Advent Calendars 2023 Day 13 | Ashens & Nerdcubed

- The remnants of a shattered civilization whispered of a cautionary tale - a stark reminder that truth, once distorted, could unravel even the most stable foundations of society. In the deafening silence that followed the collapse, the echoes of a misguided reliance on a machine lingered, a haunting refrain in the annals of history.

The military men calendar is so powerful that the toy dog summoned a real dog
It is a boner of a calendar that even the toy dog got balls of steel
Cant wait for it to summon a real military man on a dirt bike
@@marcusfridh8489 There's a sentence I never thought I'd read.
Doggie!
That dog was great lol
The cheese calendar gave Dan lactose intolerance, the puzzle calendar is giving him super 3d vision.
I've been watching a playthrough of "Sam & Max: The devil's toybox". In it, Max gets magical powers from certain toys. I bet this is what's happening to Dan, except the powers are crap (quite literally, in the case of the cheese advent calendar)
i wonder what powers he's getting from the only fools and horses advent calendar, maybe cardboard intolerance
@@Senor_Gagoprobably face blindness.
@@benedictrogers1478 Prosopagnosia to balance out the super 3d vision.
The shitty tat calenders giveth, and the shitty tat calenders taketh away.
Slight color-blindness on one eye
In 2019 Dan learned he's lactose intolerant because of advent calendars.
In 2023 he learned he's colourblind
The funniest thing about these calendars is that a friend of mine’s daughter is opening the same Barbie calendar and I can’t help but cry laughing whenever I see it
How is she finding it? 😂
does it have numbers on the box or is it genuinely supposed to be just open whatever
@@ellegarret haven’t got the heart to ask her 😭😭😭
@@Senor_Gago her one actually has numbers
@@Senor_Gago There are two versions, completely identical except for the numbers, and the one without numbers is just called a surprise box or somesuch. Funnily enough, a lot of the one without numbers' reviews complains about it not having numbers on it.
Anytime Dan says something new about his eyesight, I am more impressed and afraid
The fact that he can see at all is impressive at this point
I'd love to see what his prescription is, as mine is pretty bad as well. I'm like -6.25 in both eyes.
@@blobbem He mentioned it once in one of the podcats
There is a slight difference in colour perception between my eyes. One sees warmer colours than the other. Even then you can only notice it in bright light and if you cover each eye in turn.
@@ukar69 I swear mine does that too. It's subtle though.
Yep Dan is definitely thanking his lucky stars that exercise calendar went missing.
That's what day 24 is going to be, just Dan working out the entire day
@@TheInfamousCloakerlol. Hes far too lazy
Coincidence or foreshadowing?
Bring back the cheese advent calendar! Show Dan's lactose intolerance (caused by said calendar) who's boss!
@@hotlavatube Or the German spices calendar.
Or both, at once xD
I think the audience won today, we got to see two dogs, one plastic and one adorable!
I like how this has devolved from "Who will win?" to "Can Dan make it a draw instead of losing?"
That chair for the dragon is like the jedi council seats from the phantom menace for some reason.
In eyes of Stuart, that would probably make it worse by reminding him of the prequels.
I thought it would be a good basket for scruffy if he articulated
"Tomorrow ever dies" for the PS1 had a skiing level as did the "World is Not Enough" for PS1.
TWINE was also on N64. The little brother of Goldeneye that everyone forgets about even though it was superior in many ways.
@@SimplebutsandyGiven I grew up in a non-Nintendo house, TWINE was the closest I got to playing GoldenEye for ages, and I really liked it! It had some neat moments.
I also think the poorly received '007 Legends' may have had a ski level based upon OHMSS.
Yes it did
@@Simplebutsandy N64 TWINE is so much better than the PS1 version, it's not even funny. Not surprising though...
How nice of the Barbie calendar to provide a dog bed for Scruffy!
If the exercise calendar was still in this dimension Dan would end being either dead or the strongest man on earth by the end of this
One punch man origin story 😂
The exercise calendar went to the Berenstein dimension where Dan didn't get lactose intolerance from the cheese advent calendar.
Remember when Matilda was a little puppy that could fit in Dan's Lego city?
From "Do you want to see a little puppy!?" to knocking over a chirstmas tree. Well done, Matilda.
Matilda nearly knocking over the tree felt like that jurassic park scene where all the trees move when the t rex is coming
Stuart revealed a fake plastic dog but Dan showed off a real dog. I propose Dan wins this one.
Stuart: opens dog
Dan: opens dog bed
Stuart: proceeds to test if a military man from an earlier day fits
Me: °________°
Pleased to see Fluffy the anatomically correct dog won against the Barbie offering 😂
Matilda showing up the same day the army dog shows up is a nice coincidence.
