    This is a different kind of video for me. It’s less of a writing lesson than it is a reading lesson, or even a living lesson. It’s me working through the familiar feeling of frustration I’ve felt in the past when watching a beloved story decline before reaching the end, and an exercise for getting around that.
    So yeah, lets talk about Game of Thrones season seven.

      Personally, I'm all in for self contained stories. If it were up to me, that would be one of my solutions for the teleportation issues. Have a certain group of characters stick more or less to their locations and direct environment with them only having to travel a long distance once at max. It is one of the few things I liked about the 'Winterfell' scenario this season and the 'Sam at the Citadel' story.

      Jon, Dany and Cersei get stab in the back the first stupid decision they make, leaving background characters to fend for themselves. Any character still willing to adapt to the ever changing circumstances escape to the Free Cities and Westeros is overtaken by the Others. Azor Ahai never comes because the legend was meant for a different time period.

      I'd have the entire world slowly decay, with constantly having tiny hopes of it getting well, which constantly gets diminished.
      The series ends with everyone dead, the world in snowy chaotic death, and a heroic last stand by.. like... well Jon snow or someone who's been there from the beginning. Sort of like the ending of the two towers, but there's no happy ending. So the catharsis of the entire series would be that all this lying, bickering and backstabbing ultimately will only lead to the end of humanity, leaving the most honest and truly strong as a last survivor destined to see the suffering of all other people.
      The best stories rarely end happily, so I'd be sad to see GoT doing so

      Hey, Just Write uhm... Person. I wrote the following passage for an online forum some days ago. I'd really love to hear your thoughts on this:
      "Martin is good in creating a world, he is good in creating characters and he is good in writing single scenes. But he is bad as shit in telling a coherent story. In that respect he is not unlike Gene Roddenberry.
      There is one important rule when it comes to telling a story: Everything has to serve the plot. If I recall correct Hemingway phrased it somewhat like this: The quality of a story is measured by the amount of really good material that didn't make the cut.
      Martin doesn't write like this. It's pretty obvious that every time he gets stuck he just falls back on what he does well: He creates a new aspect of the world or a new character. But - kill me if you like - I'm pretty sure he himself had/has at best a vague idea how the story will go forward, how the story will end. And because of this all these new elements don't actually serve the story.
      This is what bites the show in the ass right now. That it had to become more positive had to be expected. It's a necessary consequence coming with the three arc structure. But that the writing itself is so fucking weak is not because of the weak writing now, it's because of the weak writing all over the years. There are tons of stuff with no purpose and the audience demands a resolution for every single one of these characters, arcs and things. This is what's fucking things up now...
      BTW, I bet this is why Littlefinger's end was so underwhelming in the show. They had simply nothing they could do with him anymore. During season seven they used him to have at least some sort of plot in Winterfell. Besides "Oh, what is Littlefinger doing now?" there is not really much going on there. But this is going to change in season eight and so they simply decided to kill him off now. He had no further use in terms of storytelling."

The characters die and get resurrected so many times that I can't believe anyone even cares anymore. It was already a longtime joke that Sam and Dean die so often and come back to life just as often, yet none of the fans who make that joke ever seem to understand that it destroys all tension and any possibility that we could get any truly final end to the characters. Because at this point, NOBODY will believe that this is the last time they die.

    the reason why Tyrion, Little finger and Varris are ruined now is simple, they are too smart and for the show writers to write for, all the finer details like growing consequences, geography and time have been lost because the writers are either incentivised to streamline the plot and make it more of a spectacle, sacrificing nuance, or they are just not competent enough

      if you see the achivements of DBweiss before GoT you will find nothing. He was a total failure. and Benihoff had just small stuff. the only reason they did a good job is because they inherited money from their parents and had GRRM.

