I will never understand why people literally only want sear lines instead of a crust from a full surface sear. That grayness between the lines means the meat hasn't seared for the full maillard reaction.
Grill Grates are fantastic! I've been using them for 8 years and I'll never go without them. One major advantage I see is you can flip the Grill Grates over and use them as a flat griddle.
Yeah I agree, I have been actually searing my steaks on that flat side lately. I just wanted to try something new and I kinda like it better now 😂. I wonder if anybody else has tried that on here?
As a welder myself, tack welds are faster and a more cost effective way but they also have drawbacks as you’ve seen. Looks to me like they have gone above and beyond to remedy the issue with multiple welds. The issue that has been mentioned in the past for most people is the price. I think your review clearly demonstrated you can achieve the same results with both. Thanks for the review as always.
Grill Grates are just hard to beat! They are one piece and do not come apart. I have 4 sets and can put them on any pit I use. They work great when flipped for the griddle effect. I replaced the grates on my 2 burner Weber with a set of Grill Grates and it works fantastic! Even when I reverse sear a steak from my Egg or Pellet grill I finish them on the flat side of the Grill Grates. I use to have to heat up a cast iron grate or pan then clean up after but not anymore. I also have a travel set to put on any grill I may encounter. Have a set for my PKGO and works great! I use to help control temp when slow cooking.
I've been using the GrillGrates for 4 years. I bought the set for my Smokey Joe to be able to use the full cooking surface without needing a hot/cool soon because it's so small. They've worked amazingly well. I'm thinking of getting a set for my Jumbo Joe to also be able to cook using to full cooking surface without worrying about losing cooking space from banking the coals to one side. I've used them for chicken, chops, and sausage and they always come out good. Never really cared about grill marks before but the GrillGrates does make your food, especially steaks and chops, look amazing.
Love the comment. I’m all about using the entire cooking surface, one of the reasons I legitimately hate the slow n sear and just about anything put out by Adrenaline BBQ ERRRR!! SNS GRILLS. The grill grates are a really good product. Thanks for the support and commenting.
Your size comparisons are pretty much out the window because you can get Grill Grates in any size you want, even fitting circular grills like the Weber Kettle. The convoluted shape of the True Wave grates would apparently make cleaning a nightmare compared to the ease of cleaning Grill Grates. After using Grille Gates in SCA competitions, I would REALLY have to be impressed with a replacement and the True Wave doesn't appear to be it. Just sayin'. :)
I flipped my GrillGrates upside down, to try the griddle effect during my sear, and I was incredibly impressed with the results. Thanks for all the videos, I've enjoyed your comparisons!!
I still think they would benefit from laser welding those slats on solid, it's great that they listened to all your critiques and made changes for the better, definitely shows what kinda company they are. I like the grille grates better because they're made of one solid peice, but I do think the shape of the wave is much nicer.
Good review Chris, that is one thing i like about any company is that they listen to customers and take notes about the products and change it if it is to help them in the long run.
SentOne1000 I agree. I was pretty damn pissed off to say the least, however they fixed it and made it right. Going that extra mile wins my support. I hope that doesn’t change. Thanks for the support and watching Brother.
as a disabled MARINE and a experience underwater welder I can tell you tack welding will fail over time and tack welding should not be trusted as a permanent fix..............always enjoy your channel
WHEAT I suggested a bead weld under it, however they have it weld in so many spots that I believe it will hold up. Anything was better than before. Thanks for the support and watching Brother
Well in all fairness, each of them are made for there own unique style of cooking. Grill grates are really good at doing what they do. I am happy with both. Thanks for the support and watching brother.
Smokin' Joe's Pit BBQ Now, they didn’t do exactly as I suggested, however they at least did something, and I am impressed with that. Thanks for the support and watching Brother.
Thanks for being a consumer advocate; it seems like you even got results - which it's rare when businesses actually listen to their customers anymore. Usually, they file for bankruptcy and change their name - and then go back to doing exactly the same thing over again.
I think it's a tough market for True Wave to get into, Grill Grates has the Competition guys on their side and it comes with the perfect match spatula. Glad they fixed the weld issue...hopefully. Nice reviews Chris. Take care down there and stay cool!
