I have at least three instances where winz are useless/mean. 1. I used to have a case manager who asked me what my parents did for work one appointment. I told her and she said “if they have such good jobs why are you so messed up?” Ironically there was a poster on the wall next to her desk that said “if you respect us we’ll respect you” so does that mean I can disrespect her now? 2. I was working after not being on the benefit for two years at this point, like I was actually at my job, when I went on break and saw I had multiple missed calls and texts from the case manager (in point 1.) She was angry I didn’t answer the phone, berated me for it, had set up an interview at a place I didn’t want to work at and demanded I leave work early to attend it. I said something like “oh you want me to leave my job that I’m currently working at early to go to an interview you set up after knowing I haven’t gotten anything from winz for like two years?” She was pretty angry I didn’t jump at the chance or literally kiss her feet for getting me an interview. 3. I was waiting to attend an appointment at winz with a different case manager. The case manager in points 1&2 was talking to someone at the reception desk so I waited. The whole time I was there they berated this poor guy, all the guy wanted to do (that I could tell anyway) was make an appointment
My Winz experience was way different. I had a medical certificate to say I was unfit to work and I was made to come in once a week to prove I was looking for work or my benefit would get cut. It was a $25 accomodation supplement with $100 living costs. Didn't even cover my rent. And when I failed to find a job after 2 weeks my case manager scolded me. Told me I'm an embarrassment and a disgrace to NZ society and if I don't feel constant guilt then I'm a monster. This was after I had just got out of hospital due to severe depression and had a medical certificate to prove my daily suicidal thoughts.
I never had abusive case managers but I definitely had a couple of patronizing passive aggressive ones. I have chronic pain which means I'm unable to work full time lmao winz doesn't know chronic exists 🤣 I luckily have a case worker now who is disabled themselves and they're pretty nice.

Got the run-around from WINZ about a year ago when I was trying to apply for a supplement because my hours had been cut. Apparently they split the payments between the person applying AND their partner. My wife lives abroad, is not a citizen, has never lived or worked here, doesn't have an IRD number or a NZ bank account. Thinking (Logically) that my wife is not eligible to receive benefits, I applied to get the single persons rate - because every bit helps, right? I was up-front about my actual situation when I dropped my forms off at the office, and the WINZ officer I spoke to accused me of trying to commit fraud! So I guess my admittedly unusual relationship situation means I fall through the cracks. I can't figure out how there are so many people getting benefits in any case, with all the hoops you have to jump through now. Was only on the benefit once before - back in the 90's - and I remember it was WAAAAY simpler then.

People who take advantage of this are bums aye. Some people actually really need it to help them come from a kid/teen to functional adult. It’s hard to go to your first job interview if your homeless can’t afford a clean pair of work clothes and bus fair to work. That’s what the benefit is for
Unfortunately it’s the vast majority of people on the benefit who are bums. I think they should make the benefit more generous and just force you off after 6 months or so. It’s ridiculous you have people on the dole for YEARS that actually get increases in their benefit the longer they’re on it.

The sad thing is that this isn't accurate.. And this video, no matter how well crafted and entertaining it is, will make it even more difficult for people who really need the benefit to get it because they will be watching and think this is the real culture for the application process. Unfortunately it's a damn sight harder and you pretty much need to provide blood and swear your first born over (Well not actually, but that's how it feels) to get the case manager to agree to put you on a 3 month waiting list.
That’s not true at all, getting on the benefit isn’t hard in Nz and you get backpaid while in application. While this video isn’t ‘accurate’ per say (you can’t tell Winz you don’t want to work) the only actual documentation you need is ID and proof that you pay rent. On top of that Winz doesn’t even check if your job hunting ever since covid hit. On top of that, some of the payouts are so insane that you’re better off being on the benefit than getting a minimum wage job. Winz will pay your rent, make sure your utilities are paid for and support your living expenses if your on benefit. If you work 40 hours a week you get taxed 17.5%~30% and don’t have the luxury of having utilities paid for. On top of that if you are on benefit you qualify for many additional subsidies and help from Winz besides just the benefit that you wouldn’t qualify for if you work full time.

Its huge budget increase since 2020 is the reason why NZ economy is down the drain and inflation in NZ is higher than many other countries. Turns out just giving hundreds of dollars to people every week who don't work is not good economic policy and allowing people to sit on the benefit for years without trying to verify they aren't bums or are able bodied is just poor money management.
The more self sufficient you appear to be the worse Winz will treat you. Walk in there brown, jobless, pregnant and barefoot and you'll have a room and benefit sorted for you before the end of the day.
I was in-between jobs and out of work for two weeks and tried to get job seekers and the case manager was just like LOL no, this isn't for you, keep looking for work, and I did find work after 2 weeks but yeah, in my experience, getting on the benefit is very difficult

People who take advantage of this are bums aye. Some people actually really need it to help them come from a kid/teen to functional adult. It’s hard to go to your first job interview if your homeless can’t afford a clean pair of work clothes and bus fair to work. That’s what the benefit is for
Unfortunately it’s the vast majority of people on the benefit who are bums. I think they should make the benefit more generous and just force you off after 6 months or so. It’s ridiculous you have people on the dole for YEARS that actually get increases in their benefit the longer they’re on it.

Some of us are on the benefit because we have injuries that would make us a burden to an employer rather than an asset! like myself with back and spine injuries that I've had since I was 7 years old. I farkin hate being on supported living and would love to find suitable full time employment but because my back can give out at any moment I can't do shit and as a man that really messes with me mentally because I actually want employment but just can't. The sad thing is that this isn't accurate.. And this video, no matter how well crafted and entertaining it is, will make it even more difficult for people who really need the benefit to get it because they will be watching and think this is the real culture for the application process.
Unfortunately it's a damn sight harder and you pretty much need to provide blood and swear your first born over (Well not actually, but that's how it feels) to get the case manager to agree to put you on a 3 month waiting list.
Yeah, which is why I don't think this is "well crafted" at all. It's actually quite fucked up really.
That’s not true at all, getting on the benefit isn’t hard in Nz and you get backpaid while in application.
While this video isn’t ‘accurate’ per say (you can’t tell Winz you don’t want to work) the only actual documentation you need is ID and proof that you pay rent. On top of that Winz doesn’t even check if your job hunting ever since covid hit.
On top of that, some of the payouts are so insane that you’re better off being on the benefit than getting a minimum wage job. Winz will pay your rent, make sure your utilities are paid for and support your living expenses if your on benefit. If you work 40 hours a week you get taxed 17.5%~30% and don’t have the luxury of having utilities paid for.
On top of that if you are on benefit you qualify for many additional subsidies and help from Winz besides just the benefit that you wouldn’t qualify for if you work full time.

Its huge budget increase since 2020 is the reason why NZ economy is down the drain and inflation in NZ is higher than many other countries. Turns out just giving hundreds of dollars to people every week who don't work is not good economic policy and allowing people to sit on the benefit for years without trying to verify they aren't bums or are able bodied is just poor money management.
The more self sufficient you appear to be the worse Winz will treat you. Walk in there brown, jobless, pregnant and barefoot and you'll have a room and benefit sorted for you before the end of the day.

I was in-between jobs and out of work for two weeks and tried to get job seekers and the case manager was just like LOL no, this isn't for you, keep looking for work, and I did find work after 2 weeks but yeah, in my experience, getting on the benefit is very difficult
He tried to stop you. That happened to me too. A case manager told me not to be on benefit and just go to your parents. I declined and just proceeded.