Nothing says Christmas more than Dan getting horribly maimed by Advent Calendar TAT. 🎄
If the Only Fools calander had a separate sound button just for today featuring Boycie's laugh it might have been able to redeem itself!
The dog knew Ashens got a dog today.
Dan without glasses looks like a guy who'd silently cry if he dropped his ice-cream
yes Dan, being able to see "more" or "less" colours between eyes is normal. In some people it can appear to be "brighter" or "darker" depending on the eye too. Sometimes it's a fractional difference to the point where it's not noticeable. It becomes more noticeable with age because the lenses of the eye do start to "yellow" or whatever the technical term for that is.
It doesn't have to be an age thing. I was a teenager when I first noticed the exact thing Dan talks about, where the world looks slightly blue-tinted through one of my eyes, and slightly red-tinted through the other. My wild-ass guess, it's caused by a slightly different density of cones attuned to each of those primary colors that developed in each eye.
Or you can be colourblind like me 😭
@@abdulmasaiev9024 He only said it becomes more noticeable with age, not that you need to already be aged to have the condition.
Yeah one eye for me seems to render colour brighter than the other but the differences between each eye seem to become moot with them both open, it's interesting.
@@md_vandenberg ...yes? But his proposed mechanism for why it even happens was purely age related. I proposed a non-age related one.
That dog must be from the same mold as a toy my friend got in an action figure set back in 1999. We were even less mature about the anatomy than Dan was here. Good times.
I really appreciate the dedication of them wearing the same shirts 13 days in a row! Men of honour they are!
How do you know they wore them on Day 2 and Day 3?
I think the experience Dan is describing where reds and blues shift at different rates as he turns his head is an effect of wearing glasses. I experience the same thing. The different light colors offset slightly differently when passing through the lens and it gets more dramatic near the edges where the lens is thicker.
Yes, it's called chromatic aberration, and the fact Dan sees it already tells me (who also sees it) how severe his prescription must be. 🤓
@@kelvinc Thank you. I thought there was a term for it but couldn't remember what it was.
Yes, it's the UV coating on the glasses! When I was a kid my glasses didn't have the color separation until later when UV protection was introduced. I'm glad Dan brought it up because no one ever talks about it but it''s an everyday thing for us glasses users.
Yeah, this is called chromatic aberration. It's frequently observed as a result from viewing sideways through lenses, either glasses or something like a magnifying glass or even a VR headset. It can also be a problem (or desirable effect, depending on who you ask) in photography.
If Dan's optometrist doesn't know what chromatic aberration is, it might be time to find a new doctor.
Hi Matilda!
The slow burn of the short story told through the descriptions building up to something, only for it to be revealed as an AI fabrication is not the dark gut punch I was expecting this advent.
When Dan asked for dramatic music, the first thing that popped in my head was the music for Sonic running out of air, which I believe would have induced the same panic I always felt as a teen when I heard that.
Dog vomit would probably be a pretty good upgrade for Dan's calendars.
Dan’s 13-year-old joy of marvelling at the toy dog’s manhood 😂😂😂😂
There are skiing segments in Yoshi's Island. And I can't believe they didn't give the bed to Scruffy. Clearly it's the perfect size for a minuscule German Shepherd.
The trouble is he won't lie down in it!
I also remember a skiing level in the NES Mission Impossible game because you can play it for hours and not beat it. That's pretty much the entire game.
Dan's weird eyesight might be explained by his glasses.
Different wavelengths of light are distorted different amounts when travelling through glass, which can result in some colour splitting for thick glasses(or looking through glasses on a weird angle like when he turns so the source is in his periferal vision).
It's the same way prisms cause spectral lines(the light distorts different amounts based on the colour). There's no getting around the issue because bending light is exactly why glasses work, so bending the light less to minimise the effect would also render the light focusing effect of glasses useless too.
I suggest Dan try to see if he can replicate the effect without glasses and, separately, contact lenses. Without glasses will likely remote the effect altogether, and contact lenses being closer to the eye will likely minimised the observed portion of the effect(it'll still happen, just be less noticeable).
My eyes do the same thing, I haven't checked if it's more noticeable with glasses on but it definitely happens without them.
Agree, I also see the blue/red shift WITH my glasses, it's only at the edges of the lenses though. I do however concur about seeing colors different between my eyes, my eyes each see off white as slightly different colors when I close one or the other eye.
Loved Matilda's cameo.
With those 3D Glasses on, Ashens could play Rufus in the English version of William and Edwards' most Exciting Adventure!