BBQ PIT DOG truwave isn’t going after the steak sear market, they want the lower temp cooks, like chicken and fish. Thanks for the support and watching
The side by side picture shows why grill grates are a must have in competition where appearance is a big portion of the score. I’m sure both steaks were fantastic, but GG rule for grill marks.
I’ve got a set of the Grill Grates and love them. You stated you read the directions why didn’t you season them according to the pamphlet? I used the onion method and they are like silicone. Nothing has stuck to them. They are a great product.
Alex Gilmore I did season them according to what I read. No olive oil, high heat, and they get darker and more stick proof. I missed the onion method. I’ll go back and look. So far I like them. Thanks for watching.
I love my Grill Grates! I use mine in my Weber gas grill. What I really like is they even the heat out and helps with hotspots on the grill. Perfect for when I grill a bunch of burgers.
Great video! Thank you for creating it and showing us the comparison. I personally like the idea of stainless steel over aluminum, but I much prefer the low profile of the grill grate. Sidenote: In my opinion, the music used was overly distracting and unpleasant.
Hey my suave brother you do look dapper today. Well from what I can tell they both will have their own advantages and disadvantages of what you want to cook and how fast you want to cook it just my humble opinion I might wrong as hell. I always in enjoy your reviews, you put the product through rigorous testing and most of all give your honest opinion. Thank you for that my brother. You and the family have a great weekend and stay safe. Ciao!
Cooking with Stephen n Jacklyn That is my sentiment exactly. Both do there own thing. Grill grates for higher temp cooks, TruWave for lower temp cooks. Stephen I can only hope to look as dapper and debonair as you my brotha. I hope all is well along the equator. Thanks for the support and watching. CIAO.
I'm glad I purchased the Grillgrates after seeing this. I love them and have used them on my Yoder YS640S, but now only use them on Napoleon gas grill. If I do reverse sear, I smoke them on the Yoder and sear on the Napoleon. I haven't tried them on my Kamado Joe because I think it's too hot for the aluminum.
Nice looking ribeyes. I really like the GrillGrates been having a lot of fun using them. They’re also good for flipping over and using like a griddle. Cheers Chris!
I was going to mention the same thing..smash burgers come out great because they get just a little kiss of flame. We've also done pizzas on them on my new MB 1050..YUMMY!!
Great reviews Chris! Guess ya could say that true wave has great customer service 👌 both look like a great accessory that will get the job done, thanks for sharing brother, have yourself a great weekend, you all stay safe!👍👊
Behind the Garage BBQ Both are different materials and do things differently. I like both so Either one is a good choice in my eyes. Thanks for the support and watching brother.
The hotter you go with the Grill Grates the better. I shoot for 700°. This gives you that crunchy flavorful cross hatch that makes a next level steak...
Just bought a set of GG to find that they are reversible, did not think of it before buying. Agree, the absolute best way is in a pan or flat top, but I can see the flat side of these things being a very close second with the added benefit of wood heat and smoke.
Wow you told him to correct the grill greats and gave him suggestions on how to improve... thats cool😎... the chicken in the end made me want some grilled chicken sandwiches... hope your having a great weekend... happy labor day weekend 8)
Yes really. I asked my butcher, he measured and cut per my request. I didn’t double check but from what I recall the were 1 1/2 inch thick. Thanks for the support and commenting.
I am interested in buying grillgrate, I am used to cooking steaks on my Weber cast iron grates, its all flat so it takes about 8-9 mins. Can I cook the same way in grillgrate? or do I have to sear first and then flip etc
The Gallery Backyard BBQ I planning to use in a non conventional way this week, but yeah, the Grill Grates are pretty damn neat. Both offer there own unique niche in the market. Thanks for the support and watching JERSEYBRO.
Looks good but i couldnt care about grill marks id prefer a nice even crust all across the top id be spinning that meat non stop to even out the crust flavor city great video
If I remember yoy paid around 80.00 for the nuwave. For the grill grate if I heard correctly lets say 40.00. Cant see why I would pay the difference. Grill grates for me. I paid 80.00 for my grill grates. Came with 3 grates and the meat flipper. Dimensions 5.5 x 16. Still cant see why I would by the nuwave.
James Macgillivray Thats fair. TruWave is 14x9.5 of 304 Stainless Steal, it’s a different cooking experience. The TruWave company is targeting people who want to go low n slow and not necessarily sear at high temps, now 304 SS can get to those high temps with no problem. With the discount code someone can get a TruWave at $70, the grill grates I got for $40, It all depends on preference. Thanks for the support and watching Brother.

