- In moments of crisis like this one, it helps to look to our favorite stories for ways to cope. Let’s see how film helps us understand what it means to be alone, how to hold leaders accountable, and what we can do to protect one another.

I left out one movie because I only used audio from it. Easter egg for whoever can figure it out first!
@@NowYouSeeIt Thank you, NYSI! However, I would also recommend adding the years next to the title, as The Thing has an identically titled remake from 2011 and The Shining has a TV series with the exact same title.
But yeah, overall, I am very grateful! Thank you so much!

I absolutely love these kind of videos you're putting out. No talking over the scenes, no choosing single words from scenes to make your own sentences, but finding a way to tell a story by taking scenes from many different movies. Surprisingly coherent, surprisingly catching.

“Contagion” went from an underrated gem to an overnight horror classic when this pandemic started.
The virus from Contagion is real, it's called Nipah Virus. It was first discovered in Malaysia in 1999, and had around 100 deaths. Fortunately it wasn't spread to other countries because the authorities responded quickly once they found the source. This experience in handling virus is why Malaysians take covid19 seriously and don't joke around about it being conspiracies and protesting lockdowns and stuff. There's a video that explains how Malaysia went from 3x more cases than any country in southeast Asia, to now being one of the safest countries in the entire world.

It was boring
My friend told me it was a zombie film. It wasnt. And it was good. Also real life is boring means its very realistic.

No, theyre not for the most part. Fiction is inspired by real life. From post apolcaliptic films to outbreaks and such, they all draw from our history- just in the last 1000 years we had all sorts of crysis and outbreaks, as we probably had others more previously. Sure they try to predict how more modern concepts, institutions and technicalities would react or break down- but thats still drawing conclusions from the past. We can derive a lot from the past- but its very difficult predicting stuff that never really happened before... it may be easy to imagine how things like the internet going kaput would break things today, but that still comes from our experience of how in the past other systems breaking went. If any part of our new context would result in different never seen outcomes, in unusual ways, they rarely are predicted.
For example i dont remenber a single one focusing on people social media and even politicans spreading fake news and ignoring a real virus killing people... because it never happened this way before; on the other hand dystopian movies showing a government trying to cover the truth (the next closest thing) are bountifull, because it happened before.
You can bet next movies will start showing this up, and from there extrapolations, like worse case scenarios of this trend in much worse ways- including ways that one day may happen. But it wouldnt be much of a prediction- still insights from the past.
Sci-fi tries to predict lots of stuff (wich i love), and we have yet to see if they predicted correctly anything, but then each book and movie makes different ''predictions''- so it increases the chances of one getting it right. BUt even the hardest most futuristic what-if bigbrainer have a tendency to look at the past to predict... a good example of this is how most films about rise of AI actually relates to slavery (and what if slaves all rose up, or were objectivly different and or better then their slavers in multiple ways), while the reality if it ever happens will probably be unlike anything (the film Her would be more feasible for example)
@@Vincer I really like how you don't understand what you are saying, and how you are contradicting yourself permanently because of that.

Yeah man. Go listen to "Godspeed you! Black Emperor" - song called East Hastings. That's the inspiration. Long, droning, buildup, so it's a bit inaccessible but it. Hits. Hard.
Also check out their song Moya - not as long and still ridiculously epic. The crescendo buildup of fabulous. Enjoy.
I think clips from Children of Men would have been appropriate addition.

This was a master class in editing!
Amazing job, it's a great representation of why films are one of the most important arts humanity has created.
This is why science fiction and speculative fiction as whole is actually a very important part of entertainment; it provides us with possible futures and reactions for events that may or may not happen at some point throughout humanity’s existence. Pretty cool really.
You're cooked mate. Wake up
Love that included Arrival but wish you showed her class receiving text alerts and asking her to turn on the tv. Good illustration of a crisis interrupting normal classroom function, even as some tried to hold it together.
This is what I felt Avengers Endgame was lacking: showing the consequences of half the entire population disappearing one day.

Rewatched Contagion back in April. That movie is SCARY accurate to how things have been playing out. Like, shot-for-shot could be a documentary. The virus even starts in China and is a strain of SARS.
This. This is the direction you once went and since then I admire you even more. The commentary that is contained within the scenes of movies itself. The commentary that is striking but is not expressed in words of any single man. It seems as it's expressed by those who didn't have a chance to make a comment. Wonderful stuff NYSI, wonderful.