    • @exhermit
      @exhermit 5 років тому +78

      D&D aren’t GRRM. Simple. They don’t have the mind to create the kind of depth, intricacy and world building and complexity that they took from George.
      Varys was my favourite character, but for past several seasons, he’s been a mute on display for the sake of it. Utterly dissapointing. That’s only scratching the surface.
      While I’m sad to see the show end, I’m happy D&D will finally let go. Here’s to hoping the prequel show will be written by a dedicated, passionate writers room, and not two fanfic writers with zero experience in the kind of epic that GoT should have ended being.

      Similarly, they liked Stephen Dillane's "f**k the world" face, so they changed his storyline to put him in as many situations as they could where he'd be disappointed and show this off. Dillane even said in an interview that he had no idea why his character did the things he did. Minnie Mouse or maybe it's just because it's kind of harder to wrap up the several story lines and characters thrown on them by GRRM(who clearly had no end sight for all of them) as the series reaches its climax.

      This would be relevant if the story in the show wasn't an extremely dumbed down version of the book. The show has nowhere near as much complexities and story threads as the book. So they don't have the same excuse that GRRM has.
      This is an issue of Dan and David being bad writers.

    • @patrickgourley2965
      @patrickgourley2965 7 років тому +8

      John Doe I guess we'll have to wait and see.
      If GRRM had some master plan on how to finish, for example, Littlefinger's story, I think he would have told D and D rather than let them dispatch the character in the way they did.
      A lot of the bad writing mistakes will probably pop up in the books as well. Obviously Martin's won't be as bad since he created the story and has had a general idea of how things would pan out in his head since the start, but I think it's unfair to blame everything on D and D

    • @JohnDoe-gn3yc
      @JohnDoe-gn3yc 7 років тому +56

      +John Smith
      The problem with that is that the show adapted some things in its own ways by changing up what characters are doing and where they are. This turns into a butterfly effect where after a couple of seasons of all these changes and divergences, the characters in the book and the characters in the show have such vastly different arcs that the storyline of one can't be adapted into the other anymore. I mean this especially for supporting/minor characters like Littlefinger.
      The only real thing that I can see GRRM being able to give them is a general path from point A to point B with general paths for main characters like Jon/Dany/Tyrion with D&D then figuring out the journey. And honestly, this isn't as bad as it sounds considering the show is significantly less layered in complexities than the books, which would mean that writing that journey would be easier.
      What makes me think D&D are bad writers is how God awful and nonsensical they managed to make that journey. I didn't expect a masterpiece story, not because of D&D, but because it's an adaptation from book to tv. But what I did expect was for the show to keep its standards. I expected characters to act in a way that makes sense and I expected the general realism present in the earlier seasons to also remain.
      Which is why I think D&D are garbage writers. They failed on all those fronts. It's like they're completely ignorant of what made Game of Thrones so successful.

    • @Steelrat1994
      @Steelrat1994 7 років тому +73

      In the behind the scenes of the awful episode s07e06 there is a moment when some of the D's says: 'We always wanted to make a zombie bear. Oh my god how cool that would be. But every season we couldn't because our budget wasn't big enough. And now we were finally able to do THE ZOMBIE BEAR'. Which clearly shows how much they care about doing things that 'look cool' on the screen. Imo that's exactly the reason why the story is so daft in the last few seasons. They are focusing on 'doing cool stuff on the screen' instead of writing a complex and clever story. And for me - action scenes are not the reason I loved the GoT. It's the mindgames and cleverness. A whole lot of moral dilemmas, complexity of 'the right choice' and others. The deconstruction of the most common fantasy tropes. And what do we have now? The most common fantasy tropes. Yay.

The books will head this way too. The fact that people are suprised by this is more shocking than season 7 being rushed. Yeah it sucks tbe political games and in fighting is not around as much, but all things come to and end to reach the true end. Everyone will see this when the next book comes out.
      The difference is the books have a million pages to fit things inbetween. A show does not. That's what people refuse to understand. You can fill a show with these things leading to an end, but you can't keep inserting them at the big end. This show had 6 amazing to very good seasons. As I said, one rushed season 7 doesn't cancel that out nor does it mean 8 will suck.

