  • In this video, we dive into the art of air layering as we clone the exquisite Roxburgh fig on our South Florida farm. If you’re passionate about sustainable farming and want to learn how to propagate your own fig trees, you’re in the right place!
    Step-by-Step Air Layering Process:
    1. Selecting the Right Branch:
We start by choosing a healthy, vigorous branch on the Roxburgh fig tree. This branch should be at least pencil-thick and free of any disease or damage.
    2. Making the Cut:
Next, we carefully make a small incision around the branch, peeling away a section of the bark to expose the inner wood. This step encourages root growth at the cut site.
    3. Applying Rooting Hormone:
To accelerate root development, we apply a rooting hormone to the exposed area. This step is crucial for a successful air layer.
    4. Wrapping the Cut:
We then wrap the cut area with moist sphagnum moss and secure it with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. This creates a mini-greenhouse effect, keeping the area moist and promoting root growth.
    5. Monitoring and Waiting:
Over the next few weeks, we monitor the air layer to ensure the moss stays moist. You’ll start seeing roots forming within 4-8 weeks.
    6. Separating and Planting:
Once the roots are well established, we carefully cut the branch below the new root ball and plant it in a pot or directly in the ground.
    About the Roxburgh Fig:
The Roxburgh fig, also known as Ficus auriculata, produces large, pear-shaped fruits with a unique, berry jam-like sweetness. These figs are not only delicious but also packed with nutrients, making them a favorite among fig enthusiasts. Whether you enjoy them fresh or dried, Roxburgh figs are a treat that’s worth the effort of growing your own tree.

So cool! I went to a winery in Italy once and they hade a fig tree that consisted of 3 varieties grafted together so it would produce fruit at 3 different times during the summer

Those look absolutely sublime.I've been watching your videos for some time.I loved your Costa Rica vlog so many yummy coconuts! The figs look delicious.I wonder if you could breed fig wasps in the area that would help with pollination.I know the wasps can be sustained in Florida.

Thanks! These figs are actually parthenocarpic which means they do not need a wasp to pollinate them 😌
