Once again, thank you Kaity! Every time I watch one of your videos, I learn something. Matter of fact, I have watched several of them 2-3 times and still pick things up. We all can only strive to give our fish the best home possible and thanks to you, we are learning all the ways in which we can do just that.
I'm so glad I found this video of yours because I'm getting a 125 for Christmas this year and that is exactly what I want to put in my tank I am not a newbie but I do appreciate all the info I could get
Kaity I absolutely love your channel. I’ve just started a 75g African cichlid tank. 3 yellow labs, 2 peacocks, a Johanni, 2 blue açai and a Kenyi. Your tank is absolutely stunning.
Hi Kaity. A great tank. I started a 180ltr Cichlid tank some 12 months ago and slowly built up the tank with juvenile mbuna, Peacock, Haps, and ODs. All went well until the ODs, Peacocks and Haps started to grow. Also there were more males than females (lucky dip with juveniles) and the aggression started. This resulted in two fish kills that included the victims being blinded. The offender was put in my other 500 ltr Cichlid tank with larger fish and no more trouble with him. The 180 tank has settled down but every so often someone has a brain fade and becomes aggressive for a while. My 500 is another story. A very aggressive tank from time to time and a few kills. I think with Cichlids you have to be lucky with getting "tame ones". Challenging but great fish and worth the effort.
Hi Tom! Thank you so much 😊 Yes, I definitely think some of it is down to luck of the draw. As mine grew up there was definitely an increase in aggression, and I had a couple killed off. But the remaining ones are so good so far, and hopefully it stays that way!
Beautiful aquarium 🥇 I have mix haps Peacocks and Lake Tanganyika trophies and all is great, I make sure water parameters are perfect and high PH.. Thank you 🙏
Your tank is beautiful. I agree keeping them together from young help tremendously. Currently running a 75 gallon with 8 Peacocks 8 Mbunas 2 Firemouths 1 Convict. All getting along. No breeding
I really wanted to mix mbunas and peacocks and was so worried if they'll kill each other. Your video really brought peace to my mind! I'm gonna follow what you said and mix them with caution. Thanks a lot and I hope you continue making more and more videos regularly. New subscriber!! 😊
Hello Kaity. I know this is an older video but I was just looking for some content on this subject. I have a 65 gallon with Mbunas in it and a 90 gallon with Peacocks and Haps in it. In the 65 gallon I had 4 Blue Colbalts in there and one was already doing his 2nd stint in lock up for his aggression and assault charges. While he was in lock up another one start taking over as the terror. So I finally ended up putting both in the 90 with the Peacocks and Haps. They stick together but I have seen no aggression from them. My only concern is the feeding since I fed my Mbunas the Spirulina flakes and Veggie pellets and I feed the Peacocks and Haps Krill and Beef Heart flakes and protein pellets. What is a food that I can get away with feeding the 90 gallon aquarium where they're all okay. Thank you for your help.
hi kaity the tank is looking great and some interesting information im just in the middle of setting up a cichlid tank myself im just getting it all one video before i upload was thinking of stocking convicts and jewels have subscribed to your channel all the best martyn
I would think you would still want to be careful which mbuna you have with peacocks and haps. So far I have only had labs (white and yellow) due to milder temperament. Which ones do you have in your mixed tank?
Very informative video! I have a 75 gallon, I want peacocks and mbuna in it, what do you think the peacock to mbuna ratio should be for that tank size? Size is 49L 19.5W and 21.25H
Thank you! They would probably do ok when they're small but once they start growing I think that would be a bit too small to keep peacocks and Mbuna. I would probably opt more for small Mbuna like shell dwellers for a tank that size long term 😊
I have 5 african cichlids in my 1.5ft tank and it’s so beautiful with my wrgb lighting and it is still not enough for me though they are about 3•5 inch to 4 inch
I have a similar setup with mbuna, peacocks & Haps. What do you feed them to meet their diet needs? as I know peacocks need high protein and mbuna tend to get gut bloat from high protein foods
Wow you tank is awesome. I need your advice. I have about 10 mbunas, yellow labs and most are juvie or small. I have a 75 gallon tank. I never had peacocks or Haps but would like to try. I have a set up were the mbuna have caves. I have open area for peacocks and haps. What do you recommend for the yellow labs?
Yellow labs are unique because they can actually have a more protein rich diet compared to most Mbuna! You could try some more peaceful haps with them like blue dolphins and Mirrorball cichlids. I probably wouldn't get anything too big though like venestus in a 75 gallon though
ECOLOGICAL LABS MicrobeLift Special Blend. A liquid bacteria that controls algae and liquify all bad matter in the tank. I personally been using this product since day one, long time ago. This my suggestion for your aquarium tank.
@@Kaityscichlids Love your videos. I use the bacteria every night after light is turned 📴. Just follow instructions for your tank size. You are welcome, take care.
I truly believe it all depends on the fish and sometimes you’ve gotta take some risks and let the fish decide.. Ik it may sound harsh but I also have many hiding places and a big enough space to get away or hide giving them a chance atleast. Am I cruel? I just think it’s the way it is idk
I am looking to add some more limestone rock to add even more hiding spots! I even threw in some hornwort which I heard they might eat and I don’t mind if they do, but it’s gotten greener and filled out more in spots that were bare when I purchased it! Even when food lands on it they ignore it and just slurp the food.. so far so good!
hi i have a 75 gallon tank with 8 (1.5) inch mbuna. question how many peacoks should or can i add. they will be around same size . 1.5-2 ichers... great Content!
Hey AmeXcy 😊 Thank you! Yes, I've lost I would say about 8 since having it setup. I think 3 due to jumping out of the tank, 2 from my error stuffing up a water change, and the other 3 were due to aggression I believe
I would start with something like 6 different coloured peacocks and a few different species of small mbuna and see how they go. You would probably find a lot of the species of haps get too big for that size (unless you're planning to upgrade in the future)
So I've bn nervous to put mbunas in my peacock n hap tank, but now I've come across a Williams zebra mbuna that's gorgeous n I want that fish lol. Would be only mbuna in tank, what are ur thoughts?
I haven't! But I considered keeping one when I had South American setup. I'm pretty sure other South American fish like Oscars, Green Terrors, Convict cichlids go well with them
What if the mbuna eat too much protien-fiber pellets, will they bloat due to high amounts of protien ingestion?and what if the peackocks don't get enough protien?
I haven't had any issues with bloat or growth so far. I have found that the Mbuna are naturally more inclined to graze on the algae throughout the day and eat the foods with higher fibre, then the pellets with protein are enough for the haps and peacocks
I would think you would still want to be careful with which mbuna you use. I have only used labs so far (yellow and white) due to their milder temperament. Which and mbuna do you have in your tank and have you had any that were too aggressive?
Hi Mark, I have 6 different types: yellow lab, red zebra, OB zebra, yellow tail acei, red top hongi, and a bumblebee. I haven't had any that are too aggressive yet, but I would say my bumblebee is the most aggressive. I just made this video if you would like any more info about them :) ua-cam.com/video/Xvl02NAigHk/v-deo.html

why are they differentiated as haps when Mbunas are haplochromines as well? I found that initially quite confusing. Also, your tank is so beautiful.
