100% true for me. After undergrad, I got my first job making $75k by moving from Virginia to New Mexico. Nobody in Virginia would hire me. I stayed there for 4 months and got a random email offering me $185k in Colorado. Have been working that job since. A year later they were able to move me back to Virginia. My recruiter said that they were only looking for people in the Rocky Mountain area, so had I stayed in Virginia, I never would have gotten this job. Moving changed my life forever and I’d highly recommend it as a temporary sacrifice.

Why should anyone be expected to sever their entire social network to move across the country to a place they might not even like for a job that could lay them off on a whim? No thanks.

I did that once. I moved closer to my job that paid me really well. 6 months later - laid off. Now I was stuck in that section of town that I could not afford! LOL! Never again!!!
I did move for a job and spent a few years with the employer before they decided to do layoffs. The company laid people off in 2024 because of bad finances and last in, first out. I learned a lot at the job, but there's very little you can do to protect yourself when you see your manager and vice president in the department also getting laid off. Thankfully I didn't have a lot of expenses. If you do move, don't rent an apartment to start. Don't buy a house. Rent a room, live with roommates if you can, at least to see how the job goes before you plant roots. I am glad I didn't buy a house otherwise I'd be stuck in Arizona without a job because the company had to downsize. I work in the computer field, I won't name the firm... But it was a relatively large and recognizable company.

sir, i say this with much respect, u r out of ur mind. to move u need about $10K, for rent, move, gas etc... if u have been looking for a job for the last 6mths, then ur savings are depleted - even if u do relocate, emplrs can and do pull the offer for one reason or another - how much risk is one willing to take? the pay is pretty much uniformed in the US, so there is NO advantage to move!!!
I feel this a lot. In my last job I felt very "trapped" in a town that had few if any job options. I kind of knew in the back my head that if I were to find anything, it would require quite a long distance move. I got super super lucky and found a job offer in Portland, Oregon. So being a single guy with relatively meager possessions, I threw away about 90% of my possessions. Packed only what would fit in my car (Backpack, Laptop, Cat).. and drove 1,300 miles to a new job in a new city I'd never ever been to. I realize how lucky and privileged I am to be able to do that. I know many that are either too poor to move or have family or kids or other 'strings" that keep them in a certain city. It's rough out there. The job I left, I had a significant amount of Vacation pay to cash out. The new job offer I got was a 54% raise. So for me, it was a super lucky break that worked out positively for me. But I also remind myself every day that it's an outlier lucky situation and by no means the norm.

We are in a time where having to move is more likely. Some parts of the country are less prone to moving. I live in one of those midsized college towns and there are plenty of job opportunities here. I came here to go to college in 1980 and I never really left. I've worked for 6 companies throughout my career, all in the same town, in fact just within a very few miles of each other. I've always had a commute that's less than 15 minutes, and that's a low speed leisurely residential neighborhood 15 minutes. If I cared to take the interstate it would have been half that at most places I worked.
You need money to make money, thus a strong savings. Unemployed People are having a hard time finding work in their own home state. Unless the company will cover all expenses for moving, Or you have a partner that can financially support you (because let’s face it most of us didn’t come from money), I can’t see anyone moving solely for just a job, and a non contracted “at will” one especially.
Entry level is no longer entry level for some fields such as tech where job requirements want 3-5 years of experience companies looking for tech "unicorns" lmao while offering shit pay starting out that gets lowered even more with every passing day due to insane competition even at "entry level".

Entry level is 0 years of experience and willing to train the right/highly motivated person that is proactive, not reactive who is constantly looking to upskill and really sharpen their skills and knowledge.
Truly sad how people keep shuffling about the country trying to outrun the cost of living. Most of the millennials I know have already lived in at least 3 or 4 different cities, always following the work and never setting down roots anywhere. The only real advantage to going from one starter apartment to the next is the ability to get rid of your cheap possessions, pack up a car and go. Because moving furniture across state lines is really expensive, whether you hire a team or do it alone.

If someone would be willing to move for just a job that should be seen as dedication and rewarded. For me i am just trying to find a mentor and build connections because that seems like the only reliable way to get jobs or promotions. I would love to hear any advice on that front too. Ive moved 9 times in the 25 years with the military... most of them sucked... also got to go on work trips to the Fukushima nuclear disaster and 7 months in Afghanistan. Meanwhile those 20 to 35 are whining about moving once or having to come into the office 5 days a week. Let me show you the barren field where I grow the craps I have to give for your problems!
