June Anderson is a wonderful singer who I very much admire, but she nor any other singer doing this very difficult music was vocally perfect. Many arm chair critics picked her apart and hated on Miss Anderson in this role in comparison to Callas and Sutherland . Miss Meade sings this role with the voice she has and the musicianship and skill at her disposal which to me is considerable! Her voice sounds quite good to my ears and she does a highly ,credible job of interpreting this frighteningly difficult ,music! I would like to hear any of her critics top her performance or equal it! if you want June Anderson listen to her ,she is here on UA-cam and enjoy her .Why insult and belittle Miss Meade ? If Meade disgust you listen to many of the other artist singing this Aria who are on the internet. I personally see nothing in this performance the Lady has to apologize for ! I would love to have the entire scene !
It’s OK to not like a performance, or to prefer one singer or another. But to say that this is bad, is simply absurd. Ms. Meade’s talent and skill are absolutely world class. She’s better suited for some music than other, just like every singer is; and of course she doesn’t do things like Ms. Anderson, or Ms. Sutherland did. But that’s all the more commendable: she brings her signature to this role - a role that is so difficult to sing, it is seldom performed these days. In my opinion, if one is only clinging to past performances by singers who are no longer active, they’re condemning this art form to extinction.
Preach!! I never heard of Ms. Meade and after hearing this performance I personally don't find her outstanding in any way - she sings very well, obviously, but very safely as well. While that might not be my taste necessarily, I still appreciate the fact of her virtuosity, agility and professionality of her voice. It's unfair to compare singers of today with the singers of the "golden age", when they have so many other factors to compete with (e.g. Ever-fading audiences/venues, the same critics who prefer a particular kind of voice that makes the singers uniform, the changing taste of the "specialists" who maybe go to the opera once every other year). It's a different world.
No performance is perfect but love her voice. Let it be know that the MET gave her a check! Lastly for the people that have negitive comments post your resume as well as your mulitple MET roles.....I'll wait...
No hay una sola versión de un aria determinada, hay que ver quien la esta interpretando y como la siente ,pues cada uno tiene su propia forma de sentir lo que esta cantando . Nick I agree with you wholeheartedly! These so-called voice experts have all got their heads up their arses!!! Bravissima Ms Meade for a wonderful interpretation and fantastic agility through the runs and roulades!!! I thought the embellishments were very tasteful and a tempo in the music line and in general a WONDERFUL performance! BRAVISSIMA!
All these negative comments are so disrespectful and pathetic. Miss Meade is a wold class soprano singing in the most prestigious opera houses in the world, but everyone is an expert on her voice and what she should be doing. Plus size opera singers ALWAYS mysteriously receive the most criticism and to be honest all the unnecessary hate you people leave is transparent. A wonderful performance I say!
It’s good to see the MET hadn’t change their low standards for BelCanto music. Meade sounds subpar at best. How is she getting starring roles in Rossini and Donizetti? She is the wobble queen and sounds like she’s hiccuping all over her coloratura.
I’ve seen Miss Meade several times at the Met and at the bel canto festival at Caramoor. I think she’s wonderful. Ok, Anderson and the young Sutherland obviously handled this aria with more dexterity, but she’s still pretty damn good. One always sees the same old Callas Boys screaming about any singers other than their chosen divinities. Who cares? They don’t have children, so they won’t be passing on their crabbiness to the next generation.
My favorite is Leila Cuberli in this aria. She sings it musically and with impeccable style. There are several live performances of this aria as well as duets from live performances from both the MET and from Trieste. Check her out.
Obviously there are people who enjoy her, so let her sing and them enjoy it. But to my personal taste, this is very unpleasant. Musically and artistically. The tone she uses is way to heavy, her voice isn't agile at all, it sounds unnice to me. Surely she has her niche where she shines in. But this is maybe not the right stuff to sing for her. Of course I'm unable to do better or anything near as good as her and certainly she is a nice person and everything. Sure. This is just my opinion as a listener.
La sua mi naturale è veramente notevole. La sua tecnica è particolar, ma qualcuno che riesce a cantare tutto quella fioratura (aspirata o no) e alla fine mette un acuto così, merita di essere apprezzata...punto!
June Anderson is literally 1000 times the Semiramide Meade will ever be. Even now in her Golden years Anderson could put her to shame. This is just foul. It’s clearly not a naturally agile voice (not to this degree) to begin with and my god, the flutter. All I hear is a pushed voice that has been pushed even further. Every time I hear her she sounds worse. I saw her televised Met Audition when she was a student and she sounded promising. What happened? It’s over a decade later and this should be her prime??? I am confusion!
I feel sorry to criticize any singer but this is not good. June Anderson's account of this difficult music is a landmark that all sopranos should try to follow, and this is far from that standard. I do like her, but she should not sing this role.
If I sounded the way you did in the videos you've uploaded to your account, I wouldn't be talking this way about other singers....but that's just me...
No she is not. She has an incredible sense of breath and she never gets “exhausted”. Her voice is enormous that may be the reason you thought so due to the fact that the aria requires an incredible top.
that cadenza was completly out of style and a lot of notes were out of tune in the coloratura....... and a lot of bad taste..... it sounds like a old vinyl recording from 40's or 50's with all the old and bad taste habits that maria callas wanted to erase

Callas did not sing this role.
Do not compare this train wreck to La Stupenda

Do you need to know how to produce cool air to criticize air conditioner not working ?
Angela Meade singing Semiramide is the ultimate proof of MET’s incompetence. Poor Angela and Rossini.
She has to aspirate every note to sing this. Not good colortura.
The aspirations are so noticeable.. that it is impossible to enjoy the performance.. bartoli does not aspirate one single note
@@MrLuis85698 no but bartolli's is not clear enough
Voice pushed, frequently off tune during the coloraturas. No taste in the variations. No elegance. No colours. No emotions.
June Anderson ninguém supera.
Sorry Sutherland was way better than Anderson
I wish I had never seen June Andersen's version, perhaps I would have been more tolerant of this. As it is I'm giggling my head off.
Obviously a very hollow head. No brains inside.

She is definitely not world class. Her coloratura is non existent and there's no emotion or passion in her singing

Chapeau.

It’s no wobble. This is tremolo. Not even a big healthy vibrato. The tremolo affects her so called coloratura too.
The acuti sound like they are squeezed out.
This is just plain horrible. The tremolo in her voice, aspirated coloratura, tasteless ornamentation and a really thin unnecessary high note.
Not as unnecessary as your hateful comment.

Schnee von Gestern she was amazing in that Foscari aria at the gala yrs ago, but for this repertoire, I agree, she doesn’t not sound pretty.

The voice of Miss Meade sounds so good...
Her coloratura is too aspirated and forced for my taste. It lacks the legato grace and ease of Anderson or Sutherland, or more recently, Oropesa.
Gosh, is that Semiramide or the wholeRamide?