    • @el34glo59

      @@Edd_LShore Season 7 was rushed. Hands down. They knew it too and went ahead anyway. No excuse. I don't think they realized just how bad until it was on screen though. And I think they'll learn from it. So I'm not giving them a pass there but I think they toll 2 years for season 8 for reason. To get it right after what they did with 7.
      Whats pissing me off is people saying it's been shit since GRRM left. Or that the show has turned into shit. One frigging season doesn't turn a show into crap. I can't stand that stuff about how it's turned into fan fiction or Marval. Which is hilarious btw considering the worst of GOT is written better than a Marval movie.
      Or how about how D&D can't write and are clowns? Oh really? So seasons 1-6 were just shit then? People do realize they had to adapt the books right? And they do realize how hard that is and that these guys knocked it out of the park. I mean the show is amazing from top to bottom. Never been anything like it. And people call them morons. These fans come off like fucking spoiled brats or entitled morons who think they're smarter than they are.
      These guy adapted the first 4 seasons brilliantly. They also added and wrote the hound chicken scene. The Arya cup bearer scenes. Hardhome played out in screen. And changed other things for the better.
      Then they did season 5, which is very dark and underrated minus Dorne, and season 6 which imo is one of the best seasons. They knew the direction they were going that season and crushed it.
      Were they perfect? No, but no one is nor is going to be with a show of this magnitude. All I think is how silly this show could have been in someone else's hands. I mean it could have been absolutely terrible. And meanwhile we get something close to a masterpiece and people say it went to shit because of one rushed season and call the runners morons
      It gets old man. Really fast. I mean here is a video talking about it. How bad it is. Like wtf? One season does not cancel out 6 previous ones. Nor does it mean the show has become anything. Season 8 could be absolutely brilliant and make everyone forget about season 7. Will that still mean the show has become fan fiction? Nope. People will call it a transition season or something. Just annoying.
      BTW, the story is headed this way as anyway. I've said before and everyone will realize that when the book comes out. I'm sure they'll make an excuse for GRRM though. Who has also written some shit at times btw.
      The show was never going to be the same after all the deaths. It was never going to be the same once it got serious about the White Walkers. And the books won't be either. The difference is GRRM takes frigging decades to write his books, and they're books, and these guys have a year to do it and it's a show.
      Like to the people complaining about it turning to everyone vs the Walkers, where have you been for the previous 6 seasons prior to 7? They've been hinting at it since season 1. The story can't go on forever. Don't take it out on the show because you're pissed that it's ending.

    The way GoT is crumbling does make you understand why George R.R. Martin may be taking *so long* to finish ASOIAF. He has the same pressure about breaking stereotypes and tropes while delivering an enjoyable experience and story to close the arcs of all of the characters we know and love (or hate), S7 is an example of why he may want to take his time with it (not to mention now he has the advantage of watching what D&D made and how everyone reacted to it, so he has the chance to avoid making the same mistakes)

      "everyone" is a strong word its still a vocal minority. Plus sure its not as amazing anymore but its still the best show by a mile. Also a lot of people with their complaints seem to not understand that its wrapping up. An example of that is when they complain about it being predictable. A lot of that is a good thing it means its paying off stuff instead of pulling trash out of left field that had no lead up just to get reactions.

      Neoshenlong Archivo 2008 - 2011 I don't know if he can avoid the same mistakes. I'm always forced to draw parallels between King's "Dark Tower" series and ASOIF. A strong start which turns into a bloated meandering world building journey that is finally completed because he must, but without having given the story any real thought. Maybe if the authors thought more about how they wanted to end the story and how to write it, they wouldn't struggle so much completing their masterpieces.

      Well we've known for a while that the story of ASOIAF was already decided, as George R.R. So in this case is more about the in-between, not where they arrive but how they get there.

