Ok, so im watching this two days after Christmas and got an adrenalin rush because im allowed to think about gardening after Christmas! Lol! Its time to make my seed sowing calendar and start collecting recyclables for winter sowing! Whoop, whoop!
Also, evil mom laugh about gardening while kids are fighting about clean up was great! 😂
😂😂😂 yes, let’s think about gardening!!! And get those kids cleaning!
Exciting to see the plants you picked out and how everything is coming along 😊
I want to fill it all up right away but I know I should take my time with my choices … it’s tough to wait!
Thanks for showing us how you did this! For the longest time I told myself I didn't need drip irrigation, but after the drought last summer, I think I learned my lesson!
It is such a life saver to have drip!
Hey girl! Oak leaf Hydrangeas need to be put in part sun, acidic soil and must be in a moist area, watered daily and given plenty of space. I suggest a short, large raised urn-type container with plenty of drainage (I have moist but not soggy conditions in that area). So, my oak leaf hydrangea is 10 feet tall and 15 feet wide but remember I’m zone 6b (go Huskies + Pucks) this is a plant that grows in my area effortlessly - cool winters, damp spring + irrigation for any drought conditions that occur in summer. They do take a while to establish and need different growing conditions than that large container. Please remove that hydrangea until you decide where to put it - the root system is that of a tree (it spreads its roots outward and forms a tap root) so even if you got it to grow there, it is not the right container for it. As an aside: the hellebores are like old ladies in that they establish their roots, dig them in and will never want to be moved. They become happy where they are and if you move them after they form their root structure you will have an impossible time digging them out without causing damage.
Good to know! I’ll keep an eye out for a container for the hydrangea. I’ve moved other hellebores in the past without an issue but never divided them … I might give it a try anyway as an experiment to share!
My oak leaf is only 5x5, but it’s just a couple years old. Given that you, Mad Gardener, are in a hot spot (TX?), I’d make sure your oak leaf gets afternoon shade. We are in the PNW, zone 8b, and even here it doesn’t love hot sun. It’s a great plant, tho, one of my favorites! Unfortunately mine has never sent out suckers :( I would love to get more for free! Let us know how the hellebore does? I’d love to know!
Looks beautiful 😍
Thank you!
Love the plants, they are going to be amazing in your shade garden. Definitely going to bring some height and texture as well as draping affect over the raised bed. Love the colors and textures.
Thanks!
Another great day ~hearing you giggle ~gardening is fun!
Aww thanks!
Thanks for the video! I am very excited to share your progress with the community
You are so welcome!
Excited to see how the oak leaf hydrangea turns out !
Same! But looks like I might need to move it sooner than later!
I’m jealous you are gardening in December in a t-shirt!😭
It does feel nice!
Amanda I have those same boots and absolutely love them. My dog chewed the top of one but I still wear them. I’m zone 8a in NC.
Aww! I love them too!
Cant wait to see how it evolves.
Same!
I want an oak leaf hydrangea! Painting or staining the fence before things get growing. It's been a mild winter. Knock on wood 😀
Another person suggested that about the fence as well … I don’t actually own that fence but I might ask my neighbors for permission.
Some hellebores will self-sow prolifically. You can remove the seedlings around the mother plants to a more open space, and you’ll have lots of baby hellebores for free! Although hellebores can take a couple of years to really settle in and produce a lot of blooms. Good luck!
Hi Lisa! I would love it if mine self seeded! That would be amazing!
It's really starting to shape up. I see you put a resting chair; it's perfect! Hope you'll keep up updated on the oakleaf. I simply can't get them to grow!
Oak leaf Hydrangeas need to be put in part sun, acidic soil and must be in a moist area, watered daily and given plenty of space. If you have a dry area, keep it in a container (a short, large raised urn-type container) and for goodness sakes, never get any hydrangea at the supermarket. My oak leaf hydrangea is 10 feet tall and 15 feet wide but I’m zone 6b - this is a plant that grows in my area effortlessly - cool winters, damp spring + irrigation for any drought conditions that occur in summer. They do take a while to establish but definitely keep it in a container until you decide where to put it because it will take over the entire area.
@@SharkSandwich451yes they get very large
I did!!! I want something a little more comfortable but this will work for the time being!
I’ll have to make sure to prune this right after blooming to keep it from getting too big … or I wonder if I could train it to be a canopy shape 🤔
I wonder if I can train it regarding size 🤔
I like your plant choices but they seem like an odd mix in that container. I also think the hydrangea will get way too large.
Hi Debbie! Yes some others have said that the oak leaf will get way too big for the container and suggested I find a container for just the hydrangea … I’m going to be on the look out for one!

I can’t wait for them to start filling in!
