically Hip. Blue Rodeo. Sum41. Crash Test Dummies. Platinum Blonde. Honeymoon Suite. Spoons. Strange Advance and Gino Vannelli. I hope that you guys do a theme week/month highlighting some of these great bands songs. Canadian viewers of this channel chime in and let them know what to react to.

It always make me happy when you guys like music that I love and grew up with especially when it's a Canadian group and one from my hometown. Canada grows on you. This group's members are from Oakville, Ontario and Mississauga, Ontario. I was born in Oakville and currently live in neighbouring Mississauga. Their Worlds Apart album (1981) is fantastic. I bought it when it came out loved it from the beginning. I played the crap out of this album. Wind Him Up was also a massive hit from the same album. Framed, Time's Up and Amnesia are other excellent tunes off the LP.
P.S. I don't hear Rush at all in Saga.

Awesome guys. Great, great song. One thing you definitely should do is revisit this reaction to the VIDEO VERSION is this because the performance aspect is KILLER!! It's conceptual and stage performance with the majority of it being performance, can't stress it enough, check it out. The lead singer is the one playing the keyboard but in that middle break he's playing a keyboard and a piano with the keyboard sitting on top of the piano and he's playing each with one hand, BADASS!

The "Worlds Apart" album is fantastic! The album was produced by the brilliant Rupert Hine, who also produced for Rush, Stevie Nicks, Howard Jones, Thompson Twins and others, so I think that is definitely where you get some of that familiar 80s sound. Definitely a fun band to explore... funny on your album cover image though... my college rommate and I originally had this on vinyl and the US looks to have had an alternate album cover... closeup of mirrored sunglasses face on the cover...

Saga is more prog than Triumph but just as listenable. They have haf several songs played on American radio but in the days before streaming you had to kowtow to whatever the station programmer wanted the DJ to play. They have songs scattered throughout their catalogue that are listed as chapters. All these chapters tell part of the same story.
What Do I Know is a terrific song by them but they have a lot of great songs.

Nice to see you guys having such a great time reacting to this song, a great song from a great band. I have been a fan since Saga’s very early beginning and your reaction to this song accurately reflects how I felt when I first heard them many many years ago. I have been fortunate to see them live ~12 times and even met the band members after one of their shows; not only are these guys amazing musicians but they are amazingly humble and great guys. I always thought that Saga was not only underrated but also ahead of their time; so, to have you guys have such a great reaction 40+ after it was release says a lot. They definitely have a unique sound and I have yet to find a band with such interesting and complex interplays between guitar (Ian Crichton) and keyboard (Jim Gilmour). And yes, Gilmour is the master keyboard player, but he is often supported on keyboard by Sadler as is the case on “On The Loose”. Regarding your album cover comments (which by the way was so funny), note that the US release had a different cover; one without “Socrates” who, as Michael Sadler recalls, was named John and happened to be a man they found in a village near the recording studio and invited him to a photo shoot. The story does not say if John came to the village via a spaceship or not though.....You can actually see the band standing behind the smoke!! For more info on the “On The loose” recording, have a listen to this “Behind the Vinyl” with Sadler ua-cam.com/video/cCUyM4OBP2w/v-deo.html
If you want to experiment Saga’s “Wonderland of sounds” (quoting Ryan here) , I suggest you give a listen to “Wind Him Up”, “Conversation (instrumental)”, “Framed” or “No Stranger” …all from the same World Aparts album or if you want to sample some of their earlier masterpieces, “ Don’t be late”, “Humble stance” or “Tired World” to name a few, would be my suggestions.

I actually saw this tour! They were opening for RUSH! If you can believe THAT! Seriously! I saw it live! SAGA is a greatly underestimated band! I have their best of! Can I use even More exclamation points?! !!!! Maybe….
On The Loose! Catwalk! Why Not? Go loud for Canada! 🇨🇦
Unbelievably, I don’t remember which exact RUSH tour. It was in the early 80’s, I can say that for sure. It was an excellent concert, I do remember that about it. 😁

Saga was and is the most successful in Germany, much more than in Canada. They are successful til today. Their last album 2021 peaked at 11 in our album charts. Their biggest success had been the albums Worlds apart (1981), Heads or tales (1983) and Behavior (1985). The first one was nearly a year in the charts, peaked at 9, the next one peaked at 3 and the third one at 2. Place.

I can thank my occasional forays into German radio for introducing me to Saga and Iron Maiden. I lived in, then, West Germany 4 different times between 72 and 90 for a total of 11+ years. Dad was in the U.S. Air Force. I mainly listened to the American military run radio station, but when I was 13, I really started forming my own like's and dislike's as far as music goes and German radio provided some relief when American radio was playing country. I discovered this song fall of '81 and went out to buy the album. It was a few weeks before I left Germany to go into the Marine Corps in 1986, when I heard a track off from the "Somewhere in Time" Iron Maiden album...

@@Wolverines77 Iron Maiden in the 80s and 90s had been a bit more successful in the UK than in Germany, that changed from the year 2000 on, now the were remarkingly more successful in Germany.