    • @mordirit8727

      I really don't see this as something like The Dark Tower, I actually see the Dark Tower as the polar opposite of ASoIaF.
      King managed to give deep meaning and connections to every event in all seven books, leading to a very satisfying ending with not that much effort, specially because after coming back with Wolves of Calla he just let the story flow, with the very good 3 books in 2 years rhythm.
      I fear that unless Martin decides to let the story happen instead of spending hundreds of pages on events and characters that he later kills leaving no development to the world or story whatsoever, ASoIaF won't be able to do what the Dark Tower did.
      For example, as much time as was spent developing the life of the servants of the King, I was never satisfied in Dark Tower, because it never felt overexplained and kept you curious for more; on the other hand, we have the atrocious Brienne chapters that slog through hundreds of pages, just to end with nothing ever being achieved, all those chapters serving only the purpose of giving us some three or four descriptions of how people feel about the war and some eighty descriptions of different meals they had along the way. You could cut it down to her leaving with Pod, then being taken by Stoneheart and it would have achieved the exact same story purpose.

    they went from a character driven story to a plot driven story. no one's choices, actions, or beliefs were in character, all because the writers just wanted to rush the story along. it sucks because the plot leaks made it seem like season 7 would be the most exciting season yet, and it would have been had the writers followed martin's approach. hopefully these issues won't be present in the final season

      I completely agree, but sadly I don't see it getting better. You can immediately see the transition when they run out of source material. The farther away from GRRs work they get, the worse it gets. All the cliche's, the lazy manufactured drama, the out of character actions (ie. plot driven as opposed to character driven), immediately popped out of the wood work. I swear they have some sort of 'lazy screenwriter class' that every Hollywood screen writer is force to take, because they all seem to do the same boring crap.
      I think the most obvious, and depressing part, was watching what they did to the clever/smart characters like Tyrion, Varas, or Baelish. In previous seasons (in particular 1-4) They had long interesting talks, constantly testing and probing each other, with layers, competing with each other in words. It was amazing, and so different and refreshing. Its completely lost. Tyrion's dialog is now laughably bad, Varas has all but disappeared from the show getting less screen time than most extras, and Baelish killed off without even an explanation or hint to his larger plan. From the beginning his plan was to somehow win the Iron Throne (remember the absolutely awesome 'chaos is a ladder speech'), and after 7 seasons we don't even get a conclusion, just 'sorry you're dead now'. Are you kidding me!!??

    You know what I miss? The dialogues. Man, they were the best. That's game of thrones, the characthers had so much depth. Especially those so interesting like Tyrion, Varys, Littlefinger and Jaime. It was genius. There was no black and white, good or bad. It's more complex than that. Now they became so... shallow. And also always had a pause to contemplate the things that happened, not only characther's contemplation but ours too and this was the time for dialogues to shine. And I don't think it's a problem to do that now bc it has less episodes, cause there were a lot of "useless" stuff that didn't added anything for characther development or plot. What was that fight between Arya and Sansa?! I like the idea of them fighting and realizing they've changed but for god's sake, it was so poorly executed. Bassically before you didn't realized where the story would go cause immerses you with the screenwriting, now they say some non-sense and you understand why and where the writers wanna go with it. Sometimes the pace seems so slow and exhausting and other times it's so fast and inconsequent that you don't even know what is happening. GOT will still be my favorite TV show, but it's sad to see the quality of something so amazing go to something so mediocre.

      I really hope they will do stuff a bit different in the 8th season.

    I definitely agree with the lack of consequences. The shock value of GoT has been gone for a while now. We KNOW John Snow will be fine, at least until the absolute finale when it really doesn't matter whether he lives or dies or not. We KNEW he'd survive being pulled into the frozen lake. We KNEW Jamie Lannister would survive falling into the sea with FULL PLATE ARMOUR on. We KNOW Danearys will survive and become Queen eventually. Where is the intrigue now? Where is the risk taking as far as writing goes? Watch the Red Wedding episode and watch a Season 7 episode right after. Different show entirely, right?

