Iam from Michigan. My ancestors settled in Ky in the late 1700's to present. It is so cool that Ky did this, for the Elk and the people.

I grew up in the mountains with Southeast Kentucky. Are used to play in the hills every day. I remember being eight years old, wondering miles away from the house playing in the hills. Every now and then I would see some small critters like squirrels, frogs, snakes, turtles and that’s about it. Sometime around 1990 they put a ban on deer hunting to get the population up. Then they introduced the elk. Now, when I go back to visit, I’ve seen elk, deer, bear, mountain lion, turkey and coyotes.

Not the same subspecies of elk that was originally there. The tule elk of northern California and southern Oregon would have been closer to the original. And there are no where near the number of elk being reported. There may have been a few years back but the population is down to more like 3 to 4 thousand and there predominantly on private land.