Zee bass pretty much don’t have to do anything to the GrillGrates ,in fact they recommend you don’t over do the cleaning. Most users simply flip them over and do a small burn off. @@meatcranium4280 I did learn a lot about the two products, thank you. Keep up the good work. I must say I"m leaning towards the GrillGrates for my Webber Genesis 400 and probably will do the replaceable rather than set in. Thoughts?

I will never understand why people literally only want sear lines instead of a crust from a full surface sear. That grayness between the lines means the meat hasn't seared for the full maillard reaction.
I primarily use the flat side. When I used the raised side it’s generally for fish and chicken. Nice to have that option.

You cannot beat Grill Grate, solid aluminum, no welds to break. Why would you use anything else???
Jason F It is nice to have alternatives, however From what I’ve seen grill grated are grate. Thanks for the support and watching.

Big Papa's BBQ I agree. First review in a long time, maybe ever where I like both products. Thanks for your support and watching.
Neither steak had the maillard reaction that comes with searing. The have the marks, yes. But the flat side at 550 is that way to go.
Just bought a set of GG to find that they are reversible, did not think of it before buying. Agree, the absolute best way is in a pan or flat top, but I can see the flat side of these things being a very close second with the added benefit of wood heat and smoke.

As far as the wave update does that mean that’s just the ones they sent you or does that apply to all current grates they are selling?
All the grates they are selling
Great video good info, but you need to learn to read a measuring tape/ ruler. You said 1-1/2" thick steaks, really??
Yes really. I asked my butcher, he measured and cut per my request. I didn’t double check but from what I recall the were 1 1/2 inch thick. Thanks for the support and commenting.
Awesome comparison, nice comparison!
I am interested in buying grillgrate, I am used to cooking steaks on my Weber cast iron grates, its all flat so it takes about 8-9 mins. Can I cook the same way in grillgrate? or do I have to sear first and then flip etc
I would check the temperature at the top of the ribs. Where the meat will make contact
using grill grate long term, did it flare a lot lest than just using flavor bars
About the same, it all depends if fat drips down the side of the grates then it has a flare up like anything else.
Those sear marks are phenomenal on the grill grate
Josh Benware Thats what they are known for. Thanks for the support and watching Brother
As always a thorough comparison Chris!
Thanks Sweedbro

What is the point of these products? Does it help with heat distribution?
Joe Allen yes, they also keeps flare ups down, see the bonus video at the end. In addition the GG can be used as a griddle when flipped over.
Is the new true wave aluminum or stainless? And is it now cut from a solid?
The tru wave seemed to have more flare ups?
Been wanting to get grill grates for my Go Anywhere grill
Samuel olivero I like them. Go for it. They custom make them too. Thanks for the support and watching brother.
Appreciate the info!
I want something like this in cast iron. I dont want to cook on aluminum.

Aluminum has better heat transfer than steel. Thermodynamics.