      I felt zero tension the entire season because I knew everyone would be totally fine. I knew that they weren't going to kill off Jon Snow by having him drown in a fucking lake one season before the series ends so I just didn't care about anything that was happening in that situation.
      They've reached Marvel level of tension and danger. 75 undead dragons could dive out of the sky at Danny and I wouldn't hesitate to go take a piss because I know she's going to magically be fine somehow

      A lot of that is true of the Books. Once i figured who Jon was I knew he wouldn't die. Danearys had so much plot armour it was visible from space. I got 3/4s of the way through Storm of Swords and gave up. I may read it all once GRR finally finishes the books but until then... On Littlefinger, I thought he had to die. Events were out of his control, he was to compromised, so if he didn't get it by then it would have been stupid.

    • @TheEtherny
      @TheEtherny 6 років тому +9

      Lack of consequence doesn't equal shock value, Daenery's doesn't need to die as long as she doesn't go full mad queen, she's been evolving accordingly to her situation:
      Sold for an army? she creates a title for herself and takes the army to get her kingdom back!
      As for Jon I do agree he's been given a few passes, the fact that he can't lie because he's just that moral would get him killed in the previous seasons no doubt, it's why Ned and Rob died, their code is meaningless in the game of thrones and they've been braking this rule with Jon a lot. anyways, long story short, Jon deserves to die.

Perfectly encapsulates the way it happens in the story, with even the perfect inclusion of the moment when Catelyn realizes that Roose is wearing full armor. Almost spit out my coffee once I realized what that meant upon reading it in the book, and i think the show nailed that moment and underscored it perfectly with The National's sorrowful rendition of The Rains of Castamere. The lack of consequences was huge and it began from the very first episode of the season.
    Cersei blew up the Great Sept of Baelor (the equivalent of the Vatican) and no one cared. The small folk who were shown to be extremely religious didn't have a negative reaction to their Church being destroyed?
    Not to mention the fact that Jaime's reaction was disappointing considering Cersei did what the Mad King planned to do, just on a smaller scale. The wight hunt was also manufactured to convince Cersei even though she was losing and they didn't need her. I love Cersei and think she's a compelling character but it annoyed me that the writers seemed to be doing everything they could to keep her alive for the final season.

What even is going there?

    1. Kill Bronn.
    The loot train attack is awesome but there's no real price paid on either side. I think Bronn should die because 1) the events would feel like they had actual weight, and there's too many fake deaths 2) his demise would mark the end of the light-hearted fun times of GoT and 3) It would be a great turning point for Tyrion, who should have started the season full of anger and been tempered by the death of his friend.
    2. Capture Jamie
    Stakes and consequences used to be so central in GoT, so when Jamie decides to ride at a dragon it should result in him being captured at the very least. He could have the same scenes with Tyrion but he's in chains, and coming face to face with Daenerys would mean confronting his past, and cause him to alter his present.
    3. Fix Tyrion's Dumb Plan
    Going north of the wall never made sense. They wanted the Night King to get a dragon and there are better ways of doing it. The point of the plan is to convince Cersei, but instead the point should have been to convince Daenerys. She makes a deal with Jon - "I'll burn these frost ghosts of yours and you bend the knee". She has good reasons to be over-confident and dragon-fire has solved all her problems in the past. So they fly north on a dragon and get shot down. This way, Daenerys' over-confidence is the reason her dragon dies, and she's forced to face her own mortality. It would give her more of an arc and than just falling for Jon Snow faster than Viserion fell into the ice.
    I'm working on a video on this very topic and I'd be interested in your opinions on these possible “solutions”. Thanks for reading my long-ass comment, and I love your channel, it's an inspiration!