I am pretty sure it's not true but I like telling people that Bill and Ted was the end result of a very wild and loose localization process to bring Doctor Who to an American audience.
I was nearly sure Dan will cry today, he seemed so defeated, then he opened his callendars and it got worse and then started talking about his eyesight.
Add "Steep" to the skiing game list. Although roaming the mountains with the paraglider is the best bit.
Stuart almost had it with his advent calendar good boi, but I have to give the win to Dan today for his REAL pupper. What a nose! 13/10 would boop.
I'm with you Dan, my eyes see slightly different colors. One sees more blue and the other sees more red. It's only occasionally visible for me but it's there.
PVC and cardboard, my favourites!!!
The amount of random and cool stuff that happens and is said in this episode is a good metaphor for my ADHD brain.
There's a Bubba/Bully Ray Dudley vibe to Dan's face when the glasses come off which I'd never noticed before.
Look Dan, Look with your special eyes!
I named my Dog "Shyly". Because when I went to the pound, I was told she would NOT approach Anyone and hid in the corner shaking and scared but when she saw me, she v a r y s l o w l y a n d s h y l y Approached me and sat on my foot and Vary Slowly waged her tail, looking up at me with Vary Sad Eyes... She was going to be put down in two more days, no one wanted her because her left eye bulges and she was Abuse.. It's why she didn't approach anyone. She was Scared! So her name is "Shyly"... So that is a Wonderful Name... And OMG HUGE Spoiled Baby/BRAT, always has to Touch me and is VARY Protective of me...
And she deserves every bit of that spoiling. ❤️
@@mgthestrange9098 Yes, Yes dose. Makes me Laugh and Smile Everyday. Holds ME like a Child at night. Talks to me everyday with different "Yawns", specially that She loves me. And somehow can even Pure ( on the exhale ) like a cat. And needs to be held during a Thunderstorm. And needs to have just a Bit of what I am having to eat, specially if I go out to eat, she has to have something.
I Only brought all this up because they mentioned Stuff about naming animals and I Love talking about her. Don't get me started on my First one before her, Rufus... Loved him just as much and still tell him everyday I love him.
2 doggies in one video. Blessed 🙏
Lets see Dan rig the calendars next year to win a lot more
He's tried a couple of times, it never works. It's like a running gag at this point.
@@Chaos89P2019 was one of the most infamous times - he basically set up Stuart to lose with a Funko Pop Fortnite calendar, only for his own calendar to backfire so badly that he still lost massively anyway. And ended up having to eat lots of hot German spices, raw, with a massive mouth ulcer to boot. xD
@@HeyItsAJOmega After then, and the next year, you think he'd learn.
Next year, he’ll just buy some kind of food calendar, but he’ll poison it. Then accidentally end up with the poisoned one for himself.
@leonb8991 So another cheese calendar then...
there are 2 bond games with skiing, tomorrow never dies and 007 legends
Ashens look cool AF with those glasses
as soon as Nerd pulled out the pet bed, I was practically shouting "PUT THE DOG IN IT!!" at the screen.
The PS1 Tomorrow Never Dies game had TWO skiing sections
Wow Dan has in-built 3D glasses
Oh Ashens got a good boy. He has to win this week
I can't believe the day featuring a doggo has another surprise appearance by another doggo!
To borrow a British phrase, that military calendar is the dogs bollocks! Incidentally, missed opportunity to give the Barbie pet bed to the military dog.
Horace goes skiing - what a reference! That game must be about 40 years old.
6:50 Dan thanks for bringing up the chromatic aberation thing us glasses users deal with. Even if we don't know what it is, it certainly is a thing and no one talks about even though I know we're all seeing it.
Secret Agent Clank had snowboarding, but not skiing.
I think most games that could have had skiing levels opt instead for snowboarding because it's "cooler", and also characters have hands free to do various acrobatic or combat manoeuvres.
Midwinter on the Atari ST/Amiga had a skiing activity to move from place to place on the map.
Midwinter was ridiculously ambitious for the time, a fully 3D open world action game released in 1990.
Aw, that's a cute dog!
This was the best episode so far! It really picked up halfway through when they started talking about literally anything other than the calendars!
Stuart's advent calendar really is the dog's bollocks
Dan's Super 3D-vision made the Military Men toy dog come alive.
Honestly for a sec there I was starting to think they were just trolling us on the existence of a dog there until the tree nearly _died_
7:20 it'll be the lenses in your glasses distorting the main wavelengths of light differently. I get the same thing with red in my peripheral vision. If I look at the YT logo and then turn my head so it's in my periphery, it'll look like the arrow has moved to the left or right of the rectangle, but it has to be on solid colour.
"it does, you berk!"
berk needs to be used more
Dan I had faith in your puzzle skills!
