Michael Penn was never recognized for his brilliance. Maybe some day he will be, but it's getting dimmer out there. Love you, Michael. You've been a lifelong inspiration to me and I hope one day you get the recognition you deserve.
I attended a Michael Penn/Aimee Mann show at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis years ago. I admire them both. Both deserve more recognition. I put them on the same shelf as Ron Sexsmith and Pernice Brothers, wonderful musicians that the masses never get to check out.
I did the same here in Milwaukee, it was amazing. It was New Year's Eve, and they (for some reason) had a fire eater on stage beforehand, and Aimee slipped on the fuel that he spit out.
Honestly, I don't know how but this song is different. You can feel through the chords. I listen this song daily. It's like time makes me remind to hear this. You don't hear such pop songs daily, I didn't expect it was so great at that time✨🌠
Had the cassettes and wore them out. Bought CDs, then digital downloads. I've sung every song till I had it memorized, only to find new meaning each time. Michael Penn uses language like a painter and music like the pied piper.
Such a great album. Start to finish. I had 3 CDs of this - not copies. Saw his release party at the Viper Room where he played Strawberry Fields. Such a talented artist.
I wonder if Michael Penn appreciates it more 20 years later that he had a music video directed by one of the best living directors, with one of the best actors of all time holding his microphone.
Yes, PT Anderson filmed this while Michael Penn was scoring (and briefly acting in) Boogie Nights. The video is included in the bonus materials on the DVD.
Pt Anderson repertoire players from Boogie Nights..Michael Penn obviously, Phillip Hoffman plays the roadie, Thomas Jane and Melora Walters play the dance contestants and at the end the purple number 9 is an homage to Burt Reynolds, according to PTA. Great video, all in one shot...a must for PTA enthusiasts.
A One Direction ad came on before this song (which still hasn't hit 50,000 views). Just a reminder that I'm blessed to know the overlooked songwriters that corporations tend to ditch in favor of promoting shallow, artificial and contrived amateurs. Don't mean to sound arrogant, that's just how I take it.
This music video made me want to become a filmmaker again. I kept on replaying this music video off of the Boogie Nights DVD over and over again until my mom came in and told me it was noon time and i had to get some sleep, I also had 12 beers in the trash can. I just make videos and all that.
Also contains yet another reference/homage to the 60's TV show "The Prisoner". The door with a "2" on it at the end is definitely a reference to Number 2 . Michael is obviously a fan: the front cover art from "Resigned" is a still image taken from the opening sequence of The Prisoner. Search UA-cam for "The Prisoner - Opening sequence" and freeze-frame it at about 1:30.
More than one take, actually, with slick digital edits to link 'em. One edit's when they rip the white screen with Penn's photo & another when the camera fast whip pans from Penn to the dance marathon. The next time you see Penn he's leaning against the door ont he other side of a red screen - and he's rigged with a bunch of squibs that weren't there in the first half of the video. Same thing in Boogie Nights w/the pool party - right when the camera goes into the water is a digital edit.
After first seeing this video, I remember scouring the internet for that Planet of the Apes ringer t-shirt Phil Hoffman was wearing. May he rest in peace.
+Adalberto Belgardo I looked for the Shirt first before reading the comments. I saw one cheesy looking one...but not looking like the one in the video.. any luck your way?
Awesome. I wish PTA could have fit this into Boogie Nights somewhere, but I suppose I should not think that considering that damn movie is PERFECT. I just love this song though. Michael Penn is so talented, truly underrated musician!
This is a brilliant video...I especially like :52-1:12, reminds me of a graphic novel. You could make an entire movie based on those haunted corporate ghosts.
@ermarauder Maybe you can help me with this one. PT Anderson claims the purple "9" at the 2:46 mark is a homage to Burt Reynolds but did not say why. Do you have any idea?
Theory: Starting at 2:32, there's rain, then a brief spot of nothing, then leaves, then snow. I think there was supposed to be a "summer" in that blank spot, but something went off.
Awesome, Awesome video. But, if I must nitpick.....2:00 mark has shadow reflection of Paul on his dolly looking through his camera....IF I had to nitpick.......
Fantastic song that just endures and endures...unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that the lyrics posted all over the internet are not accurate. I'm not totally sure what the actual lyrics are but the ones that come up on a search seem wrong...
That's the great Melora Walters. She was Jesse St. Vincent in Boogie Nights and one of the leads in Magnolia. I honestly didn't even see Jane at first, but someone mentioned him below and I went back to see where he was. And I'm sure you know the roadie dude is Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Michael Penn was never recognized for his brilliance. Maybe some day he will be, but it's getting dimmer out there. Love you, Michael. You've been a lifelong inspiration to me and I hope one day you get the recognition you deserve.
Aimee Mann recognizes his brilliance!! Lucky dude!
Agree
Without Question a charmed talent and meeting up, collaborating and marrying Aimee Mann, an equal. That’s just a smorgasbord manifest. 🙌🏼🙏🏼👏🏼
absolute subtle brilliance !!!
This is a great song and a great video.
It's too bad Phillip Seymour Hoffman can't be with us today. RIP.
Undiscovered treasure well ahead of the curve
Such an underrated artist.
Absolutely brilliant production by Brendan O'Brien. I think this is his best work.
R.I.P. Philip Seymour Hoffman
PT Anderson directed this.. and just by the style you can tell...
The cinematography has a magnolia or punch drunk love look to
What a great song and album. A stalwart of my music collection through high school. Still holds up today.