      All three sound... obvious in retrospect. I actually don't understand why they didn't go somewhat in this direction.
      Maybe not with the capturing of Jamie, because Daenerys would want to kill him (she doesn't like prisoners apparently). Although this could play with the fact that Tyrion would rally against it a lot, maybe losing faith in his Queen or something like "if you kill him, you have to kill me too".
      Dunno, number 3 sounds way more logical as well.

      @johnie102 Yes, she may want to kill him but they already introduced the possibility that Tyrion is going soft on his own family so they should at least take that Tyrion/Dany conflict to its logical conclusion. I think the root of the problem especially lies in Beyond the Wall. Half of that crew should've died. The mission was stupid and they should've paid the price. That would've worked. Don't kill off Jon Snow, but maybe kill off the eyepatch guy, maybe even Tormund. I really thought Jorah would die too, and in fact, he should've. Also it would've been goddamn devastating had Jaimie been stabbed by the Mountain in the finale.

      They did lose like 4-5 people and a dragon. I like how the op says no consequences and shows the scene with jon in the water even though jon's mistake basically caused one of the dragons to be killed + giving the night king his own dragon now.

    • @lukasgordon
      @lukasgordon 7 років тому +11

      Yes, but that's a very impersonal consequence. Was it sad to see the dragon go? Yes. Was it really predictable? Also yes. None of the people who died had any emotional impact in their deaths. They were obvious, and you could see it coming from a mile away, which is not how GoT should work. And it's not really Jon's mistake anyway, since it was out-of-character stupid for Tyrion to come up with that plan in the first place, and it makes no logical sense that Dany would actually ride out there, risking all of her dragons to save Jon, just so they could set up a romance for the last episode. It's not the number of deaths, it's the quality of them. The surprise death was kind of a staple of old GoT but now they can't kill off anybody important. Even Littlefinger's demise, while I enjoyed it, came at the end of a season where he'd literally had nothing to do, and had basically been reduced to a cartoon villain.

      That's how how i felt last season. Cersei just solving all her problems by killing everyone, even her son commits suicide becouse the writers don't know what to do with him. Arya just showing up out of the blue and easely kills the Freys, just to end another storyline quickly. I don't even know what the people of Dorne are thinking. I haven't watched the recent season yet becouse of this. All these easy kills, just to wrap up storylines. It's too obvious, you can always tell when the writers don't know what to do with the characters and just kills them off.

    You lost me at the "don't be angry, just be contemplative" portion near the end. Fans and writers alike should be angry at what happened to Game of Thrones because it was unnecessary. Weiss and Benioff were over their heads trying to maintain the very high story quality, but they easily had access to skilled writers and plenty of budget to help them out. They did not take this path. Instead they chose convention and expediency and threw logic out of the window - needlessly. Worse, when you listen to their commentary and that of some directors on the later seasons, it's apparent that story and writing were at best of secondary concern. Instead, the story became merely a vehicle for spectacle and showing off the acting chops of the lead actors. That is not storytelling, that is just awful writing.

      Scott Meyer They basically fell victim to the "Common TV show formula" that involves having epic scenes and dialogue for no reason other than to be cool. Instead of the complex stories and reasonings the characters had before, it has become a show of shock value and explosions.
      I think the main issue that led to this mess is that, instead of continuing to be a show driven by characters and their motivations, it became a show about the "plot" if that makes sense. So the characters now are nothing more than plot devices essentially instead of people. Just look at the poor development of characters like Stannis, Daenerys and even Arya in the past few seasons.

    • @roxanneanders8326
      @roxanneanders8326 7 років тому +21

      Varamyr Z Just because they rather focus on plot doesn't mean their plot has to be good. It just means that they are now only focusing on that and will do anything to rush to the point they want since they no longer have character focused stories. It is all cause and effect. They are no longer taking their time with anything since they no longer know their characters' motivations and where they should end up. They are out of book content and they don't know how to handle all the characters and their stories anymore so they are mostly just going off of whatever GRRM told them the ending would be and the rest they are making up as they go. And clearly they rather focus on the plot (fighting night walkers, who gets the iron throne, etc.) than on the characters, who in previous seasons WERE the plot (since back then due to the characters' complexities and different goals/journeys, we never knew where things would lead upto).

