How to make hinges (with simple tools)

- In this tutorial I’ll show you how to make homemade hinges.
This is a simple DIY tutorial and it’s meant for beginners. You don’t need any special tools to make these hinges at home and the process is quite simple.
You can use these hinges for your own "do it yourself" projects like cabinets or other furniture. And if you want you can add some decoration. I used 1 mm steel plate and 4 mm steel rod for the hinge. You can use different material like brass plate or copper rod.
Hope you like it!

MAESTRO!
This is exactly what I needed to complete my portable hiking stove. THANKS SO MUCH!
Sounds like an interesting project and I'm very glad I could help you! Thanks for liking my video, have safe travels!
You are the man! Nicely done, and doubling the sheet metal for the whole hinge instead of just the part the pin goes thru probably makes the entire hinge much stronger!
Haha thank you! Yes it's definately much stronger this way
Great tutorial. Hinge making is useful for that unique situation. Thanks for inspiring me
Yes it's a nice simple project and you can make your own unique hinge for some chest etc. Thank you and glad you liked it
This is smart! Been trying to figure out how to make sterling silver hinges for a coin locket I'm making without useing strip plates and dopping sets that cost thousands. Thanks for this!
That's great to hear! I'm glad I could help you with that project, thanks for liking my video!
This was super helpful, thank you so much! Also loved the soundtrack, perfect fit! Subscribed and excited for more ^^
Thank you so much I'm glad you liked. I usually make armor tutorials, but I'll probably make short tutorials like this and some other craft related too in future :)
Great job!!! 👍😊
The Garage Knight rides again! Great video! Thank you.
Haha thank you! For some reason that reminded me of the old Night Rider theme, don't know why. Glad you liked it!
I LOVE IT!
Thank you!
great video, nice to see another vidéo so quickly
Thank you! I'll try begin another project soon, hopefully I'll finish it quicker than the last one lol
Good job! I see you know how to use your tools.
Beautiful work with hand tools. Thank you.
You're welcome, thanks for watching
Great job man!👍🏻
Thank you!
Thank you so much, I’m currently making a sheet metal cantle lantern amd needed this for the door 👍
You're welcome! Sounds like a great project, glad to help
These are the techniques that a blacksmith must learn and know
Yes this is one basic trick to learn, quick and fun
This is such a good video. I really hope you make more videos some day
This is amazing.
Thank you!
Thanks a lot!
You're welcome, nice to hear that it helped
Your awesome man....helped me out alot
Thank you, glad to help!
Great!
Thank you!
this was very helpful as I needed to research about non-industrial metal processes for my fieldwork, so thanks! on another note, this music really makes it seem like i'm watching a medieval fantasy black smith at their forgery, making weapons, very fitting!
Thank you! Is that for your studies or work related? Glad I could help you with this simple video!
@@GarageKnight Oh thanks for the reply! It's study-related
Nice to be part of it, good luck with your studies!
Can silicon bronze be cold-worked like that, or does it have to be heated to prevent cracking?
Obrigado por ensinar mais uma coisa, adoro seus vídeos.
Obrigado por compartilhar
I had to use google translate but thank you :)
Simple, but great. I actually searched for something like that one day, now i found without searching.
Hah, yeah youtube algorithm at it again. And thank you!
You're the best
Thank you!
Really nice video. This tutorial shows everything you need to know. Only thing i would like to know, how did you cut the 2mm thick part without demaging your shears. I wouldn´t dare to go over 0,8mm with mine.
Thank you! The shears I used have cutting capacity about 1,22 mm (according to manual). But when the steel is folded like here, it's much easier to cut than a solid piece of 2 mm steel. A solid piece of 2 mm steel would be impossible to cut with these. But if you don't want to risk your tools, then an angle grinder with a cutting disc would be best option I think.
Ok thanks :)
FROM ITALY...THANK YOU
You're welcome!
What are the tools pictured? Not handheld, but the table tools?
What was the song used in the video? You liked to the royalty free music site but theres a ton to pour through.
Artist is "Deskant" and song is "sins of the fathers".
Yes loved it, this what I needed to know to make a hispanic replica box... perfect, thankyou so much!
That sounds like an interesting project, glad I could help you with it!
Garage Knight I'll try and remember to post you a pic of the finished job!
@@richblaker9087 Sounds great, I'd like to see it!
"I'm a little bit confused and you might enlighten me, you've worked since 6 A.M, yet such a Small pile of Hinges..."
Amon goeth.
underated comment LOL
Came here because of that particular scene.
Very nice work indeed! The music was correctly selected and not irritating. Just, my vise is broken. I need a new one.
Thank you very much! I know the pain, I broke my vice too, really annoying
@@GarageKnight Mine was just a cheap one. I did not broke it by hammering. It fell down to concrete floor.
Well a good vice should endure if it drops I think, so yeah a cheap one. My vice broke while I was tightening it, maybe too much, won't repeat that mistake.
Very interesting and informative straight to the point film (no wannabe actor flaffing rubbish) Brilliant
Thank you! That's what I try to do, straight to the point
like numero 6
"I'm a bit confused and perhaps you can help me, what I don't understand is that you've been working since about six this morning....yet such a small pile of hinges."
Schindler's list!
@@GarageKnight You're choice of Medieval underscore is unique and effective.
Thank you! I like it too, it's calm and elegant
You push a file, lift, retract and push again to cut. Don’t pull while it’s in contact with the metal.
Yeah that's true for the files with "teeth". I don't know if it's visible in the video but that's a diamond file, which doesn't have teeth, so the direction doesn't matter. Thanks for bringing it up anyway
you've been at it since what, 6 this morning? and all i see is this small pile of hinges :P
Pls make more vids
I have one coming up next week!
its kind of hard to do that when you dont have a clamp or metal lol
Well then you need to start with Primitive technology or some channel like to learn how to make iron with no tools lol
@@GarageKnight lol true
now how to make a circle hinge ?
What do you mean by circle hinge? Is there some specific model you're looking for?
Edit: I got notification that you replied, but I can't see your reply, youtube bugging
@@GarageKnight well i'm tying to make a small mini kettle grill but have no clue how to make it work pic 1 prntscr.com/xvssfo pic 2 prntscr.com/xvszpx and pic 3 prntscr.com/xvt0wa some kind of hinge that i can open it and close it
@@litahsr.8226 Sorry for not answering earlier. For some reason UA-cam had automatically marked your comment as spam so I didn’t see it before. Anyway, I think this hinge should work if you just bend and modify it a bit. Like you see in 3:32, this hinge can fully fold on itself. So, if you would bend the hinges were the rivet holes are and then attach it where your fingers are in pic number 3, it should work. Something like in these pictures: ibb.co/Bnks8bp I drew 2 version of what might work. Either bend them in a small angle or then make two 90-degree bends if needed. But in this case, I think the first version should work. You can make a cardboard mockup of the hinge to see what I tried to tell in those poorly drawn pictures. Hope that helps
@@GarageKnight well from what I've seen on version 2 looks like a great idea but will check both and see what happens thanks 😎
Too much LOUD MUSIC 🎶
Yeah I've been trying to find some tranquil music