This song is the crest of Hauntingly Beautiful

Brilliant artist. That Penn family.
Amazing how Michael kept a straight face with Scotty running in and out of the shot. RIP PSH.
This song deserves more credit
paul thomas anderson directed this music video while editing boogie nights. it was filmed on the longest hallway in north america.
Had the cassettes and wore them out. Bought CDs, then digital downloads. I've sung every song till I had it memorized, only to find new meaning each time. Michael Penn uses language like a painter and music like the pied piper.
This song is the crest of Hauntingly Beautiful...
excellent summation of subtle brilliance !!!
24 freaking years on, I still love this so much
Such a great album. Start to finish. I had 3 CDs of this - not copies. Saw his release party at the Viper Room where he played Strawberry Fields. Such a talented artist.
Dammit all to fuck, I miss Philip Seymour Hoffman. A once in a generation level of ability.
Directed by a master of Cinema
Certainly makes us realize how precious life is seeing Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the sound guy in this video. Much love all!
This song has it all! A true masterpiece of pop rock art! As time has passed, now even the video has revealed some hidden gems of acting talent.
OMG I love that tiny grin he does at the end! I cannot believe I've been listening to this song for almost 20 years.
+Meg DiPaolo Marry me!
Meg, "9"
me too!
Great song, from a great album, from a great musician/songwriter.
An AMAZING, underrated album, Resigned (97) was a Masterpiece.
The 'They shoot horses, don't they?' homage is awesome.
PT must really like that movie or Jane Fonda. Fantastic film!
Michael Penn is a WOEFULLY underappreciated songwriter. It's too bad his last album came out in 2005.
Just came out with a new song!!
@@sharoncole4868 What’s it called? Where can I find it? 😀
@@ImaginarySkyfriend It's called "A Revival" and it's on You Tube

I saw somewhere he was doing music for movies
@@PamSchwetz Yes, I’ve heard that too. I really wish he’d put out an album of new music, though.
Boogie Nights bonus material!
I wonder if Michael Penn appreciates it more 20 years later that he had a music video directed by one of the best living directors, with one of the best actors of all time holding his microphone.
Darth Connery he's the brother of Sean and Chris and the husband of Aimee Mann so he probably already knows them
I mean, this came out the same year as Boogie Nights, which he (Penn) acted in. So I think he had an appreciation of the talent.
Probably was just another day with friends for him.

They Shoot Horses Don't They...
Strong magnolia vibe right there
I remember when this song came out. I loved it! I still do. To this day, I continue to wonder why it never became a hit.
A One Direction ad came on before this song (which still hasn't hit 50,000 views). Just a reminder that I'm blessed to know the overlooked songwriters that corporations tend to ditch in favor of promoting shallow, artificial and contrived amateurs.

such a simple concept...so well executed....damn.
My wife INSISTS this was George Harrison song before I played her this video. Now she just stays in denial.
lol
to be fair, It does have a very Beatles/Harrison/Travelling Willburys/Petty vibe.
She's being a C.....No offense
HEs definately channeling George Harrison and Michael Imperioli too
I hear the Harrison sound. Even hear the Harrison guitar sound in No Myth. Your wife has a good ear but may be stubborn. :)
This music video made me want to become a filmmaker again. I kept on replaying this music video off of the Boogie Nights DVD over and over again until my mom came in and told me it was noon time and i had to get some sleep, I also had 12 beers in the trash can. I just make videos and all that.
Your mommy let you have 12 beers? You're a big boy!
jtjack111 ...she'd already shotgunned the other dozen, that's why.
That's the spirit.
Greatest song and video of all time... and I am a very trying person..
I have a few of his albums don't know how I ever missed this treasure.
I think he is the best looking brother
Thank you DJ Eveready Ed for playing this on KLSX on July 3, 1997!
He was so great live!
Time for a 4k treatment for this music video

Cool tune and video. No Myth is my fave.
thx for posting! Great supplement on the Boogie Nights DVD--P.T.Anderson!!! ;-)

first one is not correct. second one is. but he changed his shirt off cam in every take so that is not why. the pool party is not a cut. 1 outta 3...
My favorite song of al time.
Love this video, Love this song.
Up there, with Brendan Benson. Great work.
Unrated Artist for sure!
Now ask yourself, have you seen the version of this video that came with the CD in the ROM extras?
great song
How is this song not a huge hit.......Oh....almost forgot, it's the end of
Love it!
that little drum break here 0:34 (that occurs at 0:42) is so Ringo-esque.. I love it.
The whole song feels so Beatle-eske.
Michael Penn is the Lou Gehrig of pop consistency!
It’s crazy how much Phil hoffman is actually acting his ass off in this
Perfection
Perfect.

I always thought Melora Walters was pretty cute. Thomas Jane's a good actor. He should get cast in more roles. The Mist was the shit!
I´m crazy for her in Boogie Nights
that awkward moment when you find a singer that has the same first and last name as you

@guydandy1 Burt Reynolds played football at Florida State University. He wore #9.
the bg vocal on the track at that moment is burt r in an interview saying 'i've been down... so many times..' right before 'NINE!'
Theory: Starting at 2:32, there's rain, then a brief spot of nothing, then leaves, then snow. I think there was supposed to be a "summer" in that blank spot, but something went off.
Pretty good song. Not my favorite kind of music, but I respect this guy and the work of his brothers (minus Sean Penn's politics).
Directed by PTA.

What’s scary for me, is that I didn’t discover this song from No Myth for over 30 years. What a waste of time.
3 words...PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON
Hell yeah man!!!
This song is VERY Brendan O'Brien-y.
I assume the "#2" door at the end ties in with the Resigned/Prisoner theme of the album cover art?
Howdy!
pretty sure there's a They Shoot Horses Don't They, reference in here too
Yes! At 1:55

Sounds so Beatles like
he's like an older more masculine version of timothee chalemet.
He was influenced bigly by the beatles especially by harrison. He even sound like him.
he doesn't try crossdressing. he didn't try it, how did he not know?