That would be nice. Like between Tywin and Arya. I always felt the threat to her character and when Arya got lessons from the enemy who would kill her if he knows who she really is, that was awesome. The output was great. Now the pace is too fast and we dont get that awesome golden moments. No space for the drama to breathe when all of it is action. Not much humour either. The main problem I had with the newer seasons of Game of Thrones is that it's losing what made it different to begin with. There's been many other fantasy stories that have had grimdark aspects. The one thing that set Game of Thrones apart from them is that there was a consistent commitment to realism. There was a sense that this story, even without the fantasy aspects, could run as a moving drama akin to Shakespeare. But they're losing that edge, and they're just relying on the fantasy and sex aspects of the show to run on its own, which is bad.
    I've seen many other fantasy stories do the grimdark aspect justice. Warcraft 3, for example, is a very grimdark fantasy story where most of humanity falls to a zombie plague and the zombies even summon demons from another world who cause more havoc on the planet. Similarly, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has a grimdark civil war storyline juxtaposed with dragons attacking the country, while its prequel, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, has fucking demons attacking the Imperial capital, with demonic portals spewing forth the minions of the damned, assaulting cities everywhere. These are stories that are very grimdark in fantasy. They had grey morality, they had horror elements not suited for youngsters, and they had politicking, treachery and backstabbing as plot devices.
    You know what they lacked? A sense of Medieval realism that Game of Thrones had in spades. Take away the fantasy elements, and Warcraft 3 is just about orcs and humans bashing each other in the face, continuing the war that the first two games started. Skyrim would just be about a civil war. Oblivion wouldn't even have a conflict seeing as to how the whole conflict in that game, including the add-ons, revolves around three Daedric invasions. Game of Thrones could function without the White Walkers or the Dragons, and still be a moving tale about a power struggle that tears apart a realm that used to be seven separate kingdoms. But now, you might as well throw all of that politicizing away and just focus on the zombies and dragons.
    The only thing Game of Thrones is now is "Lord of the Rings with more sex and graphic violence". Which is something that's not that hard to get. They're losing the realism that made the first four seasons shocking-which makes them no longer a commodity, just another show in a sea of fantasy shows, some of which do the whole fantasy thing a lot better. Heck, in Oblivion, the player can become a god of an entire dimension. In Skyrim, you can become a vampire lord, and you can also tame and ride dragons, as well as defeat a dragon-god who besieges Valhalla. Warcraft 3 lets you command the armies of the dead and see things from their perspective for a good, long while.
    So the one thing that Game of Thrones had that these other fantasies didn't have is an increased sense of Medieval realism. The power politics between the great houses as well as the consequences of failure. In these other games, failure just means the heroes try again. Even when the humans lose their homelands in Warcraft 3, they just set up a new homeland across the sea. In Skyrim, when Alduin meets the player as he is reviving another dragon, even though the evil dragon-god can easily kill the player, he leaves it to his lesser brethren to kill the player, which gives the player a chance to discover the weakness of said dragon-god and kill his ass in Viking heaven. Another case in Skyrim has the player getting captured and placed in an "inescapable" mine, but it doesn't take that long for the player to start a prison riot and get out. In Oblivion, you enter their equivalent of hell multiple times and come out unscathed. In Lord of the Rings, Legolas and the other heroes survive throwing themselves into Orc armies multiple times without it being a threatening ordeal.
    That's not something Game of Thrones did in the first few seasons. Actions had consequences. Eddard Stark wouldn't make a deal with the Lannisters? He loses his head. His son breaks a vow to a powerful house? That kid loses his head too, after his mother gets her throat slit. Prince Oberyn doesn't finish his opponent? Said opponent crushes his head like an overripe tomato. But now, Jorah Mormont gets easily cured of Greyscale, Jon Snow survives being underwater in a freezing valley full of zombies, and Jaime gets dragged by Bronn back to solid land after falling into a river while wearing heavy plate armor. It's quite obvious as to who will live and who will die, which makes Game of Thrones lose its initial charm, where people didn't see Ned or Robb's deaths coming, or Dany hatching dragons.

