@@kierenmoore3236 I believe they did change things up every year as they perfected it. This may or may not have included the actual winding, but I wouldnt be surprised. Not to mention the early days meant they were all handwound which could mean a lot of variation between models of the same year!
This is why when there's a super clean vintage instrument, I rarely go check it out. Fender sent out guitars then just as they do now, there are some tone turds people never bonded with, and to be fair it can't be easy for Fender to really know how great guitars are the day they are born, guitars may need to settle in.
The Nocaster sounded really hot! Maybe the guy on the pickup winding machine had a few more drinks than usual the night before and let it run a few extra rounds before he remembered he should turn it off.
Can you imagine being the person who opens the Nocaster case for the first time in decades and there it is...right in front of you....man, I can only dream.
Lol, I tell people I pulled the golden ticket out of a wonka bar. I knew it was an old tele . . . But WOW not one of the fabled “lost black guards” let alone a Nocaster it was truly amazing 😎✌️🎸
What we're talking about here is TONE DECALS... the specific headstock resonance induced with particular early Fender decals of the Broadcaster, the clipped Broadcaster decals version and the revolutionary changes later brought forward with the all-new Telecaster decals, these inspired innovations of Leo each all lent a specific sonic signature not captured elsewhere... and while Fender Custom Shop has come a long way to recreating that Decal Mojo, in all three headstock decal series, the originals still shine in a unique way.
The grain in that Blackguard tele neck=tone... tone,..tone to the ‘BONE’. I love it when the melody grabs you-an opiate lilt of a smile. What a great episode-thanks you!
SO many people put humbuckers into the neck of Telecasters (no doubt copying a famous guitarist) when one of the greatest electric guitar sounds EVER is a black-guard Tele neck pickup!
I was surprised at how scooped the mids were on that broadcaster bridge pickup, and how bright the neck pickup was. Just goes to show how different guitars were back then
yes, it really is. i begin to doubt the authenticity of some of the vintage guitars. the value is just insane and there things harder to fake than a vintage guiter.....
Nice work. Would be nice to repeat this demo with the "Ashtray" on all of them...just for thoroughness..cos that Broacaster sounds spot-on and its the only one where its used(Ashtray).
I like the sound of the 54 Blackguard, but I like the price a bit less... 34 grand is a lot of money for a plank of wood, although it is loaded with history.

Nice to see him open up and smile once he started playing! They say Prince was the same way. I was thinking he was too cool for school when the dude was talking to him.
All sound great and quite close to each other...only thing missing is the middle position twang: doesn't these guitars have the old "blend" circuit in the bridge position? Very cool tones may be found there...another little trick is to find the sweet spot between position 1 and 2 with the old three way switch, just like an old Strat: it sounds different from the blend circuit, but basically you have always both pickups in parallel... :)
mrkite89 They didn't use the blend or show the dark circuit parts of the video. Time constraints I believe. Well... That & most people don't seem to like the dark circuit. 😎✌️
It's not no caster spec but I have a seller Seymour Duncan stl 1 in the bridge of my classic vibe custom double bound body and its pretty close to the sound of the no caster but sounds more like 54 so you decide.
The neck pickup was re-wound by Jason Lollar himself with period correct gauge wire to factory specs he also had to replace the fiber board he did a great job though! You should’ve seen what it looked Like before lol 😎✌️🎸
Thanks man. I put the 51 nocaster in a used mim 69 thinline reissue and added the 4 way switch so the pickups can be used in series like a humbucker. Very awesome tone. You might be able to find better, but youd spend a fortune trying. Very happy!
He knew what it was & rewound it himself to factory specs using a period correct gauge wire. (pre 54 country twang) It was a special job for my guitars restoration & by my request. I believe his shop has a comparable pu now. If not... ask em about one. They’re pretty cool.
Does the dust on the vintage guitars is original too ? I mean from 51´ and 54’ ? If not , I think you can clean thoses guitars with no risk to change the sound ! But perhaps it’s like Bio patatoes : with dust on, it’s « more bio ».
Why is the butterscotch finish on the Nocaster so much darker than the other two? Is that that just from playing in smoky bars for several decades or did they actually use different variations of that finish depending on the year?
I think it’s varnish lol cut with smoke dirt and spilled drinks. The original finish on the face and sides are gone the only original finish the body has is on the back and under the pick guard of course 😎✌️🎸
The dark circuit is in neck position “we” did film using it but it didn’t make the final cut. the middle position is the neck pickup and the bridge position is the bridge pickup with the use of blend nob to bring in the neck pickup while they filmed the use of the bridge pickup, the use of the blend nob wasn’t *heavy sigh* most people think it has a tone nob 😎✌️🎸
irockuroll60 nope, they are low, lol. Grandpa liked the action low. I did have a shim put in and attenuation done for this years setup tho. They’re sitting a bit better now. Good eyes! 😎✌️❤️🎸
Glenn Winburn I can speak for the Nocaster... the bridge is original & the neck was rewound by Jason Lolar (himself) to vintage factory specs with period correct wire. 😎✌️
Pascal Pascal well, to be honest, I’m blind & have to go by feel. I’ve tried many reissues from the broadcaster, nocaster & blackguard... none have gone home with me yet. Boy oh boy that '54 Blackguard Tele my God...awesome playing too.
Yeah, that Tele is a standout. Did they change the windings on the pups over those years ... ?
I agree. Thought it was the best sounding of the three on the bridge pickup.
@@kierenmoore3236 I believe they did change things up every year as they perfected it. This may or may not have included the actual winding, but I wouldnt be surprised. Not to mention the early days meant they were all handwound which could mean a lot of variation between models of the same year!
The Nocaster sounds righteous and like an old Tele should. Played to death too, usually meaning it was one of the good ones!
I like grandpa,s nocaster best. It aint worth a thang, if it dont have that twang.
