My personal favorite power-up would be the invincibility star from Mario, which comes with a catchy jingle that's as iconic as the 1-1 music track from the original SMB.
You really can't go wrong with the Starman.
@@kirotalksyt Metal Mario Theme, Just METAL MARIO theme
Invincibility*
(How do you make that mistake?)
@Burger King Fries 🗸
you can easily tell what they meant via context clues so does it really matter if they spelled it wrong?
@@snailll9929 Just looking out for the fam so they don't sound like an idiot
Imagine if powerups didnt exist. Where would we be?
Here
...still playing Atari 2600 games.
On planet Earth, within the Solar System, in the Milky Way Galaxy.
In your mom's house.......... making cookies
Could probably live without but they are pretty fun.
One example of powers up gone wrong is Balan Wonderworld.
The best de-power ups are best implemented in Wario Land 2 onwards. Seeing Wario run while he burns will never be unfunny.
Penguin suit is underrated.
Its a more powerful version of the ice flower, you can slide and it looks cool, it deserves more attention
Penguin easily blows ice flower out of the water due to the slide and allowing you to move on ice without slideing
Fr
random but i like listening to your videos in the background while i play modded celeste levels, your vids are so fun and informative, and they help get me thinking about my own game that i want to make too
This is literally me. wtf 🤣. That makes 2 of us, I guess
I love watching his videos while frying eggs😂
@@JohnWolf2007 based, I'll say
Ah, yes, the one power-up you can get in real life, GUN.
The power-up is even more common in the level "America"
@@Grane1234 It might as well be a bonus level designed specifically around the usage of that power-up.
This was great. I look forward to seeing more topics spanning across classic to modern games being tackled in the future.
I also like how Halo CE was so old and still had power-ups in some of its levels. A shield boost to let you take more hits and invisibility to let you sneak past enemies.
All caught up on all your videos again. And it's interesting it took so long for me to find a video that talks in detail about power-ups. Very terrific subject matter to cover here. Glad I saw this!
For a while, I’ve wanted to write a (video) essay on how the design philosophies around Kirby’s Copy Abilities have changed overtime. Maybe some day I’ll get around to it, but I’ve got quite a few projects that could use that time…
sounds super interesting, subbed if and when you ever get around to it!
@@twixchexmix Aw thanks, haha😅
I love Kirby with his copy abilities
Proud of your growth Kiro! Will always be rooting you on!
Question: would you consider the command styles from KHBBS good powerups or bad powerups?
lol, you said Mario uses his head to smash blocks although it’s widely accepted that he uses his fist.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The biggest reason for power ups would be to spice up the gameplay experience, and temporary power ups do this well. If all Mario could do to defeat enemies was jump on them, it could be boring. Give him a fire flower, and, until he loses it, now he has a new way to play.
Power ups can also be divided into permanent and temporary. Permanent ones, like the guns or backpack in Doom (until you pistol start a level), levels in most RPG, or hearts in The Legend Of Zelda reward exploration and/or puzzle solving (in the case of levels, then the reward is for time spent fighting enemies), and make you feel stronger, or at least have more tools to fight tougher enemies.
Time based power ups, like the invincibility in Doom, Mario, Sonic, or most games where you can gain invincibility, give a fun way to change the play for a short time. If it's something you can pick up when you want, like in Doom, there's the strategy of picking the best time to use it.
Consumable are a type of power up that demand strategy. Most first person shooters use ammo in this regard. Unlike the guns that last until taken by story, or you start a level fresh, ammo constantly is used when you fire a gun. It encourages you to think, "Should I use these shotgun shells to kill the imps, or try to save them and use the chainsaw? I am running low on shells now, but might take damage." The items in Mario Kart function the same way. You can use the banana peel defensively to block shells, or offensively to stop an approaching kart. The P Wing in Mario 3 lasted a whole level, but was still gone after, and wasn't something to be used thoughtlessly.
5:15 He uses his fists.
I knew someone would say it Iol
I always forget that lol
6:16 This came out of left field, but I do like seeing someone talking about Spark cause that game deserves way more popularity than it currently gets
depending on your definition, power-ups still exist and every game (even in the same series) has different power-ups
Mario Actually uses his fist to break Brick Blocks when using a super mushroom
2:43 glad he put Pizza Tower in this.
You said Mario used his head to break the blocks when Super! If you look closer to the sprite he uses his fist not his head! But don't think I'm attacking you or anything because everyone since 1985 thought the same thing as what you said!
I LOVE this type of videos. Thanks man
I'm making power ups for a game right now.
Your videos feel like they end abruptly.
Hey this channel is my favorite hidden gem. I hope you grow because I love your insight.
Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate the support!
@@kirotalksyt of course, you deserve it.
I love this format. It’s refreshing to see a channel where the creator just talks about what interests them and isn’t only chasing the algorithm.
I usually prefer utility abilities or power ups combat ones are fine but enemy defeats can get boring. Using a grapple on an enemy's cool but specific areas while can be ok and the momentum if considered it nice having it be any surface or even like in Hell Pie in the air is very differently balanced but more fun. I don't think breaking a game should be the case but still. Fire to me is boring on enemies but if I used it with an ice or wax platform to make it melt I'd find it more fun.
