  • Joe Frank Carollo founded the group, Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynolds back in the late 60's. The trio found instant success with their hit, 'Don't
Pull Your Love" in 1970 and again in 1971 with 'Let Your Love Flow'
I caught up with the charismatic Joe Frank Carollo from his home in California and learned lots about him, his success with the ladies and the loves of his life nowadays, his grandchildren.

Joe your bass playing is out of this world! You have to be one of the most underrated bassists to ever have played. People just overlooked pop and softer rock players, but if you really listened to the bassists and guitarists you'd hear just how great they were. Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds put out some CLASSIC TRACKS that are timeless and superb, they bring back many great memories for me. The bassists in The Carpenters and Bread were brilliant as well. Thanks for doing this interview!

After recently 'rediscovering' Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynolds, I have a much greater appreciation for them, but at the same time so sad to learn of Hamilton's untimely passing. On a brighter note, this interview with Joe Frank is a treasure! Amazing bass player and vocalist - not only with HJF&R, which was pure magic, but in his own right. So glad to know he is still performing - keep it up and thanks for all the great music!

Winners and losers should have went to #1; it was a masterpiece but the competition in the 70's was rough because of all the great music being put out at that time (a far cry from what's being put out today). You're a excellent bass player Joe Frank and that's coming from a 40 year bass playing veteran !!!😊

This is priceless so sad what happened to Dan Hamilton only 48. They were all very talented men & should have been much more famous and financially wealthy for their talent but they were taken advantage of by people who made a lot of money off of them but did not share the wealth. Frank looks great so happy he has his family.

HJFR were spectacular musicians! Joe, your harmonies and prolific bass playing make you 1 of the GOATS
I can't say enough about Danny Hamilton! So young when he passed. I always thought he had the best sound of anyone at that time. In my book, he still occupies the best male vocalist ever!
After all these years, I still love your music as much as I did when it first came out!

Dan composed and recorded alongside Joe Frank, alongside his brother Judd, and worked with his ex-wife Ann on all these songs in the 80s-90s:
    Give it Up,
    Welcome Back Home,
    Wanna Do Ya,
    Cry in the Night,
Country is What Country Does, Feel it
With You, Loving Comes Easy, Head You Win Tails I Lose,
    Do You Really Love Me,
    Santa Monica Nights,
    Roll On Down The Road,
    I Shake All Over,
and others in his composition catalog that I haven't heard because not even snippets of the recordings appear.
But I can assure you that all these songs are genius and are stored, recorded, and it would be amazing if someone digitized them, at least, and released an album, even digitally, as a tribute to Dan with all these beautiful compositions by Dan, added to all his songs with Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds/Dennison. What's the point of leaving his beautiful art hidden and forgotten? His music brings joy to people; his voice can even emotionally heal those who listen. Compiling all his precious songs for everyone to enjoy would be a true gift to the world and a beautiful tribute to Dan.

They also recorded for Playboy Records (Hugh Hefner's record company) in 1975. In fact, their best album was recorded on Playboy (called "Fallin' In Love"). The LP had a rose on the inner sleeve and was scented with rose perfume and smelled WONDERFUL when you pulled out the album. I wish Sandy would have asked Joe Frank about the last song on this LP called "Love Is" and why it was dedicated to "Joe Carollo SR." (it says so on the album) i.e. what is the story behind it. Excellent interview. I'm still waiting for the folks at the Midnight Special to release their appearance on the Midnight Special (like they did Peter Frampton and others) in true stereo.

Hi, Cuz. The Carollo family go way back. Leland was a small town and everybody knew everybody. I remember the Knights, I remember the T-Bones. H, JF and R came to Leland and played a gig in the Catholic Youth Center one afternoon. We spent an afternoon with Joe Frank back in the 70's trying to rent a B3, because our Hammond A100 didn't have a Leslie. Years later I bought the Carollo's 55' Seagoing houseboat, lived on it 5 years. Joe Frank married Sally Ray, a close friend from Greenville.

I understand how difficult it can be to speak about people who have passed away, but it would truly make the people who have been listening to them and wish to know them better very happy. It doesn't matter how much time has passed; their music is eternal, and that music originated from human beings we genuinely wish to get to know. Always maintaining utmost respect for their personal lives and privacy. I believe that reminiscing about tours, shows, recording moments, and anecdotes wouldn't infringe on their privacy, and it would be so comforting for the fans and listeners of such beautiful music.

With Alan's passing last year, we lost insight into the life of an exceptional pianist, and Dan was also reserved, leaving scarce information about him. Joe Frank is the only one who can share the story of their musical journey, their work, and experiences. They created so much art, and it would be valuable to understand the events surrounding their Las Vegas shows, recorded demos, movie soundtracks, thoughts, and expressions. I hope Joe Frank will open up and share stories about his and his friends Alan and Dan's musical endeavors from 1972 until Dan's passing, and even his life and work thereafter. 🙏

You can hear snippets of them in the movie and they’re all more country oriented. @@musicexpert2 Perhaps you're thinking of songs like "What Kind of Love Is This" or "Sweet Pain", since Danny sings "It Takes the Best" . I'd love to hear the story behind "Love Is", which is dedicated to Joe Frank's father's memory on the album; from what Joe has shared, he seems to have been an incredible person. Maybe they could compile songs from the 80s - the ones I mentioned would make a great tribute album, I'm sure. Realistically, the other albums are easily accessible, so compiling them wouldn't make sense. However, rare tracks like those recorded for the Hunter's Blood movie, songs co-written with Joe Frank, Judd and Ann, would be the perfect combination to honor Danny's memory and pay tribute to Joe Frank while he's still with us. In fact, they deserve to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