Seasons 1-4 were godlike, something out of this fcking world - with so much ambition and masterfully crafted conflicts and character arcs, presenting one of the richest lores out there - and 5-6 sure, they werent as consistently good as the earlier ones but they still gave us some of the best moments of the whole series.
    As much as I wanted to like s7 (and even did quite a bit at first sight), it quickly crumbled on itself (mostly) due to the forced writting and rushed scenes/manufactared conflicts at the high cost of character consistency. The season unfortunately ultimately felt like a high budget fanfic :(

    For me, the only character left that the show truly seems to understand is Cersei. For all the other characters' decline into convenience storytelling and contrived behavior, Cersei's decisions over this last season-her lies to Jaime, to everyone around her, her vindictive revenge schemes, her paranoia, her obsession with her father and his idea of family identity, and her ultimate inability to achieve Tywin's same edge and practicality because of her own ego and temptations-these are all things that have remained pretty well intact. You could also argue that Jaime and Sam haven't been very fucked up either, but beyond those two, everybody else-Tyrion more than all the rest-went to total shit.

      The show doesn't understand Cercei. Lena Headey does. Don't confuse the two. If a weaker actress was playing Cercei, her character would be the worst thing ever. D&D don't understand Cercei. They look at her and see Tywin with tits. In the books she is paranoid and vindictive. In the show she's a mastermind who enjoys torturing the people she's outplayed. And second, the way you're describing her in the books and in the show don't sound dissimilar. Cersei, in both the books and the show, has always been paranoid and vindictive, and she has also always relished in the downfall and punishment of her enemies.

    "Falling out of love with the story..." yes, that's exactly what it is, and you have perfectly described why. To be fair to the show, I actually wonder if this is why GRRM seems to have stopped writing. Did he write himself into a corner where the ending could never be as satisfying as the build-up? The coming evil of the White Walkers was always going to turn the story into good vs. evil after all those years of grey characters playing political games. I was actually quite annoyed with the last book, because as well written as it was, it felt like he was losing interest in the story he already set up, so he started new story lines, like the one with Aegon. As for Season 7, the entire story line beyond the wall was ridiculous, which was upsetting to me since some of my favorite characters were there, doing things that made no sense. The Winterfell story line forced us to either accept that Sansa and Arya were acting out of character or that Littlefinger couldn't tell he was in danger. Neither of those made sense either. Le sigh...

    I'm not an English student, I've always hated it. But even I can tell that George R.R. Martin hasn't written season 7 and season 8. The plot is either convenient or forced too often. Tyrion's fall from grace feels unnatural, Bran has a vision of the Night King while Dany is arriving at Winterfell, Littlefinger's death, the entire journey North of the Wall, etc... There just isn't the same causation that would lead to the major plot points before season 7.
    A good analogy would be that George R.R. Martin constructed a puzzle with GOT and the writers of the show are trying to make their own picture out of the puzzle. And instead of ending up with a complete picture, the show writers left us with holes and pieces that don't quite fit together.

I know its petty to get this emotional about a show and as I said before GoT "got me" but they've done an injustice to us and I will not make the same mistake twice.

      Trust me, you're fine. Back in Season 5 when the show started going downhill, I started going into head-spinning bouts of depression and anxiety over the loss of my favorite franchise EVER that lasted for *years*. Like, I'm not exaggerating, it lasted for years, until I started actively hating the show during Season 7. Sounds psycho, but that's how much I used to love GoT lol.