Love to see you two do a BEER calendar. If we have them here in Milwaukee, you all should have them. On second thought maybe make it a prize.
I'm not sure either of them drink
@@kkryder9176Dan doesn't. Not sure if Stuart doesn't though.
Don't know if they do or don't. But just the thought of both of them trying to go through 25 beers in one day, just might be fun.@@kkryder9176
I don't know if it's a thing, Dan, but I have the same thing. I have my "sees warm colors" eye and my "sees cold colors" eye. The cold colors eye also has just slightly sharper vision.
Sounds similar to mine.
It's most noticeable with greens on pines and other trees.
Cute puppy cameo!
Omg! The different color thing with different eyes is something I have! I thought i was going nuts. If I look at someone with blue eyes with one eye I see them as blue and with the other eye I see them as green. When I try to focus and use both eyes I see them with one blue eye and one green eye. Wow.
Excellent accidental Spider Jerusalem cosplay from ashens there
Medal of Honor: Above & Beyond Mission 5 is a ski mission, then there is 007: Tomorrow Never Dies Mission 7 and Battlefield V ski mission.
Naughty Dogs second game (1986) was Ski crazed for the Apple II.
Alpine Racer!
Massive arcade cabinet that literally just lets you ski.
Definitely been James Bond games that had skiing in them. I believe 007 nightfire had some skiing, back in the PS2 and Gamecube era
I think the featureless white lump would make a good dog bath or bowl.
The weird thing is I know exactly what Dan is talking about because I've had the exact same thing since childhood. If I look at striaght up white out of one eye, it's red tinged, and the other, blue tinged. When I was a kid I thought 3D glasses had broken my eyes after wearing a pair for a day emulating the guy from Zombies Ate My Neighbors.
Matilda heard there was another dog in the room and had to come investigate! 😂
I see sliiiiightly different colors like Cubed! Never met anyone who had it too! Neat! (It’s just slightly different, not major)
Merry Christmas!
Dan, I have the same thing with my eyes. My right sees things as slightly more red than my left does
The Long Pin on each slides into the other
I'm with you, Dan - my left eye is slightly more red, and my right eye is slightly more blue. Other than that I have perfect vision
I actually can name a non-skiing game with skiing in it. Ape Escape on PS1, it had an unlockable skiing mini game that was hard as fuck because you controlled the left and right ski's individually with left and right joy sticks.
That Frogger 3D game for PS1 and PC had a skiing level!
The thing with the colours seperating is called chromatic aberration. It will happen more depending on the strength of your glasses, like Dan I'm very short sighted so I also get the colours seperating when looking through my glasses at an angle.
Tomorrow never dies has a sking level
I get that blue/red separation while turning my head with, lights and such. It's just the prism my -6 glasses make. I'm not mad!
I get the blue and red separation but I always figured it was because the glass in my glasses was refracting different wavelengths of light differently across the think lenses - it is obnoxious on LED screens, if I am not looking directly at them the red and blue all smears to the side. I had a friend with similarly thick glasses look at a string of RGB LEDs set to a purple and when she moved her head from side to side the individual red and blue LEDs could be clearly seen separating from each other.
Yes, it's the UV coating on the glasses I think! When I was a kid my glasses didn't have the color separation until later when UV protection was introduced. I'm glad Dan brought it up because no one ever talks about it but it''s an everyday thing for us glasses users.
That puzzle is so easy that you can actually solve it just by holding it from one end, and wiggling the loose one.
I too, have a slightly blue tinted eye, and slightly red/pink tinted eye!
That eyes seeing slightly more red in one eye and more blue in another has to be a thing because I also have that and now no longer feel crazy hearing someone else have it
speaking about seperating colours, a shop i visit often has some purple LEDs on the wall but if i look at them from behind the support pillar, they're seperately red and blue. i tried getting mum to do it but she thought i was mad.
I saw Matilda knew she's a gshep then hit like faster than the infinity stone powered flash
'It's a weird long one', as the actress said to the Bishop.
The fact that we're at the part of advent now where they ain't focused on the calendars since they're so shit and we're learning interesting things about Dan's vision
Awwwwww such a cute doggy ❤❤❤ The end has changed 😅
"Play along at home"
Thank you I will.
The resolution/compression made that impossible.
5:17 it is, its to do with the division of cells being uneven, its also an indicator you'll need glasses at some point.
It could ALSO only be for kids who had stereoscopic red blue glasses and wore them for stupidly long hours.
My obstetrician said the same thing when I complained that some lenses make me see more red and some make me see more blue but neither are better. 🤷🏼♀️
This just in, dan is pre-3D ready