Combat is fine but I think utility use is more fun alongside combat. If I could use an ice power up to freeze them and get on top of the enemy to break them or NPC to climb on top of them then it's more fun. At least to me. If it interacts with level design or enemies in interesting ways. If needed for combos especially then just they take hits and it can be used maybe of a ball to hit another enemy in a chain reaction or redirection I think is nice too.
Using the Portal Gun is fun and the surfaces are contextual but we'll designed around it even if using it on everything would be more fun but at the same time you could break the game more. I leaned this better using a Minecraft datapack creates by someone else on a puzzle map I made that allowed for portal or teleport I forget which like mechanics with 3 dyes coded to act differently and using red clay for barriers and common blocks to make it easy to go to those. With darkness to scale levels accordingly while also having a lot of themed rooms for some really varied tight spaces, or large spaces/personality but the use cases varied. That or in my last room I messed up and forgot they can get around the level easily but hoped that because they are so I to being strict with where to use it it would work but because I had black blocks and a dark room I hoped it would blend in areas you couldn't use it as death plane holes but in fact they are just black blocks that could be used to move to so a fake out even if I don't think it works that well but still.
My favorite power-up is still the Quad-Damage from the Quake series.
Kiro (which I suppose is your nickname, maybe even real name), your videos are bingeworthy. I love you. Keep it up
Thanks a bunch! You're too kind. I'm gonna keep making videos for as long as I can.
@@cajunking5987 Certainly didn't expect that 🤣 but thanks. Yours is amazing too, who is that?
"this chicken" HIS NAME IS MORT
Old school games that have power ups are one of a kind experience that give gamers a awesome experience.
Video Games Have Power Ups In Levels, what do Cartoons Have in Episodes???
This video made me think of monster hunter actually. That game has powerups in the form of a meal before a hunt, consumables you take on the hunt and skills that can change large parts of the way you play. They're not conventional power-ups like a mushroom or star but still fit the bill, giving you an extra hit, making your have more i-frames etc...
Super Mario actually breaks the bricks using his fist and not his head
Epic! another video
Keep going your content is epic!
I like your take on the pizza tower transformations
In my opinion this is the ultimate power fantasy. Permanent power always numbs on the player after a while so if I can fly in a game eventually I’ll get bored of it. Flying will still be fun because I can’t fly in real life but it won’t be the same as when I booted up the game for the first time. However the brevity of power ups allows you to keep the perspective of your normal form so that joy of flying lasts a lot longer than the first 2-3 times
I recently played Fire Embleme Engage and one of the most prominent power ups are the Emblems.
And I adore Emblem Tiki and Emblem Soren.
Tiki enhances the users staat growths, gives a number of benefits including a powerful healing abillty and the best thing is the user can turn in to a freaking Dragon which gives +5 to all staats.
Soren increases magic damage and heals the users HP when he deals. And he also doubles the crit chance if the user is a Dragon.
In the hands of the right mage Soren turns its user in to an unkillable magical nuke.
Tiki and Soren are overpowered but I dont mind at all. I love magic and Dragons. They are so satisfaying to use.
My favorite power up is hitting that subscribe button
Kiro called mort the chicken "this chicken"
I am so appalled and offended that i will unsmash your like and subscribe button and unhit that bell
Super Sonic in the classic games is in my opinion the best powerup. You are rewarded for skillful special stage play and keeping your rings. It's Sonic to the max increasing speed and jump height along with invisibility. However you have to learn how to control the increased power.
I agree with that. But then if you get all the super emeralds in S3&K, you gotta learn Hyper Sonic aswell xD
Dont know if it fits the criteria exactly but i also think of Pokemon evolving is kind of a cosmetic power up as i dont think theres a big difference if you evolve your Pokemon or not except that its learning different moves, and the evee type change of course, Digimon would rather fit the Bill since the Evolution is not permanent and that gives it a more of a feel of a power up in the literal sense. And of course the super saiyan in dragonball showing that its not only a video game phenomenon
My favorite power ups were on Yoshi Island where you could turn into vehicles, it was so fun and challenging
Love your videos man, it sucks that UA-cam in general has gone to shit but I hope your channel grows
I love Kirby's whip weapon
Great video! I knew in my head the different ways you can get power ups but I’d never seen them articulated, this definitely made me think about it more. Your editing is also fantastic!
I can’t really think of an example of a game without power ups
Atari 2600 games...take your pick.
This is a million sub channel, mark my words
Hey great video can you do a video on super Mario 64 please
I’m hurt that bomberman wasn’t mentioned here 💔
True
There's powerups in Jazz Jackrabbit 2 as well
5:17 in the case of the red mushroom, I would classify it as an augmentive power up. Boosting a character’s physical attributes such as strength, speed and durability.
43rd!
I saw someone do this, and I'd like to see you have a go at this topic, that being "Video Game Intros."
Can you talk about Puppeteer? It's a beautiful game that almost nobody talks about
3:50 what game is that?
And Power Down?
The Vodka bottle in Atomic Heart 👌🤌
Man! Ur so underrated! Great video as always 😊
I think this video is a power up
